Introduction to the Gospel of Luke!!!
Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed……….. Luke 1:1-4
Having gone through the Gospel of Matthew verse by Verse and having touched the events that were not touched in Matthew that were found in the Gospel of Mark, we shall begin to look into the Gospel of Luke.
Luke was the only person who was not a Jew who wrote a portion of Scripture by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. He was a Medical Doctor who was always with Paul because Paul had a thorn in His Flesh which probably needs medical attention from time to time. (Colossians 4:14, 2 Corinthians 12:7). The first book he wrote was the Gospel of Luke and the other book He wrote was the Acts of the Apostles. And He was addressing this to a person called Theophilus(Which means “Friend of God”). Noticing some of the expressions He uses in His introduction, we can learn something very profitable if we will become a faithful minister of God’s word.
Firstly, Luke investigated everything carefully. He was not an eye witness Himself, but He got in touch with eye witnesses and desired to write it out in consecutive order.: If we seek to be faithful ministers of God’s word, we must investigate everything written in the Bible properly. Paul told Timothy, ” Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth(2 Timothy 2:16). The Bible has been written in such a way that ALL the truths are not arranged in a consecutive order. It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter(proverb 25:2). Truths are scattered in all the books of the Bible and we must be diligent to study and find them out so that we can present it to others in the right Order. We must take the pain to ensure that when we speak to people, we present the Gospel in the correct order and not confuse our hearers. Luke took the pains to arrange His writings right from the Birth of John the Baptist to events that happened even after Jesus was risen from the Dead. Luke wrote some events which were not written in any of the other Gospels. Thank God for Brother Luke who through the power of the Holy Spirit took His time that we May know events that happened in Jesus life.
Secondly, there is another thing we can learn from Luke if we want to be accurate Ministers of God’s word and Truth to other people. If we want to be accurate in our life and speech, we must seek to get our information from eye witnesses and servants of the Word. We must go to those who are reliable when we seek to be instructed in the Word of God. Paul told Timothy, ” You must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them(2 Timothy 3:14). We become like our Mentors. We become Like those who we receive instructions from. A student will always defend and stand up for the Truths He has learnt and received from His Teacher. This is why we must be careful in choosing those who minister God’s Truth to us. We must take serious heed to what Paul told Timothy. Make sure You know the kind of Life(Not just His Life in the Church but His home Life ) of Your Mentors. Make sure You are assured that He or she is really following the Lord as Seen in the Scriptures. Again Paul said to Timothy, ” But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me(2 Timothy 3:10-11)” Hebrews 11:7-8 says, ” Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Jesus Christ has not changed and if our Mentor says they are following Jesus, we must clearly see it from the pattern we have of Jesus and His Apostles in the Bible. Jesus has not changed His pattern and He will not change it. If we fail to consider the Lives of those who minister to us, then we are disobeying the Scriptures and we deserve to be deceived. All our mentor must be able to say, “Follow Me as I Follow Christ”. Don’t ever follow a Man who says, “Look at Jesus but don’t Look at Me”. If the Gospel has not transformed Your life, it is Useless sharing it with others. What will you learn from a Minister who has divorced His wife and marries another? Even if He preaches mysteries and Rhema, I am not interested!!! He is not practicing what He preaches. So we must be careful like Luke to go to those who have been transformed and who are faithful ministers of God’s word to receive our teachings. Those who are not trying to interpret God’s word in such a way to make themselves acceptable before Men. For if we seek to please men, we can never be a bondservant of Christ(Galatians 1:10)
Finally, the whole purpose of the Gospel of Luke was so that Theophilus which means “Friend of God” might know the exact truth and the certainty of what He has been instructed. All our service for the Lord, all our writings, all our singing and preaching must be to lead others into knowing the Truths of God. Luke was not writing this because He wanted to impress people about His writings and His investigations. He was not writing this so that the other Gospels will be looked upon as a Minor and insufficient report. He was not writing this in competition with what Matthew, Mark and John has written. Rather, He wrote it so that all those who are, “Friend and Lovers of God” May come to understand the Truths of God’s word. He has come to discover that, “When those who are Friends and Lovers of God Knows the Truth, then they will be free from slavery to Sin. John 8:32 says,” And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Let us therefore seek to ensure that all our service to the Lord is to lead others into experiencing the Life and the Truths that we ourselves have experienced in Christ Jesus.
Dear Friend, there is no partiality with God. He not only uses poor Fishermen like Peter, He used intelligent Doctors Like Luke. But what is required in stewardship is Faithfulness(1 Corinthians 4:2). If you remain faithful in walking in the Light of God’s word, He will also use You to do something that will be a blessing to generations to come. Be Diligent!!! Study to show Yourself approved to God!!! Seek to know the Truths that sets a Man free from the grip of Sin. Don’t fail to declare the whole purpose of God to those whom the Lord has given to You. Remember this, “Only one Life and it would soon be PAST, Only What Christ does through You will LAST”. May the Lord give us Grace, that we might write and do things that will be a blessing to Generations to Come in Jesus name. (Amen). God bless You. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
