The cleansing of the Ten Lepers!!!
Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”  So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.  And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.

So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?”  And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”………. Luke 17:11-19
In our last study, we considered considered Jesus teachings on how causing offenses to others by making them Sin is such a serious thing that it is better to be drown in water than to be a person causing others to Sin. We also noted Jesus teachings on forgiving others no matter what they have done against us and finally, we saw Jesus teaching on to remain Humble after we have served the Lord to the best of our capacity. Today we shall be considering the cleansing of the Ten lepers and how only one returned to give thanks to the Lord.
Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. : Again and again we have seen how tireless Jesus was in his ministry. He was always on the move doing good from one place to another. Ever since He was baptized by the Holy Spirit, this was how He lived His life. It was said about Him in Acts 10:38 that, ” God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”  This should also be our experience after we are baptized with the Holy Spirit. For the gifts of the Holy Spirit is always given for the benefit of others around us. Luke 4:18 says, ” “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to  the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”: So as Jesus journeyed on, Ten needy Lepers met Him. Jesus was very easy to meet. As powerful and busy as He was, yet He was very approachable. All kinds of people have access to Him. He was not like Today’s preachers who are so very difficult to come across. Even when you are chanced to meet them, they are always surrounded by armed Policemen and protocol officers. But Jesus was not like that, anyone could come to Him at anytime. So Here we see Ten Lepers coming to meet Him. Leprosy is always a picture of Sin in the Bible. It is always a sign of God’s displeasure with a Person. Any Leper is considered an outcast to the People of God. But Yet they made their request known to the Lord. They must have heard of how He healed other Lepers and they gathered in Group to meet the Lord. I perceived they were saying to one another, “if He has healed others, what about us?” So they stood afar and Cried out to Him. They stood afar and could not come closer to Him. A sense of our spiritual leprosy should make us very humble in all our approaches to Christ. Who are we, that we should draw near to him that is infinitely pure? We are impure. We should consider it a great privilege that  we have been called to draw nearer to God by the blood of Jesus. We are told in Hebrews 10:19-22, ” Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water”

What was their cry to the Lord? They lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Those who will receive anything from the the Lord must recognize Him as the Master of their lives. It is of no use calling Him Jesus if we will not make Him Lord of our lives. It would be hypocrisy calling Him Jesus and Yet not submit to His commands as the Lord and master of our lives. Notice what they asked for, it was “Mercy”. In all our approach to the Lord, our first need is MERCY!!! No wonder Hebrews 4:16 says, ” Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain MERCY and find grace to help in time of need.” Even if the Lord does not heal us of our Sickness for reasons best known to Him, if we get mercy from Him, that should give us great Joy.
So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”: Jesus has no particular rule book for healing and attending to people’s need. He did not tell them positively that they should be cured, but told them go show themselves to the priests. This was a trial of their obedience, and it was fit that it should be so tried. Naaman who was also a Leper in the old testament was tested in the same way when Elisha said to Him, ” “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean”. “Note, Those that expect Christ’s favours must take them in His way and method. Some of these lepers perhaps would have said, “If He knows He is not healing us, let Him tell us plainly!!! Why all this stress of going to the priest to ridicule ourselves. We heard that He First touched and healed a Man of His leprosy then told him to go and show himself to the Priest and make the necessary sacrifice(Matt 8:2-4). Why didn’t He do the same to us? He does not love us!!! He is not willing to Help us.”. This is how many have come short of what the Lord has for them. This is how many have missed God’s purpose and deliverance for their lives. They expect the Lord to relate with them the same way He related with others. They expect to have the same experience they have read or heard from others. They have forgotten that faith comes by simple hearing and obedience to the word of God. They believe in the testimonies of others than what the Lord says. Let me give you a simple example of how many have missed God’s will for their lives. Jesus says in Acts 1:8 that, ” You shall receive POWER when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”. But because People believe in the stories and experience of others, they have indirectly changed this verse to, ” You shall receive GIFTS OF TONGUES” when the Holy Spirit has come upon You. And what is the result of this, You see people who claim to speak in Tongues who lack the power to walk in victory over Sin. You see believers who claim to be baptized in the Holy Ghost and Yet are not witnesses of Christ even in their home. I am not against speaking in Tongues. To the Glory of God, I speak in Tongues but I recognize that Tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit just as ability to work Miracles is a gift. Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Definitely Not!! (1 Corinthians 12: 29-30)”. It is extremism to say, “The mark that you are filled with the Holy Spirit is speaking in Tongues”. To me, the Marks that a Man is filled with the Holy Spirit is ‘Power to Walk in Victory over Sin and become an Effective Witness for Jesus Christ”. So Simple obedience to God’s word and not in the experience and testimonies of others is what we must long for. The way God relates with each believers may be different.
And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.: Thank God they obeyed. Thank God they Followed the simple words of Christ. Thank God they did not reply and depend on the testimonies of others. Thank God they did not waste time in argument and analysis of others experience with the Lord. They obeyed the simple word of Christ. How I wish many Brothers and Sisters will just do this. Simple obedience to what you read in the Bible and not what you read in a biography or other  books. Other books are good but if they begin to draw us away from what is written to their own fantasies, we must learn to take away the dross from the Gold.. No wonder The Holy Spirit said through Paul, ” I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted” Christ is very simple, just obey the Simplicity of His Words. It is as we obey His simple words that we enjoy the benefits of it.
And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan: What do we see here, in their time of need, they all raised their voices, but after they had received the answers to their prayers, only one raised His voice in gratitude glorifying God. This is exactly the percentage of people who recognize the need to give thanks to God is less than 10% today. Among Ten lepers, only one out of ten came back. Today, the percentage is perhaps less than one out of hundred. Hundred people will raise their voices to God in time of need and say, “Lord Please Have mercy on us”. And when God grants that request, how many people out of these Hundred think of coming back in equally loud voice and publicly declare their gratitude to God for answered prayer? Very very few. But as soon as this Leper saw that He has been Healed, the very first thing He thought of was to go back to the Author of His deliverance. He fell at Jesus feet and gave thanks. Oh what a beautiful picture of a grateful heart. I perceive He was saying, “Oh Lord, who am I that you have done such a great thing for Me? Who am I that you have taken away my Shame and reproach? I will forever remain at your feet in worship!!!! I want nothing more than to fall at your feet glorifying you” Shame on believers who are day dreaming of how many crowns will be given to them and how they will seat and reign with the Lord. Guess what, those who got crowns in Heaven cast it down at His throne in Heaven(Revelation 4:10).My advise for you, “Get use to casting your crowns down at his feet here on Earth lest you be disappointed and offended when you have to cast it down at His feet when we get to Heaven”.

Notice also, it was said that, “He was a Samaritan”.He is One who is not a Jew. He did not have the same understanding of Scriptures like the others. Again and again, Jesus points out that the Samaritans and prostitutes and thieves, Tax collectors who don’t appear to be be so religious very often respond to God in a far better way than many who have so much knowledge of the Scriptures and who preach so much and talks so much about the things of God. It is good for us who know so much of the Scriptures to ask ourselves whether we fall into the category of those who glory in our knowledge of God’s word and in the fact that we are serving God by preaching when we don’t have the practical life that is Manifested by the Good Samaritan man who helped the Man on the road side or this Samaritan Leper who expressed his gratitude to God that He has been healed.
So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?”: Shame on us if the Lord has to look at those who returned back to him in appreciation and find us missing. Does the Lord has to say to any one of us that “were you not Cleansed? Were you not among the group I had mercy upon? Then why didn’t you return to give Glory to God?
And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”: This man received more than just healing from leprosy. This is the wonderful thing that happens when we give thanks to God, we receive more than just an answer to prayer. Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;And to him who orders  his  conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.(Psalm 50:23)”. When you offer sacrifice of Thanksgiving to God, you make a way for God to show you further deliverance in your life. So learn to mingle Thanksgiving with your prayers even when you are anxious. God’s word says, ” Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God(Philippians 4:6). Let us therefore develop this wonderful habit of Thanksgiving that we may see further Salvation from the Lord.
Dear Friend, Let us sit down and learn from the Feet of this Leper that we may know how to approach God in prayer and thanksgiving. Let us take away complains from our lips that we may see the Glory of the Lord in our lives. May the Lord give us Grace to apply these truths to our lives.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
