Jesus Bible Knowledge and Humility!!!
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
In our previous study, we saw how the feast of the passover became an ordinary feast to Mary an Joseph. And how they went to the Temple only to fulfill the days and the Custom of the Feast. And we noted that if these indices are beginning to occur in our lives, it is an indication that we may and Missed the Lord and Yet not know it. So we saw how they returned to Jerusalem to look of Him and Behold in was found in the midst of the Teachers after three days.
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed: Here we see where the interest of Jesus was. Christ interest at the age of twelve(12) were not Primarily to play games and play football. I am sure He must have played like every other kids but He had a sense of priority. Even at the age of Twelve. We can encourage our children to look at Jesus as their example and follow Him in having a sense of priority that God’s word is primary. Remember Jesus grew like every other kids. He did not come to Earth with Bible knowledge already stored in His brain. He took the pain to study and paid attention carefully each time they go to the synagogue. In those days, it was more difficult to even know the Scriptures. The Scriptures were only available in the Temple. It was not printed in books. Only few rich Jews could afford to have a personal copy. And we know definitely that Mary and Joseph were poor and definitely could not afford one at Home. So How did Jesus know so much of the Scriptures at twelve years of age? I believe He must have paid attention carefully each time the Scriptures were read at the synagogue Every Sabbath. And I can imagine Him going to the Synagogue after doing all His house chores during week days to meet the synagogue attendants to borrow and read the Scriptures. This should be a challenge to us!!!! That in such difficult circumstances that surrounds Jesus, Yet He created time to study the Scriptures even as a Little Children. We should cover our eyes in shame if we know so little about the Scriptures even now that we have it so cheap and easily available. God’s Word should be given priority in our lives. The only reason why we fail to study our Bible is because deep down in our hearts, we don’t believe it is God’s Word. We create time for every other thing but not the study of God’s word. We spend hours chatting and doing unnecessary things but spending 20 minutes on God’s word is too much. Many have said to Me, “Please can you reduce the length of this Devotional, it is too long and lengthy and there is no time to read”. I just smiled and say, “If You can set aside,” 10 minutes each day, You will read through”. We create time for things that we value. If you don’t create time to study God’s word, it shows that you don’t value it. The Bible is the only book given by God to Man so that Man Could know Him. There is no Way to Know God without knowing Him through is Word. God will speak to Us through His Word. Anything God will say to Us is through His Word. Many desire to Hear God but have no time to study the Bible. They think God will speak to them through Dreams or Vision. And the Devil manipulates their lives by giving them a false Dream. For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light(2 Corinthians 11:14). Any Dream, Vision and Trance that we claim to have must be confirmed with whatever He has said in His Words. If it does not correlate with what is Written, we can discard such a Dream or vision and throw it into the garbage Bin. One of the Key instrument of overcome Temptation is God’s Word. When Jesus was tempted in the Wilderness, we saw Him replying the Devil with what was already written. Even when the Devil quoted the Bible to Him to lead Him astray, saying, ” If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone(Matt 4:6). we see Jesus replying with another Bible verse saying, ” It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God(Matt 4:7).Teaching us that the The Devil can even quote Bible to us to lead us astray. This is why we must be more diligent to know the whole Scriptures lest the Devil quotes one part of truth to us to mislead us. So as a little Child, Jesus knew so much of the Scriptures and that is one of the secret of His Overcoming Life. For it is written, ” I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one(1 John 2:14).
All who heard Jesus were amazed at His Understanding and answers. They could not understand how a twelve year old boy could know so much about God’s word and who could ask such penetrating question. Let us therefore play our part to ensure that All our children study the Bible and let us give room for them to ask questions. And I can assure you, all those who come in touch with our children will be amazed at their understanding.
and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” .: Here we see another priority that Jesus had. His Father’s business was primary to Him even at that little age. He knew God as His Father as at twelve years of age. His concern was His Father’s business. Everything else was secondary to Him. How difficult it is for us to find even among grown up Believers those who have a sense for the things of God as priority in their lives so that they order their whole life according to how it affects the kingdom of God. This is the main difference between a Child and a Son. A child does not have any sense of responsibility but a Son has a sense of responsibility. And it is when we have a sense of responsibility for the Father’s business that God can commit to us responsibility in His Church and kingdom.
But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them: They could not understand what He said. They were thinking that as the Messiah, He was suppose to be planning to take over the throne of His Father David. Instead of teaching in the Temple. And Even today, there are many who do not understand the Words of Jesus because deep down in their heart, they sought something else. They were thinking of the Messiah as a person who will deliver them from the hands of the Romans and establish His throne on Earth. Many of us are confused About God’s word because we are coming to Him for the wrong reasons. Paul says in Philippians 3:12, ” I press on, that I may LAY HOLD OF THAT for which Christ Jesus has also LAID HOLD OF ME .”. The Reason We come to Christ must correlate with the Reason He is coming to Us. If what we are seeking to lay hold of Him for is different from what He is laying Hold of us for, we will find it difficult to understand His Word.
Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. .: This is an amazing statement that Jesus continued to subject to His Earthly Parent. He who had such an understanding of Scripture that even the Doctors in the Temple were amazed. When He went back to Nazareth, He did not boast about His Bible knowledge or think that His Earthly Parent should submit to Him. Not at all. He obeyed that Scripture which He knew to, “Honor Father and Mother”. God had appointed Joseph and Mary to be His Earthly Parent and He submitted to Them. It is very difficult to submit to people who are not perfect when You are perfect Yourself. Mary and Joseph being an Old Covenant Parent without the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of them must have had issues wrong in their House. They must have been doing things that were wrong in the Light of the New Covenant. But Yet Jesus submitted to Them. Here we see the Glory of Submission. Sin came to the world through rebellion of Satan to God’s Authority but Salvation came through submission and Humility of Christ..
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men: We increase in Favour with God and Men when we understand submission to authority. To submit to an authority That God has placed over us is the first step of following Jesus. Many people think of Jesus public ministry and they think of the Miracles and Powers that Jesus did and have and displayed in His last three and half years on Earth and they long to follow Him there. Well, that’s good and great!!! But we have to begin where He began. And this is in submission to to any authority that God has placed over us. If you are a child leaving at Home or even a grown up Son or daughter, you need to first learn to submit and Honour your parents in anything they tell you to do UNLESS it is contrary to God’s word. Also Husband and wife relationship and in the Church. Submission to Authority is the first thing we must learn about Jesus. And no doubt, He was tempted to rebel against authority just like we are tempted(Hebrews 4:15), But He did not. He overcame in the Power of the Holy Spirit and He opened a new and Living Way for us to follow if we want to follow.
Dear Friend, this is the secret of Jesus Life. And let us therefore learn to create time and Humble ourselves to submit to the authority God has placed over us. May the Grace of God be made available to us in Jesus name. Amen. God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
