The Prediction of Peter’s Denial.!!!
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”  But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”  Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”…….. Luke 22:31-34
In our previous Study, we considered the story of the widow’s mite who put in all that she had into the offering box and how she was commended by Jesus. Today, we shall be considering the warning Jesus gave Peter about his denial of Him and how Peter responded to it.
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.: It is interesting to see that Satan cannot touch Simon without permission. And this applies to us too. If we are Disciples of Jesus, Satan cannot touch us too without permission. He has to ask God for permission. And it is interesting to see that God gave Satan permission to do it just as He gave Satan permission to test Job. Satan could not touch Job without God’s permission. In fact Satan himself said, ” Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?(Job 1:10). If Satan can recognize this, then we also need to recognize it. We must recognize that God has placed an hedge around us. But sometimes, God Allows this hedges to be taken away so that Satan come through and test us up to a certain point. But we have this wonderful Promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13 which says, ” God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”. So we see that before Satan can tempt us, He has to go to God for permission and God has to see and check if that temptation is beyond us or not. Wonderful truth!!!! Listen again, God will never never allow any temptation that is beyond our ability to Come to us. I can imagine Satan going to God with a List of all the things He wants to test me with and Says to God, “Sir, please this is the List of things I want to tempt Victor with, Kindly go through the list to see”. And the Lord collects the List and goes through it and says, “Hmmmmm. You cannot tempt Him with temptation Number 4 and 6 because He has not attain to that level. But you can go ahead with the other Temptations for these are not beyond his abilities” Can you see how much we disappoint God’s boasting over us when we Sin? Can you see how much God is disappointed each time we fail in time of Temptations? “I perceive that each time we Sin, the Lord is saying,” But why? You have grown beyond that now? That temptation was not beyond your abilities in me ”
But now, we may ask” Why did God gave Satan permission when He knew that Peter was going to fail? ” This was also necessary for Peter. Failure is also necessary in order to break us. Simon Peter was broken at the end of this failure so thoroughly that He wept and mourn. It was this brokenness that turned Him into a gentle man of God. So we see something wonderful here that God uses Satan sometimes to trial us and tempt us and even allows us to fail. It is not God’s will that we should fail, but when we do fail like Peter, God can turn that failure to good by allowing that failure to break us and Humble us. So God turns the evil that Satan does against us to Good. This is the God we worship!!!
Notice, what is the Method Satan use to tempt Peter? It is called the “Sifting Method”. Sifting is a process of removing the desired particles from the whole lump  by using an instrument called the Sieve. For example, if you what to sift wheat flour, All you need to do us put the whole flour into the Sieve and keep shaking the Sieve. The smaller but nutritious particles will fall through the Sieve holes leaving the chaff above it. This is the method Satan uses to leak and evaporate the spirituality and power out of a Man’s life. It is a quite method in which Satan use to destroy a Man’s life. It is the method that Satan uses to leak spiritual content out of a Man and leave Him impotent and weak. Sieve contains many little holes and these little holes are enough to separate the Wheat from the chaff. There are many little little things we may not take seriously and say it does not matter but these are the little foxes that destroys the Vine. For example, I have met some Christians who says, “Listening to worldly songs means nothing but little did they understand that this is one of the methods the Devil uses to empty their Spiritual content. The Devil is always going around with His Sieve and looking for opportunities to make us weak and impotent in our spiritual lives. Let us therefore be sober and vigilant; because  your adversary the Devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour(1 Peter 5:8).
But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; But the Lord Jesus seeks to Help us. Look at what Jesus says to Peter. He said, ” I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail”. I perceive the Lord was saying, “Peter, although you are going to be sifted, but instead of Losing the Wheat, it is the chaff that will be evaporated from your life!!! This is the God we serve. Romans 8:28 says,” And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Jesus is praying for us in time of Temptations that our faith should not fail when we fall. It is interesting to see that Jesus never prays that we should not lose our money but He prays that our faith should not fail. Jesus prays for us as He prayed for Peter. We are told in Hebrew 7:25 that, ” Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” This is how we are preserved. Whatever we may lose such as our health, wealth, but He prays that we should not lose our faith in Him. We must not lose our trust in Him. We must not lose our Hope in Him. We must not Doubt the Love He has for us. There are many who have lost their faith in Christ because they have failed so much. There are many who thinks Jesus does not love them again because they have fallen into a new great Sin. Don’t lose your Faith!!! Jesus still Loves You. Romans 5:6-8 says, ” For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.: Look at the message of Hope the Lord gave Peter!!! He told Peter that, “I Have prayed for you that you will return to Me”. We must believe with all our heart that the Lord is Longing and praying for our return no matter how much we have fallen. And His purpose for us returning after we have failed is to strengthen others that have failed. It is so that we can strengthen other brothers and sisters in the Church who have failed also. A man who have failed before never looks down on others no matter how fallen they are.
But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”: Look at the response of Peter!!! We don’t realize how weak and self confident we are until we have failed. It is so easy to make boast like Peter. It is so easy to say we are ready to go to prison and to death with Jesus without recognizing that our flesh is weak. Peter was quick to forget that He was weak. This was the same Peter an expert Fisherman that was afraid to be drown in the Sea and Cried out, “Lord Save me!!!”. But now He is boasting of His abilities!!! One mark of a broken man is the lack of confidence in Himself. We must never forget that, “The Spirit is willing but the Flesh is weak!!!”
Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.” In our next study, we shall look at how the Devil sifted Peter of His self confidence. Don’t miss it!!!
Dear Friend, Be Vigilant!!! For the Devil is going around with His Sieve Looking for souls to Empty!!! Trust in the Lord for Grace and strength and rely not on your own abilities. But remember that even if you fail, don’t lose your faith in Christ. Return to Him for He is praying for you. Return and strengthen others that have fallen also. May the Lord give us Grace to recognize that, “Without Christ, I can do nothing”. (Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
