The widow’s Two Mites!!!
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”……. Luke 21:1-4.
In our previous study, we looked into the Parable of the Minas and we noted that it is quite different from the parable of the Talent. We saw that the Parable of the Minas speaks about an area in our lives where we are given something equal unlike the parable of the talents where we are given different amount of Talents. Today, we shall be looking at Jesus teaching on the Widows mite when giving offering.
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. : Jesus takes notice of what we contribute and put into the offering box. He knows whether we give liberally or sparingly. He knows whether we give cheerfully or reluctantly., He looks at the heart and observes the principles on which we give. He looks to know whether we do it as unto the Lord, or only to be seen of men. There are many who give to the Lord only because they are expecting to get something back from God as a return. There are many who are told to give to the Lord with a principle of Business. They seems to say to the Lord, “If I give you #1000, I know you will give me back #100,000. The Lord’s sees it all!!! And it is good to examine yourself also? Why do you put money into the offering box? Why? Is it because you are expecting for something back in return? Is it because you want to impress the people? Is it becomes you are compelled to do so? Is it because you are a worker in the Church and it is a must that all works must contribute in that project? The Lord’s sees it All. God’s word to us in 2 Corinthians 9:7 is, ” let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
It’s a good thing to see the rich giving to the Lord and the Lord also sees that too. The Lord does not primarily looks at how much is put into the offering box, but He looks HOW it is put, it does not look at the quantity, but the quality of our giving. I mean the motive behind our giving.

Also it a good thing if those who are poor materially can give to the Lord. Those that have but a little, ought to give out of their little. So we see that Jesus sees both the rich and also the poor when they put money in the offering box. Most church sees only the rich, but Jesus sees both the rich and the poor.
So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”: Now Jesus gave a particular comment concerning this poor Widow’s offering. We will never have known that it is this woman that the Lord would commend despite the numbers of rich men that put money into the offering box. This woman put in just two mites and the Lord said, “She has put in more than all”. What was it that made this woman two mite above all? What was Jesus seeing in this poor Widow’s offering that matters so much? If only we can understand this, we will see that God looks at the offering box in an entirely different way from the church Treasurer’s view. Pastors and Preachers can appreciate you and give you position in the Church because of the amount you contribute as tithes and offering. But God may have a different opinion about you. Let us therefore never glory in others recommendation about us. Instead let us seek for God’s recommendation upon our lives.
Consider what Jesus says, ” for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God,.” I sense Jesus was saying, “You see all these rich had plenty money. So they gave out of the plenty they have. What they put in the offering box cost them nothing. It was easy for them to give, they can still continue their comfortable lifestyle after they gave. But this Poor widow put in ALL THAT SHE HAD”. She put into the Offering box her whole life. In the old testament, God made a Law to the Children of Israel to give 10%of their income to God as tithes. But in the New testament, we are told to give ALL. In fact, one of the Conditions to become a Disciple of the Lord is stated as,” whoever of you does not forsake ALL THAT HE HAS(100%) cannot be My disciple (Luke14:33). So we see that this poor widow was fulfilling the Conditions of Discipleship!!! So if you don’t Forsake all that you have to the Lord, you cannot be a Disciple of the Lord. If all you give to the Lord is 10%, then you are not a Disciple. We must give ALL to the Lord. We must recognize that EVERYTHING, belongs to the Lord and not just 10%. Also we read in Romans 12:1, ” I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your BODIES a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. So since this woman was putting her livelihood, we can say she was offering herself as a Living sacrifice!!! What a wonderful woman. This is what God requires. If He can get our eyes, mouth, passion, ears, ambitions etc. He’s got everything else!! Have you given all to the Lord? Have you offered your eyes, mouth, ears, passion to the Lord? Majority find it easy to give money to the Lord but find it hard to give their bodies. It is our bodies the Lord need!!! Honestly, it is more easy to give 10% to God in a month than to offer our eyes to the Lord never to Lust with it in a month or our mouth never to lie with it in a month. A carnal Man will always love the easy path. Which do you want to offer? Your money or your body? God does not need your money!!! The silver and the gold belongs to Him. He can easily get money even from a fish mouth to do His work. What God lacks is BODIES!!! God is seeking for those who will offer their bodies so that He can accomplish His purposes through their lives. God needs Men and women not Money!!! May the Lord find your bodies available for Him. If He can get your body, money is a small thing!!!
Notice also, She gave up what will cost her something. Maybe she had to deny herself some food afterwards. Maybe she had to deny herself of some new clothes after that day. What is important is that she gave to the Lord that which cost her something. This is Exactly what God looks for in all our giving. It is not how much we have given, but what it Cost us to give. David said in 2 Samuel 24:24 that, “I will not offer to the Lord my God that which costs me nothing.” This is the Principle all those who became Great for the Lord followed. They give up that which was precious to them. They gave up their Ashes for beauty. They gave up their garbage for Gold. This is Exactly how it is when we look back to all the things we have given up to the service of the Lord. Paul in his own experience said, ” But all these things that I once thought very worthwhile—now I’ve thrown them all away so that I can put my trust and hope in Christ alone. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have put aside all else, counting it worth less than nothing, in order that I can have Christ (Philippians 3:7-8,Living Bible). We can also have a similar experience if we are ready to give up those things which we considered very important.
Dear Friend, Remember Jesus looks at your Heart when you approach the offering box. It is better not to give than give grudgingly. But I beg You with the mercies of the Lord, offer to the Lord that which cost you. Give up those things that are Precious in your eyes. Give up ALL THAT YOU HAVE now, and in years to come, you will look back and say, “I gave up Garbage, but the Lord has given me Gold in return!!!” May the Lord give us Grace to offer our bodies to the Lord cheerfully from now and forever more(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
