The Death of Jesus!!!
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!”Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons….. Matthew 27:45-56 (Luke 23:44-48)
In our previous studies, We were considering how Jesus conducted Himself while He was being insulted on the Cross and how all that they were doing to Him were simply to fulfill what was written about Him already. We also see how one of the thieves was convicted and became honest about his Sins. Today, we shall see the events that happened when Jesus finally died and the few lessons we can learn and apply to our lives.
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”: The 6th hour was 12 noon and the 9th Hour was 3pm. Jesus was Crucified at 9am in the Morning. So He was on the Cross for 6 hours. For the first three hours, there was no darkness but in the last three hours, darkness fell upon the Earth. This period of Darkness is the period when Christ suffered the pangs of Hell. In three hours, the concentrated punishment of an eternal hell that all humans will suffer in eternity was experienced by Jesus because He was an infinite being. Hell is a Place forsaken by God. There is nothing as painful as being forsaken by God. We can never comprehend the agony and pain of being forsaken by God. In Hell, there is no elements of God’s mercy at all. Hell is such a terrible place that I don’t even wish my enemies should go there. This was the agony Jesus went through when He bore our Sins. He was forsaken by His Father so that we might not be forsaken. All our sufferings and agony, He bore it upon Himself. The Hell we should have all gone forever was experienced by Jesus in three Hours. This could only be possible because Jesus is God!!! No ordinary Human being can take the suffering of All Humanity in three Hours. It had to be God!!! It was a terrible moment for Jesus and we will never Understand the depth of the suffering till we see Jesus face to face. This is the period He drank that Cup he was reluctant to drink at the prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. This was the moment where He became Sin for our sake. All the Sins of Humanity was upon Him. All the Sins that Humans will ever commit was laid on Him. Even God turned His Face away and darkness covered the Whole Land. Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, Why have You Forsaken Me?” For the first time in His Life, He called God, “God”. In His entire Life, He always call God, “Father”. This is the Only time that He called Him God. Why was that? It was because now, He was standing before God as a Convicted Criminal for the Sins of others. He was standing before the Judge of the whole world for the Sins of the whole universe. He was standing as a Criminal so He said, “God”. His relationship with the Father was broken, the Fellowship and communion He had enjoined with His Father from eternity was broken. Even in His cry to the Lord, He was not rebellious, He did not say, “O God, O God” instead He said, “My God, My God”. I perceive He was saying, ” Even though You Forsake Me for the Sins of the whole world, You are still my God!!!” In the midst of such great a suffering, Jesus was still submissive to God. This should be our attitude when we go through things that we cannot understand. We must say, “You are still My God”. We must remain submissive to Him. We must say as Job says, “Thou He slay Me, Yet I will trust in Him”
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!”Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” : As if the Pain was not enough, those who stood at the Cross ridiculed Him again. Because they heard Him say, ” “Eli, Eli”, they interpreted it that He was calling Elijah. They made fun at His words. They said He was calling unto Elijah for rescue. I perceive they were like, “Since God will not save you from the Cross, Call on Elijah”. Indeed they made Him a subject of ridicule. Now when they gave Him a wine, He drank it for there was nothing more to be accomplished. This was also done to fulfill the Scriptures(John 19:28-29).
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.: What did Jesus say when He cried out this time? We know He first said, “It is finished(John 19:30). The work of salvation was over. The work of redemption was over. All the Judgement of Hell has been paid for. There is no reason anyone should go to Hell anymore. All our sorrows and pains are finished. All our falling again and again is finished. All the Sins of humanity has been paid for. All the Sins you have sinned and even the one you are yet to commit has been paid for. It is such a wonderful Gospel. But why is it that not everyone is enjoying the benefits of what Jesus did on the Cross? It is because not all believed it. It is only those who believe and respond to what Christ is offering them that will enjoy the benefits. Picture this, “Imagine You are owing someone a huge amount of Money and because you could not pay, you were about to be thrown into the prison. Then a rich and kind man came around and heard about Your case. So He wrote a Cheque and pointed it to You to collect.” You can do two things, It is either you Humble yourself and collect the cheque Pointed to You or You reject it out of pride!!! This is exactly what is happening to many today. The price for the Sins of the world has been paid, but only those who Humble themselves and collects the cheque of salvation pointed to them will enjoy the benefits. I hope you have collected Yours? If not, You can do it right now, say “Lord Jesus, I accept that I am a Sinner. I deserve nothing but Hell. Have mercy upon Me. I believe You Died for My Sins. I accept You as My Lord and Saviour. Come into My Life, Give Me the Holy Spirit to transform Me. Thank You Jesus for accepting Me, for You have said, “He who comes to Me,I will never cast away!!! Satan, I no longer belong to You!!! I belong to Jesus!!!”
After Jesus had said it is finished, the last thing He said on the Cross was, ” Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit(Luke 23:46). How was He able to call God, “Father”? His relationship with the Father has been restored at the end of the three Hours of Hell on the Cross. Notice, He did not commit His spirit to Hell as some people have taught. All the sufferings of Hell was on the Cross. He committed His Spirit to the Hands of His Father. It is an insult to say after Jesus die and said, “it is finished”. He went to Hell again to fight the Devil for keys for three days . Moreover, in case You don’t know, the Devil is not Yet in Hell. Jesus Himself told the thief, “TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise(Luke 23:43). So Jesus went to the Paradise Section of Hades not the Place of Torment that the Rich man went to in the parable that Jesus spoke.
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; This is a very big subject on its own. But we will touch it in brief Here. This veil symbolizes Jesus Flesh in which He came. Jesus came in the same Flesh like us. And this thing called Flesh is what hinders us from having Fellowship with God. The tearing of this Veil means that that a new and Living Way has been opened. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His Flesh(Hebrews 10:19-20). The tabernacle had three parts namely, the outer court, the Holy place and the most Holy place. So there was this Veil covering the Most Holy place. What was inside the most Holy place was the Ark of the God. It was where God dwells. So the Veil was indicating that No one can come into the presence of God. And the Veil means our Flesh. It is our Flesh that prevents us from Fellowship with God. So when Jesus came in our Flesh and in faithfulness, He overcame every temptation in the Flesh. He never sinned in thoughts, words and deed. And Since He overcame all? The veil was opened. Romans 8:3-5 says, ” For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Now we can come and have Fellowship with the Father. Now we can also walk in this new and Living Way that was inaugurate for us. We can come boldly into the presence of God. Don’t come short of this experience. The tabernacle also represents the Dwelling place of God. God wants to dwell in our body. Just like the Tabernacle had three parts, our body also has three parts, namely, “Body, Soul and Spirit”. God dwells in the Spirit. But there is a thing in the soul of Man called “Our Will”. This our will is what prevented Man from Fellowship with God. And yet the Father is looking for those who will worship Him in Spirit. The only way we can do that is by denying Our Will. It is Like tearing the Veil preventing us from God. This is the new and Living Way. A life where we can deny our will and do the will of God.
and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.: Notice, the Saints only came out from the tomb after Jesus resurrection. Jesus had to be the fruit born from among the Dead. The tombs were opened at the time of the Earthquake but the bodies later. This old testament Saints appeared to many people in Jerusalem. Amazing!!!
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”: They have never seen anything like this happen in any crucifixion. The Roman centurion had never seen anyone who was so calm at Crucifixion. He had seen many people during their death, cursing and swearing but Jesus went to His Death opening His Palms for the nails and praying that the Father would forgive those who were crucifying Him. He was so convicted by Jesus attitude that He said, ” “Truly this was the Son of God!”. It is when people see us faithfully enduring the Cross and going down and dying to our reputation and ego that they see the Manifestation of the Sons of God in Us.
Dear Friend, is there a Love as Greater than these? That My God should die for Me. We can never Understand how much it cost God to save the world until we see Jesus face to face. May the Lord open our eyes that we might always behold Jesus dying for our Sins(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
