Bible Study on the Road to Emmaus!!!
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?” Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?” And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.” Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself……. Luke 24:13-25
In our last study, we saw the significance of Christ Resurrection on the third day and the reaction of the Women who came to anoint His body when they could not find Him. We also saw how the Lord charged the women to go forth and share the news of His resurrection with the other Disciples. Today we shall consider Jesus appearance to two of His disciples as the Journeyed to Emmaus.
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. : Here we see two among the Disciples of Christ heading towards a Village called Emmaus on the same day that Jesus rose from the dead. And the most significant thing about them is that they were talking about the things that happened. They were discussing the Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a very profitable thing for us to always talk about the Lord Jesus Christ as we journey with our friends on the road. In fact, I have found it very interesting when the topic of discussion is Jesus as I journey with my friends. These Disciples were not gossiping or discussing football, they were not talking about the latest movie or music in town. Instead, they made Jesus the Topic of their discussion. Blessed are those who have chosen this habit as they journey on the road. In the old testament, God’s instruction to the Children of Israel was, ” Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, WHEN YOU WALK BY THE WAY, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens above the Earth.(Deuteronomy 11:18-21)”. Let us therefore stir up and challenge ourselves with the word of God as we journey with our friends on the road.
So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.: When we make Christ the Topic of our discussion, we can be sure that the Lord Himself will draw nearer to us. For He has promised that, “Wherever two or three are gathered together in His name, He is in their midst(Matt 18:20). When they that fear the Lord speak one to another the Lord hearkens and hears, and is with them. They who seek Christ shall find him: he will manifest himself to those that enquire after him, and give knowledge to those who make use of the knowledge which they have. It was said that they did not know that it was the Lord. Many at times the Lord is with us and we know it not. Many at times his Spiritual presence is with us but we are too weak and insensitive to perceive it.
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”: This is the question the Lord ask each time He draws closer to us. He ask, “What kind of Conversation is this?” What will your response be if the Lord should ask you this? “What kind of Conservation is this that are having with that girl?, what kind of Conservation is this that you are having on Facebook and whatsapp chat?, What kind of Conservation is this that you are having as you journey with your friends?” Is it a conversation that glorify the Lord or arouse Sexual feelings? Is it a conversation that focuses on Jesus or a Conversation that devise Sin? Let us therefore be mindful of our Conservation for the Lord is near listening and am sure you don’t want to say or chat things that are displeasing to Him.
Notice also that they were sad. Christ’s disciples have reason to be sad when the presence of the Lord withdraws from them. It is in God’s presence that we find fullness of God. A life without Christ is a life full of Sadness. Although Christ has risen from the dead, yet either they did not know it or did not believe it, and so they were still in sorrow. Many at times, Christ’s disciples are often sad and sorrowful even when they have reason to rejoice, because of the weakness of their faith and because they cannot take the comfort that is offered to them in the Scriptures. We are told to rejoice always(1 Thessalonians 5:16),we are told to give thanks for everything.(1 Thessalonians 5:18). There should never be anything that should take away our Joy. For we know that All things work together for good for those who love God(Romans 8:28).
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?” And He said to them, “What things?”: I perceived one of the Disciples was like, ” “What! are such a stranger in Jerusalem as not to know what has been done to our Master there?” He was so full and passionate about Christ and of His death and sufferings, and wonder that every body else is not so too. Indeed all those who are ignorant of Christ death and resurrection are Strangers in the Church!!! And Christ as a stranger ask them, “What things?” Those whom Christ will teach he will first examine how far they have learned. Those who are willing to know more of Jesus need to be asked what they know first.
In response to this, they gave a summary account of Jesus Ministry. They said, ” The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”: Christ rebuke them for their slowness to believe in what was written in the Scriptures. Does the Lord has to call anyone of us fools because we are slow to believe in what was written in the Word of God? Does the Lord has to say to us, “O Foolish ones, why can’t you believe that ALL things work together for good for those who Love God? O foolish ones, Why do you worry about what to eat and drink when Your father is the one that feeds the bird of the air? ” Notice that Christ did not rebuke them because they did not believe the testimonies of the women who saw the Angels but instead He called them fools for not believing what was written in the Scriptures. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He will never rebuke you if you don’t believe the testimonies of people who claim to have seen the supernatural. But He will definitely call you a fool if you don’t believe what is written in the Scriptures. Let us therefore be quick to believe the Scriptures. If it is written, then it is the Truth even if it contradicts our own understanding.
He also said, ” Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” If only they had believed the Scriptures, they would have discovered that the sufferings of Christ is a proof that He is the Messiah and that after the suffering comes the Glory because all the Prophets spoke about it. 1 Peter 1:10-11 says, ” Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. We have also been called to walk as Jesus walked. Before we can enter this Glory, we are to Suffer!!! Romans 8:17 says, “if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” This is the way we have been called to walk. We are to look at Jesus who endured the Cross and despise the shame because of the Glory that was set before Him. There is no glory without suffering. It is good to have this quote always before us, “No Suffering, No Glory”. Do you want the Glory? Then walk in the pathway of suffering!!! The Narrow Way is the Difficult Way.
And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself: What a long Bible study!!! Genesis to Malachi Bible study. It must have been very interesting. Jesus was showing them how the old testament Scriptures referred to everything concerning Him. And there is one very interesting thing we see that they said after the Bible study. They said, ” Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?(Luke 24:32)”. During this entire time of Bible study, the heart of the Disciples were burning within them. It was not a boring Bible study. Bible study must never be boring. A Bible study that is boring is not inspired by the Holy Spirit. The mark of prophetic Bible study is that it makes the heart of the Listeners burn within. Beginning from Genesis to Malachi, Jesus quoted passage after passage and explained it and their testimony after this Bible study is, “Our Hearts were burning”. A lot of ministry of the Word today that is boring and cause people to sleep is not anointed by the Holy Spirit. It is dead knowledge that comes from a man’s brain. When Jesus speaks even today, our hearts will burn within us. If you are a person who is speaking God’s word, your longing should be that when you preach God’s word, the heart of those who listen should burn within them. If their hearts is not burning, then something is wrong with your ministry of the Word. It is not that we should have an occasional time where people’s heart burn within them, it must be always!!! For all of Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit. So if we speak from any passage of the Scripture from Genesis to Revelation and people hear, their hearts should burn. There is no passage of Scripture that is boring. Every passage can be applied in a way to Humans heart that will make it burn if we are anointed by the Holy Spirit. God’s word is like Meat, When you buy meat in the market, it is dry and smelly and nobody is attracted towards it. But put that same meat into fire and roast it and you will find suddenly that a smell comes forth from it that draws people and tempt them to want to have a bite. What is it that makes the difference? It is the same piece of meat but that meat is now on FIRE!!! It is the same with God’s truth in His words. We should always bring up God’s word to people in the Fire of the Holy Spirit and the people will be drawn. This is what we must seek. The baptism in the Holy spirit and fire. The gift of prophecy so that God’s word will come forth from us as meat on fire that draws people and makes their hearts burn, and reveals the secret of their hearts and makes them fall upon their face and say, “God is here(1 Corinthians 14:25)”. This is the infallible proof that Jesus is in the ministry of the Word. If you sit in a meeting and your Heart is not burning, it is either the Man that is speaking is not anointed by God or You don’t have a ear to hear. If you have a ear that is willing to be instructed and you are listening to a man who is anointed by God, in every single meeting, your heart will burn.
Dear Friend, Fill up your Heart with God’s word that even while you work along the Road, what comes out from your mouth is God’s word. Take heed for the Lord is near listening to every conversation whether by chat or mouth. Remember that without Suffering, there is no glory. And seek for the baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire for the Lord is seeking for those who tongue will be on fire for Him in these last days. God is seeking for Brothers and sisters who will set people’s heart on fire for Jesus as we approach the end of this age. May the Lord find us worthy to be his Spokesmen for our generation. (Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
