The Parable of the Midnight Friend!!!
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”………….. And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask Him!”………. Luke 11:1-13
In our previous study, we consider an incident that took place in the house that Jesus was invited to. We see Martha having a complaint against Mary her sister for not helping out in the kitchen but just sitting at the Lord’s feet listening to His Word. We saw the rebuke that the Lord gave Martha teaching us that all our service must flow from what we have heard from the Lord. Here we read of Jesus teaching His Disciples how to pray particular for the Gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT.
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.: Here we read that Jesus was praying in a certain place and it was obvious that the Disciples were impressed by the way Jesus prayed. This is one of those places which proves to us that it is right to pray in public. Jesus Himself said,” when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.(Matt 6:6)” So here we see Him praying in Public. Jesus prayed both in secret and in public. There were times when He will slip into the Wilderness to pray alone(Luke 5:16). So here He was praying in public and not just a brief prayer but a long one that His Disciples had to wait until He was stopped praying. So I perceive the Disciples were wondering how He could spend such a time in prayer and how He could speak to the Father like this. So they approached the Lord to teach them how to pray. It is only the Lord that can teach us how to pray by the Help of His words and the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore approach Me to lead and direct us even in prayer lest we pray amiss.
It is in answering the request of this Disciple that Jesus taught them to pray. It is not just the Lord’s Prayer as it is known from Verses 2-4 that Jesus taught them but the parable that follows. We have Considered the Lord’s Prayer while we were going through the Gospel of Matthew so we will skip that and go straight to the Parable.
And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; : Having learnt from the Lord’s Prayer to call God our Father who is Almighty and seat in Heaven, having prayed for the coming of God’s London on Earth and His will. After we have prayed for the forgiveness of our sins because we also have Forgiven others and also for our Daily Bread. The next thing we have to learn is persistence and praying for the need of other people. Maybe you have bread but there is a Brother of yours who have come to your house at an awkward hour of the night and you are saying to God, “Give us our Daily bread!!! Have got mine, but My Brother needs bread”. This is the point of this parable. Jesus spoke about our concerns for our brother. A Brother coming to you and you don’t have anything to set before Him. According to the interpretation of this Parable, I go to God and I say to,” God please Give me three loaves. Not for myself this time but for my brother”.
There are number of lessons we can learn from this parable. A truly spiritual man is always concern for the need of his brothers and sisters. The need of those who have come to his house or church or His Fellowship is uppermost in His Heart? He doesn’t just preach to them. But approach the Lord in prayer on their behalf. This man did not get up and give a lecture to his friend. The point here is that we must go to God when you see a need in our brothers and sisters. It is easy to preach to others and that’s what a lot of people do but very very few pray for their Brethren in Christ. What is the point of this parable, the point is “Pray for Your Brother’s need even if you have no need of your own”. This is how to pray!!! When you see a Brother in need, don’t just bypass Him. Don’t be like the priest and Levite in the Good Samaritan story. Pray to God to meet their need. Pray that Your brother will be helped if He is hungry. Pray that God will give you the loaves to give him. Maybe He needs a word of Encouragement, Maybe He needs something which you don’t have, maybe you need a supernatural gifts from God to meet that need. Why should we covet to prophesy?(1 Corinthians 14:1). This is because this is how we can bless our brothers. Have you ever thought of seeking God in prayer to be able to Edify, exhort and comfort others with a supernatural word from God? This is how we are to pray seeking God for the power of the Holy Spirit, for the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that we can bless others. The Holy spirit gives us fruits and it gives us gifts. But have you noticed one difference between the two. The fruit is for ourselves but the gifts are to bless others. You are the one that enjoys Love, Joy, Peace, long suffering, Goodness, gentleness,. It is your character that is being built up through the fruits but the gifts are meant for others. If you prophesy, it is someone else that is blessed. If you have the gifts of healing, it is to bless others, word of wisdom and knowledge is to bless someone else. Even speaking in tongue is to get edified and fresh so that you can bless somebody else. Ultimately, the purpose of All the gifts of the Holy Spirit is to bless others. So what we see here is a Man going to the Lord saying, “Lord give me three gifts of the Holy Spirit to bless My brother.!!” This is how we must ask the Father to give us the gifts of Holy Spirit. We must ask for the gifts because we want to bless others. Not because we want Honour in the world. There many believers like the Prodigal Son who receives Gifts from the Father yet spent it on selfishly on themselves. And if they continue like that, they will end up with the Pigs like the Prodigal Son. Let us therefore go the the Lord in prayer so that we might receive gifts of the Holy Spirit to help our brothers and sisters who are in need.
and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’ I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs. : Just because you didn’t get an immediate answer to prayer, what should you do? Give up? Not at all. We must persist!!! Maybe you prayed once and you didn’t get it, go back again in prayer. God test us to see if we are persistent in prayer. Hebrews 6:12 says, ” Do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” A faith without patience is a counterfeit faith. A faith without Perseverance is a fake. So here we see Perseverance in this Man because He knows He will get it. How much more will your Heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask Him like this!!!
So I say to you, ask, and keep on asking like this and it will be given to You. Many people ask once and they stop and get nothing. Just imagine this Man has gone to His neighbors house and knocked once, and because He got a negative response He came back home and told his friend, “well, I tried but I couldn’t get anything.” Well, He could clear his own conscience that He tried but you cannot say He really had a sufficient concern for His friend. Here we see persistence in asking and asking and asking. He kept on knocking on the door asking for the Loaves. Seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock, and keeps up knocking and it will be opened you. For everyone who asks like this, receives, and he who seeks like this finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Now do you see the reason why we have not received when we asked?.Now do you see the reason why the door has not been opened onto us? It is those who ask, knock and seek like this Man that gets gifts from God to bless others.
If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask Him!”: If you ask God for the Holy Spirit, do you think you are going to get an Evil Spirit? There are some who think like that and have that fear. It is amazing how some people think!!! They think if they go to God, He will give them Evil Spirit. They are afraid of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Don’t insult God. He is far more loving than any Earthly Father. If you ask out a concern for the Glory of God, and out of a concern for the need of your Brother and with persistence and faith you will certainly get because God delights to give us the gifts of the Holy Spirit to bless others. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.(James 4:2-3). What a regret would it be if the Lord had to say to anyone of us that, “If only you have waited and prayed a little more, I would have used you to bless the whole world and accomplish great things through you!!!”
Dear Friend, Do you desire to be a blessing to those who are in need around you? Do you want to receive the supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit? God to the Lord in prayer so that you can receive that which will be used to bless other lives. Knock on His doors in prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Knock and keep on knocking until you become a blessing. Seek and Keep on seeking until Rivers of Living Waters begin to flow through you. Remember that Lord is more eager to give us His gifts than we are more willing to receive it. If you have not received the gifts of the Holy Spirit to bless others, it is definitely your fault and not God’s fault. It is because you were not persistent about it like this Man. Let us therefore come with boldness to the Lord in prayer that we might receive the Loaves of the Holy Spirit to bless our Brothers. May the Lord give us a heart that is concern about the need of others and persistence in prayer(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
