Grace and Truth from the Mouth of Jesus!!!
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’” Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way……. Luke 4:20-30
In our previous Study, we saw Jesus going into the synagogue to read the Scriptures which was His regular Custom and we consider the particular place He opened to speaking about  what the Spirit upon Him has commissioned Him to do. Today, we shall consider the reactions of all those who heard Him speaking in the synagogue on that Particular day.
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, : There is something we can learn from those who are in the synagogue. It was said that they fixed their eye on Jesus. It is a good thing to always fix our eyes on Ministers as they speak God’s word to us in the Church Meetings. Maintaining Eye contact help us understand and comprehend what is being said faster, for the heart follows what the eyes sees. Those whose eyes wander about during sermon retain less of what is being said. Let us therefore learn to fix our eyes upon Jesus as He speaks in and through His Ministers.

When we keep our eyes fix on Jesus, we can then be sure that He will speak His Words to us. When Jesus noticed that All eyes were fixed upon Him, He then began to speak. This is always God’s method in speaking to anyone. If we show no interest, then He will not speak to us. But the moment our interest is upon Him and His Words, He speaks. When God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, the first thing God seeks to do was to gain Moses attention. And the Moment Moses said, ” “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!(Exodus 3:3-4)”. The Lord is more eager to speak to us, why most of us have not heard Him is that we have not turned aside from every other thing to fix our gaze on Him. Moses turned aside from the Sheep in order to hear God, will you also turn aside from your phone, will you turn aside from your friends and gist in order to Hear God speaking to You?
“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”: Just as we have been seeing from our previous lessons that Jesus lived his life fulfilling the Scriptures which was God’s wills for His Life. Here tells us how Jesus discovered the will of God for His Life. None of us knows the Particular reason why we were born on Earth. And there is no way we can know if we don’t have the Habit of reading the Scriptures. Even for Jesus to know the Particular Ministry God the Father has anointed Him for, He had to find it in the Scriptures. No wonder the Bible says, ” Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Romans 12:2)” It is as we renew our minds with the study of God’s Word that we know God’s perfect and acceptable will for our lives. Let us therefore hear what God wants to fulfill in the Scriptures through our life on Earth.
So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”: The Words of Christ are words of Grace. All who heard Him wondered at His Words. And Even today, All who have truly Heard the Lord always Come to say, “what Manner of Man is this!!! For Grace is poured upon His Lips” They knew Jesus as a Little Child, they saw Him grew up in their midst, they knew Him to be an ordinary Carpenter’s Son but they could not deny the Fact that an anointing was upon His Words. What God did for Jesus, He will do for us. If we are faithful with our speech in ordinary conversation, then we can be sure that there will be gracious words on our lips when we stand to speak God’s word. If we are careful with the way we use our Tongues to ensure that no corrupt words proceed out of our Lips, then the Lord Himself can send us to Minister to His people. When Prophet Isaiah saw the Glory of the Lord, He suddenly discovered that he was a Man of Unclean Lips and He cried out, “Woe is Me, for I am Ruined(Isaiah 6:5). And it was after the Lord cleansed His Lips that He was commissioned to Go and Preach God’s word(Isaiah 6:6-9). Let us therefore seek at all times that our speech be seasoned with Salt and Grace so that people may respond to God’s word in our Lips.
He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’” Then He said,  “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.: From the way Jesus responded to their commendation about His Gracious words, it seems to Me that they were pleased with Christ’s gracious words, only because they hoped that His Words were the introduction to some wondrous works of his that they have heard that He did in other cities. They have heard that Jesus did mighty Miracles in other villages so they were expecting Him to do more Miracles now that He was in Nazareth which was where He grew up.

But Jesus made it so clear to them that, ” No prophet is accepted in his own country”. This is a Truth that Has been experienced by God’s Prophets through the Centuries that they are not accepted by those people in whose midst they grew up. Relatives and those who have known them from Childhood despise a true Servant of God. And this was true in the case of Jesus. Indeed familiarity breeds contempt!!! Don’t be surprised if those who live in the same house with you despise You for you standing out for God. They know you in your unconverted days. They will judge you more. Just forget about them and look for those who accept you. Don’t waste your time with such people.
But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”: Jesus picked two examples in the Old testament to prove His points. Firstly, when there was Famine in Israel and God wanted to meet the needs of His Servant Elijah, He sent Him to a Gentile Widow despite all the Widows in Israel. Secondly, Only Naaman a Gentile was cured during the time of Elisha. The Lord was trying to teach them that a new dispensation is coming now when the God is reaching out to the Gentiles.
So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, : The Jews had this idea that they alone were God’s chosen people. They had this concept that God only cares for the Nation of Israel and every other nations of the World are not God’s people. They were angry that Jesus was showing them from Scriptures that God also loves and care for other nations of the World.
And they rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. : Can You Imagine!!!! How fast it is for people to change!!! These were the same set of people who just about two minutes earlier were appreciating Jesus and admiring the anointing of the Spirit that was Manifested in the gracious words that proceeds out of the mouth of Jesus. How come they changed so fast!!! This is the nature of Man!!! Immediately Jesus began to speak about God’s ultimate purpose about the Plans He had for those in other Lands, that He cared for them and was going to reach out to them, they were angry. They were not willing to accept anything that does not suit their understanding and convictions even though the Examples were taken from God’s word. They were so mad at Jesus that they wanted to kill Him. They did not just send Him out of the synagogue, but they wanted to Kill Him!!! The Glory of God was Manifested in Jesus full of Grace and Truth. He spoke Gracious Words, and He spoke Truth about the Reality of God’s purposes for the World. Grace is acceptable to so many people but when Truth is proclaimed, that is the Time people are tested. Many people will love to hear a Message that contains only Grace and this would be heresy. Because if only one side of the Truth is proclaimed, it becomes Heresy. To have a balanced Christian Life, we must pay attention to  messages that Speak on Grace and Truth. If we concentrate on Truth only, we will become Judgemental and hard on people. And if we concentrate on Grace only, we will become Compromiser in many areas. A Truly Spiritual person is one who is full of 100% Grace and 100% Truth. This was Jesus standard!!! He was not 50% Grace and 50% Truth. He was 100% in both. All of us are not balance like Jesus. It is either we have more of Grace and less of Truth or vice versa. But we must press on towards perfection of becoming like Jesus who was Full of Grace and Truth.
Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way: hmmmmm!!! What Happened? How could this be? Perhaps there was an argument among the Crowd about what to do or the best way to kill Him. Maybe some suggested that they stone Him and others suggested that they just push Him down the cliff. And maybe as they were all arguing with one another, they lost sight of Jesus, and He quietly walked away. This is the wonderful truth we can learn from the Life of Jesus which is a great comfort to us also that God’s care for us is so great. No one can touch us without God’s permission!!! No one could kill Jesus until God’s time. They tried by the did not succeed. God can control everything to save His Servant from Death when it is not yet time. As God the Father cared for Jesus, He cares for His Servants. If we have one ambition on Earth to do the will of God and glorify Him and walk as Jesus walked, then you can be certain that no accident, Sickness, Assassin, Cancer…. Etc can kill us until we have finished our ministry on Earth.
Dear Friend, If You fear God, You don’t need to fear any other thing. The hair of your heads are numbered. None of it falls without your Father Knowing about it. His care over You is so great!!! Continue to speak His words of Grace and Truth without Fear. You are IMMORTAL until you have finished the Will of God for Your Life. May the Lord cause us to Grow to be balanced in Grace and Truth as we press on towards perfection(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
