The witness of John the Baptist!!!
There was a man sent from God, whose name  was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world…….. John 1:6-9
In our last study, we saw the Divinity of Jesus Christ and why it is necessary to believe that Jesus is God. We saw the secret of living a victorious Christian life which is by receiving the Life of Jesus which is a light that can never be overpowered by the darkness surrounding it. Today, we shall continue by looking at the witness of John the Baptist.
There was a man sent from God, whose name  was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. : This is referring to John the Baptist the forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ. And He came to bear witness of the Light. We already saw in our last study that the Light refers to the life of God Manifested in the Lord Jesus Christ when He was on Earth. In those few words written about John the Baptist, those of us who preach Christ to others have a tremendous example to follow. What shall we learn for ourselves from this verses?

First of all, we can never effectively preach Christ if we are not sent by God. It was written about John that he was a “Man sent from God”. When God sends you, nobody can oppose your life or ministry. But if you take upon yourself a task and a ministry that God has not called you for or sent you, there will only be confusion. And we have seen plenty of this in Christianity. What we need first of all in other to be Servant of God is to have a face to face relationship with God, Where He has commissioned us and sent us. Brother Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:12, ” I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry” No Human being can put you into the Christian ministry, it is only Jesus Christ Himself. If He does not send you into the Ministry, you are wasting your time trying to be involved in the ministry. Let us therefore wait upon the Lord in the place of worship to hear what He will say to us. I don’t just want to go about doing things the Lord never ask me to do. I want to finish the task God has given Me to do. We must recognize that God has called different person for different task and our aim is to do what God wants us to do. So let is tarry until in the place of worship until we hear the call to service. Jesus says in Matthew 4:10, ” You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” It is worship first before service!!!
Another thing we see about John was that He was an ordinary Man, He never had a title. This is another Good example to follow. Forget all this Human titles. Instead have this as your title, “A Man sent from God”. This is far more valuable than every religious title you can think of. Another thing we noticed about John the Baptist is that although He was a Man sent From God, He performed No Miracle, not even one (John 10:41). Can a Man who is sent from God not perform Miracles. Definitely Yes!!! John is such a Man. There are many who have this wrong notion that anyone sent from God must be able to perform signs and wonders. And when they come in contact with men of God, what they are seeking is Miracles. This is a very wrong thing to do. The ability to work Miracles is a gift of the Holy Spirit. And it is not given to everyone. So if you take ability to do Miracles as a criteria for knowing a Man sent from God, you will go completely astray. Remember what the Bible says that in the last day, Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” The sign that a Man is sent from God is the Life of Jesus that you see Manifested in Him.
It was also said that John came to bear witness of the Light. He did not come to profound theories or to preach sermons or to convince people of his own greatness as a Preacher or prophet. He came to bear witness of that Life of God Manifested in Christ. This is our calling also. We are called to bear witness to the life of Christ not just to tell people that,” A person called Jesus Christ lived on Earth 2000 years ago” but to bear witness to that life that was Manifested in Him. We are to show with our life and character the Nature of Christ. This is only possible if we have partaken of that Life ourselves. If we have not partaken of the Divine nature, then it would be impossible to be a correct witness for the Lord. If we are gripped by the Life of God as it was seen in Jesus, then we can be an effective witness for Him.
What is the ultimate purpose of witnessing to others about this Life of Jesus? It is not to draw people to ourselves. It was said about John that, “He bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe”. John’s aim was to lead people to faith in Christ. It was to turn people away from Himself to Christ. He was not the Light but He came to bear witness of the Light. When we claim to stand before people and present ourselves as the Light, then we have gone completely astray. It is the Spirit of the anti Christ to draw people to ourselves and make them our followers. Our calling is to draw people to Christ. Jesus said, ” And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself(John 12:32)”. When we lift up Christ, people will be drawn to Him. But Many Preachers lift up themselves by mentioning what they did here and there and all the Miracles they have done and so people are drawn to the Preacher instead of Christ. John the Baptist was not like that. He said, “Jesus must increase but I must decrease(John 3:30)”.
That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world: Jesus Christ came into the world to give light to every Man. In fact, the whole world has benefited from the coming of Christ. Although very very few have received forgiveness of Sin and salvation. But that Light has come into the Lord. Whether a person respond to that Light and allows it to come into every part of his being is another part of the story. Permit me to ask you, have you received that Light into Your life? Have you opened your whole being for the Light to drive out all darkness? What are you waiting for? Why not be a witness like John the Baptist for your generation? Today if you hear the Lord say to you, ” Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me” I beg You Dear Brothers and sisters, open the door that the Light May come in!!!

Dear Friend, In these few verses, there is a lot we Can learn from John the Baptist about true and effective ministry in the Church. God is looking for Ministers and witnesses like John the Baptist. May the Lord find us worthy to be called into His ministry in Jesus name(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
