Taking the Lowly Place and making Dinner for the Poor!!!
Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. ………. So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”…… Luke 14:1,7-14
In our previous study, we noted why many who are seeking to enter the Narrow Gate will not be able because they were not willing to strive for it and pay the price attached to it. We noted that there will be regret on the Judgement Day for those who are workers of iniquities despite they Call Jesus, Lord!!!. Today we shall consider a practical charge that the Lord gave to the people that were invited to the Dinner along with Him.
Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely.: This is one beautiful thing that we see in Jesus, that He did not visit the Home of only His Disciples. Very often, we see Him visiting the Home of a crook like Zacchaeus, and even religious Hypocrites like the Pharisees. Sometimes we can be so Super Spiritual that we try to be more spiritual than Jesus when we choose not to visit the Home of Sinners and Hypocrites. Jesus was not like that. He was a friend of Sinners and He longs to bring Sinners to Salvation. The reason why we are selective of whose house to visit is because we are not Longing to bring Sinners to salvation. Jesus will go to the House of anyone, even the Pharisees who are always looking for fault in Him because He wish to save them.
However, when we choose to follow Jesus example here, we must make sure that the people we choose to visit do not overpower us into Sin. We must ensure that we are influencing those whom we visit towards God. If we discover that they are influencing us to Sin, it is better not to visit such house. Jesus could visit any house because He was stronger spiritually than those whom He visited and they could not draw Him into Sin.
So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: Jesus observes us to know the motive behind our choice, even when we pick a particular seat. Let us therefore be careful in choosing a seat at an event for our Saviour is watching.
“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. : This is a very practical suggestion and Jesus spoke in the level of Common sense to avoid public humiliation. But it was more than that. Jesus was trying to point out the Lust for Honour deeply rooted in Man’s Flesh. There is a great lust in man to seek Honour in public places.
But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. : Jesus was saying even if you are a selfish person seeking Honour from others, the sensible thing to do is to go and sit at the Last place and be invited up higher rather than to go and sit at the first place and be push down lower when somebody bigger than you come for the event.
But of course we understand that Jesus was speaking of how it is going to be in God’s Kingdom. If we seek for place of Honour today in the Church, God may have to push us down one day when He finally sorts out the sitting arrangements in the final day in the Kingdom. It is far better to take a low place and to be invited up higher by the Lord.
It is in this context, He said, ” For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”: This is a Spiritual principle in the Kingdom of God. Do you want exaltation by God in the Final day? Or Do you want exaltation in the eyes of Men today? Are you willing to be misunderstood, rejected, despised and Humbled in the eyes of Men today so that one day when Jesus comes, He will determine proper place for all of us. Very often, we have the lust to determine the proper place for each person but that is part of the desire to be like God. We cannot assess right. It is far better to leave it to God to decide that. He will decide who should be exalted and who should be Humbled.
However, He has told us the basis on which He is going to do it. We know that Jesus has been exalted to the highest place in Heaven. Philippians 2:5-9 says, ” Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,” This verses shows us why Jesus was exalted. It was not because He was the Son of God, but because He Humbled Himself. And Because He was the Humblest among all human being that ever lived, He has been exalted to the Highest place by the Father. We can then ask ourselves, ‘Who will be sitting next to Jesus in the Kingdom of God?’. The answer is very clear, it is those who have Humbled themselves to the greatest extent next to Jesus. Not many who think that they have been very radical and wholehearted. Humility is the Greatest virtue in the Christian race. Let us therefore go to Jesus and learn what it means to be Humble. Jesus says, ” Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and Humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(Matt 11:29)”. Dictionary will not teach you how to be Humble, it is by learning Jesus that we know what True Humility is.
Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. : After Jesus had corrected those who came for the Dinner, He corrected the person who invited Him for Dinner. This is another thing Jesus was trying to correct, “Doing good when we hope to be repaid for it” whenever we do good to those who will repay us in future, we lose our rewards in Heaven.
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” : How many Believers are there who even attempt to follow this principle? Doing good to those who will never repay you. Giving gifts to those who will never be able to give you gifts. Blessed is such a Man or woman who do this for He or she will be repaid by the Lord at the resurrection of the Righteous before the whole world. This is what we should all long for that God should rewards all our hidden lives and all the hidden goods we have done.
Dear friend, there is going to be a sitting arrangement in the Kingdom of God, some will be closer to Jesus while others will be far away. Where will you be? It is not just a matter of getting to Heaven, it is a matter of sitting closer to Your Bridegroom in eternity. No reasonable Bride wants to stay far away from Her Bridegroom in a beautiful place like Heaven. Where will you be? Now is the time to Humble Yourself. The more Humble you are, the closer your chances of getting that seat next to Jesus. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.(2 Corinthians 9:24). May the Lord give us wisdom and open our understanding in every situation where we need to Humble ourselves in Jesus name (Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
