The Ministry of the Spirit Upon!!!
……… Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read and He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:  “The Spirit of the  Lord is  upon Me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to  the  captives. And recovery of sight to the blind, To  set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him……. Luke 4:14-20
In our last study, we were considering the Ministry of John as a voice in the wilderness. And we saw the kind of practical message that John preached to prepare the People for the first coming of the Lord. We also considered the effect of John’s preaching  on different kinds of people coming to ask Him, “What shall we do?”. Today, we shall consider what Jesus did immediately after He had overcome the Temptations of the Devil in the Wilderness after fasting for 40 days and nights.(NOTE: Events that has been fully Covered  When we went through the Gospel of Matthew Verse by Verse were Skipped).
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.: Yesterday, we noted that God’s method of training and preparing Men and women for ministry is by leading them through the Wilderness experience. In the wilderness, the Lord permits the Devil to test us. God does not tempt people(James 1:13) but He permits the Devil to tempt us because He knows that Temptation is good for Us. There is no way we can prove our Love and devotion to the Lord if we are not tempted. There is no Way to know if our faith is genuine if we don’t face trials and temptation. Many of us think we are strong, Wait for the time you are tempted and then you will discover how weak You are in that particular area. So God Allows us to be tempted so that we may not deceive ourselves. No wonder James 1:12 says, ” Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him”. But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it(1 Corinthians 10:13).

So after Jesus has passed the Wilderness test, He returned in the Power of the Holy Spirit and began to teach in the synagogue. It is when we are faithful in time of Temptations that we become strong in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Those who refuse to say, “NO” to the Devil in time will always feel a dryness in their Spirit when called upon to Minister. There are many who thinks that it is by going to a Bible school that makes them ready for a Ministry, but for Jesus it was not like that. It was by Overcoming Temptations in His private Life. Also note, Jesus began to teach what He has practiced in His own personal Life(Acts 1:1). We are not qualified to preach to others what We have not done in our private lives. Jesus having overcome Temptations has the authority to teach others How to also overcome in time of Temptations. It is hypocrisy to preach what is not True in our lives. It is hypocrisy to preach a standard that we ourselves are not aiming to achieve. Let us therefore be faithful in times of Temptations so that the Lord can approve us to those who are in need around us to lead and instruct them in the way of Righteousness.
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read: Jesus never forget the place He was brought up after He was anointed with the Holy Spirit. Having gone around to surrounding regions, He went back to His own city to be a blessing to them. There are many who are Blessing to those far away but never had time for those who live under the same roof with them. There are many who have a desire to preach the Gospel Message to those in other nations but Yet have no interest in those whom they see regularly. This is not correct!!! Jesus told His Disciples in Acts 1:8 that, ” You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Being witness for Christ must start with those in our immediate environment before going to the End of the Earth.

Notice also, it says that Jesus has a Custom of always going to the synagogue to read. This shows us the way Jesus studied the Scriptures. He always go to the synagogue to read. It became a Custom to Him. There were no Bible written in those days. The only place you can find the Scriptures was in the Temple. So all through those 30 years before He began His public ministry, He studied regularly in the synagogue. Shame on Believers who have the Bible written in their Language, cheaply available in their house and phone and Yet would not read it. When we stand before the Lord, we will have no excuse why we have failed to study our Scriptures. Jesus knew so much at 12 years old not because Of any special abilities, but because He made it His Custom to go to the Synagogue to read. Let us therefore make it out regular habit to read the Scriptures.
and He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:  Jesus knew the Scriptures so well that He can easily open to find a particular passage. Can you do that? Have you familiarize yourself so well with Your Bible to easily open to where some verses are written? There are many Believers who even today cannot find the Passage Jesus opened to in their Bible despite they have it at Home but Jesus who never had one at home was able to find it so fast. Jesus did not have to spend a long time searching and searching to look for the passage. He has familiarize Himself with the Scriptures that He opened it immediately. If we desire to be effective in our services for the Lord and to teach others, we must know where the Commands and Promises are Located in the Scriptures and be able to find and open to it immediately like Jesus did. Let us therefore Be diligent to present ourselves approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.(2 Timothy 2:15).
The Spirit of the  Lord is  upon Me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to  the  captives. And recovery of sight to the blind, To  set at liberty those who are oppressed : This is quotation from Isaiah 61:1-2. And in this verses we see the purpose of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. There are two aspects of the Anointing of the Holy Spirit. There is the “SPIRIT UPON” and the “SPIRIT WITHIN”. And We need both. The Spirit within Builds our Character and produces fruits in our lives. But the Spirit Upon prepares us for Service. The Spirit Upon prepares us for a Particular Ministry and gives us the gifts for service. All the Old testament Saints has the Spirit upon Them but not Within them. They were used by God but their Characters was far below God’s standards. David could write Songs and Psalms but He was too weak to say NO to Sin when He saw Bathsheba. Samson could kill one thousand Philistine Soldiers with an ordinary Jawbone of a Donkey but the Lust within Him brought Him to nothing before Delilah. Moses Spoke with God mouth to mouth and His face shone with Glory but Yet He remained a Slave to Anger. But for Jesus, The Spirit of the Lord was within Him right from Birth all through His Life on Earth as a Man. The Spirit that descended Upon Him at His baptism was to Anointing Him for Ministry. He started His public Ministry immediately the Spirit came upon Him.

So if the Spirit Within is to build our character and produce the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in our lives, what will be Spirit upon do for Us? It is to Serve others. It is to preach the Gospel to others, to proclaim liberty to those that are held captive by the Devil and Sin. It is to proclaim Spiritual sight to others. It is to proclaim liberty to those oppressed by the Devil and Evil Spirit. So we see that the primary purpose of the Spirit upon us is for the he benefit of others and not for ourselves. The Spirit Within is For our personal Lives, the Spirit upon is for the good of others. Yet we see so many people seeking for the Power of the Holy Spirit upon them for Honour and fame for themselves instead of Service. When we seek for the power of the Holy Spirit because we want to serve others and set them free from the captivity that Satan has brought them, then God releases His Spirit upon us. God is more eager to pour His spirit upon us than we are eager to receive it. The reason why we don’t receive the Holy Spirit upon us according to James 4:3 says, “You do not have because you do not ask.You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.: Another interesting thing we noticed that Jesus did when we compare what Jesus read out with what was actually written in Isaiah 61:1-2 was that He did not read the last phrase in Isaiah 61:2 which says, ” To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, AND THE DAY OF VENGEANCE OF OUR GOD”. Jesus did not read the part that spoke about the Day of Vengeance of our God. He only spoke about the acceptance Year of the Lord. This is to teach us that Jesus did not come to proclaim the Day of Vengeance of God. One day He will do that when He returns in Glory but Today is the favorable and acceptable year of the Lord. Also notice acceptable day of the Lord is a whole YEAR (365 days), but Vengeance is for a DAY. Behold the kindness of God!!! God is so long-suffering, gracious and kind that He proclaims Grace for 365 DAYS and Vengeance for one day. God does not desire to punish any one. He wants to forgive. We must have the same attitude. To be quick to forgive others and slow to Judge. This is the Gospel we are to proclaim to others.

Also note this point. Jesus returned the book back. Those who borrow a book and failed to return are not Christ like. Let us therefore check through our books to see the ones we borrowed and have failed to return and make necessary restitution.
Dear Friend, Be faithful in the Wilderness in the time of Temptations, make it your custom to always read your Bible, get yourself familiar with where some important verses are written and long that the Spirit of the Lord be upon and within You. May the Lord give us Grace to apply these to our lives.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
