The Parable of the Barren Fig tree!!!
He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’”……. Luke 13:6-9
In our previous Study, we were considering Jesus’ response to those who told Him about the death of the Galilean whom Pilate has used for their sacrifice. We noted that the way we die does not necessarily correlate with how Holy or spiritual we are. Here we shall consider a very short simple parable that Jesus spoke to His Disciples.
A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard: We are like fig tree planted in God’s vineyard which is the Church. We are planted be God Himself.
and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.: God come primarily to examine our lives to see the fruits of our lives. He came looking for fruits and not the gifts we have. Fruit is what Jesus emphasizes. He said in John 15:8, ” By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” He says, “By their fruits you shall know the false prophet and the True ones(Matt 7:20). Don’t ever evaluate your spirituality by the gifts you have. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’(Matt 7:22-23). These were groups that has gifts but no fruits.
Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ : Consider the patience of the Lord!!! He gives us years after we have been born again to see fruits. He waited three years for this fig tree to bear Fruits. How long have you been born again now? How long? Will the Lord have to say this to you, “I come seeking fruits of Repentance upon you for your tree years but I found none, not even one!!!” it is a very serious thing to be part of the Church and Yet not bear Fruits. It is a very serious thing to be part of those planted in the Vineyard of God and Yet remain barren.
So the owner suggested that the Fig tree be cut down!!! When we refuse to bear Fruits, we are only preparing ourselves for destruction. Why should God give us more days on Earth if we have failed to bear Fruits? Why should God allow us to remain as part of the Church if we have refuse to change our characters? Why should we enjoy Grace if we have only made it a license to Sin?
But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’”: Here we see a picture of Christ’s intercession for our lives with the Father. We owe it to Christ, the great Intercessor, that barren trees are not cut down immediately: had it not been for his interposition, the whole world had been cut down, upon the sin of Adam but he said, Lord, let it alone. The only reason why many Believers who have failed to bear Fruits are still alive today is because Christ is pleading with the Father on their behalf. This is how we must pray for our brothers and sisters who have been barren if we are followers of Christ.
Notice, it is not enough that we just pray and plead on their behalf, we must arise and dig around them. We must spend more time and energy on those that are barren. We must pay more attention to ensure that they are taught the Truths of God’s word clearly. We must fertilize them with God’s word. This is the way we must go if we long to see barren tress bring forth fruits. But there are very few leaders who are willing to take such pains over their flock. Let us therefore learn from Jesus who never wish that anyone should be cut off from the earth without repenting. Let us Labour over those whom the Lord has given unto us until we see the fruits worthy of the Glory and beauty of God springing forth from their lives.
Dear Friend, How long have you been born again now? How long have you been planted in the Vineyard of God? Where are the fruits the Lord is seeking in your life? Repent and bring forth fruits worthy of the nature of God lest you be cut off from Grace. John 15:2 says, ” Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away”. Fear!!! Lest You be taken away!!! May the Grace of God work upon us that we may become fruitful in Jesus name.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
