The Divinity of Jesus Christ!!!
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it………. John 1:1-5
John the beloved who was the Pen man of this Gospel under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit captured a lot of things that the other Gospel did not write. He was led not be begin the Gospel the ways others began. He never spoke about the Birth of Jesus. He went straight to address some vital points about the Life of Jesus. John speaks more of the Life of Jesus and the Truths. He was the only Gospel writer that noted that Jesus is God so many times. And as we go through this Gospel verse by Verse. You will see the emphasizes Brother John was putting on Life and freedom from Sin. May the Lord give us insight as we go through this book together.
In the beginning was the Word : In these verses, we are to consider, we have a number of Statements concerning the Lord Jesus Christ which are fundamental to the Christian faith. First of all, Jesus existed right from the Beginning. The Word is an a title used for the Lord Jesus. Just as our word is an expression of our invisible thoughts, in the same way, Jesus Christ is the Visible expression of the invisible God. That’s why He is Called the Word. And He existed in the beginning before the Creation of Heaven and Earth. Genesis 1:1 says, ” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” but John 1:1 goes far beyond Genesis 1:1 to tell us Christ existed before creation. So the first thing we must believe about Jesus Christ is that He was in the Beginning.
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.: Another thing we see was that He was with God. In other Word, there was another person who is Called God whom Christ was with. And we know that it was the, “Father”. But John went further to state that, the Word is God. This last statement made it clear without no doubt that Jesus Christ is God. And I am sure there is something in your mind that quickly raise a question, “How Many Gods? How can the Word be with God and at the same time the Word is God?” Yet the Bible says, “There is one God(1 Corinthians 8:6). So how are we going to explain this? This is a great mystery that is too great for our Human mind to comprehend. No matter how much we try, we will always come short of the best explanation for this. This is the mystery of the Trinity!!! There is only one God no one else.
God is three divine persons in one. The Trinity is God the father, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. They are not separate, but they are all in one. We realize that God is more than one person. We know from other passages of Scriptures that God exists in three Persons which are, “Father, Son and the Holy Spirit”. All three equally God, All three Eternally existence, and yet there is only one God. Not three God.(1*1*1=1). Let me show you few verses that shows clearly that Jesus is God. Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and My God( John 20:28)”.And Jesus did not say,” No No!!! Don’t call me God!!!. Jesus Himself said, ” You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.(Matthew 4:10)” And Yet many times in the Gospels we read that People worshipped Him(Matt 8:2, 9:18,14:33,15:25, 28:9). And He did not say, “No! No!!!, don’t worship Me, worship God alone!!!” He received the Worship because He is God!!! Also Acts 20:28 says, “God purchased us with His own blood” So if you say It was Jesus that purchased You, then the Bible says it was God’s blood!!!. We can go and and on in the Scriptures pointing out verses that proves that Jesus is God. But even if you still want to understand why and how it is possible for Three persons to be equal to one, just remember that You are created in God’s image and if God is Three in one, then you also must have such nature. And God’s word made it clear that We have Body, Soul and Spirit(1 Thessalonians 5:23).
Now someone may ask, “Since it is so difficult to comprehend how Jesus is God, why not forget the Concept of Trinity?”. If we don’t accept the teaching that Jesus is God, then it means that it was not God that died for our Sin. Note this carefully, No Human can die for the Sins of the world whole. If Jesus was a created being as some group teaches, then our Sins are not forgiven. The punishment for Sin is not physical death. If physical death was the punishment for Sin, then it means the day I die physically, I have paid for my Sins. But the punishment for Sin is Eternal death which is separation from God forever. And we know that God is a Righteous Judge. God cannot Just overlook our Sins because He loves us. Imagine Your Father is a judge and you committed an offense, will He just overlook it because you are His Son? Definitely not!!! A righteous judge will charge you with the right Judgement and after the Judgement, He will approach You as a Father and give you the Money to pay your fine so that you will not go to jail. This is Exactly what God did. We all deserve Hell because we have all Sinned. And there is no we can be saved. So God Himself had to come in a Visible form and suffer Hell for all human. Only Can do that!!! Because God is an infinite being, He can do that in three hours on the Cross!!! Because He was God, the eternity that All human were to spend in Hell, He spent three hours there which equal eternity because of His eternal nature. This was the time on the cross where there was darkness and Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?”. So Jesus had to be God. If you don’t believe that Jesus is God, then Your Sins are not forgiven for No ordinary Man can die for the Sins of all Human. It is impossible!!! This is why we must always take that position that, “Jesus is God”.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made: This is the beginning of Creation. The Heaven and Earth were Created through Him(Jesus). There is nothing created in the entire universe which is not created by Christ. As if that was not enough. John gave a further proof that Jesus is God. Genesis 1 teaches that the world was
created by the spoken word of God (note the repeating phrase in Genesis 1, “Then God said…”). So when God the Father determined to created the universe and everything in it, He “spoke” it into existence. But as John said in verse 3, Jesus was the One who made all
things, therefore we can say that Jesus was God’s Spoken Word. We can begin to understand this partnership (at least
to some degree) by drawing an analogy to how our own thoughts and words reach into the physical word. When we desire to command something to happen in the world around us, we must first conceive the idea in our minds. No one can see our thoughts. They are
invisible, yet they certainly exist. Without our thoughts, we could purpose to do nothing at all. If our thoughts are to become visible in some way, they must move from the invisible realm of our mind and into the physical world. The progression from invisible to visible requires we transfer our invisible thoughts into a spoken command. The brain communicates our thoughts to our mouth where it becomes: spoken words. Once the spoken word leaves our mouth, it enters the physical world and yields its intended effect. This simple analogy helps explain how God the Father worked with God the Son (the Word) to establish Creation.
This is John’s meaning when he says that Jesus is the Word. He meant that Jesus is the physical manifestation of God the Father, just as a spoken word is the physical manifestation of our inner thoughts. Until Jesus took action and created the universe, there was no physical reality to God’s presence. Colossians 1:15-17 says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” The Father can do nothing without the Word and the Word can do nothing without the Holy Spirit” They are All One!!! No one is superior to the other.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.: Only God has life in Himself. The rest of us has life derived from God. But in Christ was Life. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.(John 14:6)”. And this Life is the Light of Men. When we speak about the Life of God, we are not just speaking about existence but of His Nature. The life of Jesus does not refer to just the fact that He existed in eternity, but the Nature of God Manifested in that life. There is a light that comes forth from the Life, Nature and Character of Jesus and that is the light that God intended Man to walk in. So the Light which is the Life, Nature and Character that Jesus displayed on Earth was not a doctrine, it was not a certain teaching, it was not a form or pattern of service but a Life. But it is sad that the vast Christianity has drifted away from that life and are now occupied with church pattern or particular doctrine. And as long as people are occupied with doctrine and patterns primarily, we can say they have missed the main thing. It is not that Doctrines and patterns that God has laid down are not important. But they are secondary to Life. The Life of Christ is what makes a Man a Christian. It is not a doctrine or pattern!!! It is the Life of Jesus that must be seen in a Christian as He grows up in a church. That Life of Jesus is the Light of Men!!! When you substitute Doctrines for Life, the effect is that we have Christians who have a form of Godliness but deny the power of it. So it is very important that in our Home and Church life, we emphasize this life Nature and character of Jesus so that people might be gripped by it.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it: What is Light meant for if it is not to shine in darkness? A candle never complains that the darkness around it is so thick that it cannot burn. No!!! The candle burns irrespective of the surroundings. Whether it is full of sunlight or thick darkness it will still burn. It makes no difference to the candle. When a Christian complains that His surroundings is very evil and therefore He Cannot be a pure testimony for Christ, then He has not understood what a light is all about. If we have received the life of Jesus, which is the Light of the world and of Men, our surroundings makes no difference. No matter how dark, evil and dirty they may be, the light will still shine. That is Exactly how it was with Jesus. He came to a wicked and evil world of darkness and his light shone in that darkness and darkness could not overpower it. This is the Characteristics of the life and nature of God. It cannot be overcome or overpowered by anything. Wherever the Life of God is Manifested, it would be impossible for Sin to overcome it. Which is stronger, “Sin or the Life of God?”. It is very clear!!! The life of God is stronger. Again, which is stronger, “My own determination or Sin?”. Sin is definitely stronger than my own determination. However much I may grip my teeth and determine to live a Holy life, I cannot because Sin is stronger. Darkness is stronger than all the power I have within myself. All the life I have received from Adam is not strong enough to overcome the Prince of Darkness and his schemes.
So we see here the whole secret of living a victorious Christian life. The secret does not lie in a doctrine or our determination or new year resolution, or changing our mind. Although, All these are good, it is good to be determined, make resolution and change our mind but the overcoming power lies only in the Life of God. And if we do not receive the Life of God, it is impossible to overcome Sin. This is why we must open ourselves to the Holy Spirit who brings to us the Life of Jesus. When our beloved Brother Paul was seeking for Victory over Sin, He said in Romans 7:24 ” O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! For the LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.(Romans 8:2)”. The reason why most of us have not overcome Sin is because we have not yielded more to the Life of God. We have not yielded more to the Holy Spirit. We thought victory is in a doctrine but what we need is to open our whole being and allow the Holy Spirit to come and take possession of every part of Us. Then it would become true in our lives also that the light we have cannot be overpowered by the darkness around us.
Dear Friend, I repeat, even if you cannot comprehend the Trinity, Believe it. For our little mind cannot comprehend the infinite nature of the Almighty, only One God. This is very important for Your foundation. I repeat and I am not ashamed to say it, “Jesus is God!!!”. Open your whole Heart that He might fill your with this Life and nature of God that He has come to manifest on Earth for this is the Only Light in this dark Evil world. May the Lord give us Wisdom and Grace to believe and apply this Truth to our lives. (Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
