On His Way to Calvary!!!
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross…… Matthew 27:27-32
In our previous study, we see how Jesus conducted Himself before Pilate when He was been questioned and accused falsely. He also saw how Pilate went against His conscience simply to maintain His reputation and to gain acceptance from the Majority. Here, we shall see how Jesus was treated and how He was led to the place of Crucifixion.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.: Here we see the barbaric way they treated Jesus. All the Soldiers were gathered against Him. He was stripped naked for our Sins. A robe of shame was put upon Him, thorns came as a result of the Curse God placed on Earth because of Adam’s Sin(Gen 3:18), and on His head was placed a Crown of Thorns. He became a curse for us. On His hand was placed a Reed which is a symbol of authority. They ridiculed Him. They mocked Him. Yet He opened not His Mouth. We know that Christ had to Die for our Sins, but why does God allow Him to go through this painful way before He dies on the Cross? Couldn’t God protect Him from at least all these beatings and ridicule? This is not necessary!!! But God’s way is not Man’s Way. Jesus was to be an Example for ALL the Martyrs in Christian History. So He had to go through all this stages so that other Martyrs can look unto Him as an Example. If you are a Christian Leader, you are also suppose to be a Mini-forerunner for others. We must be able to tell other younger ones around us to Look at our example when We are Persecuted.
Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.: There is a difference in bearing the Cross voluntarily and been compelled or forced to bear the Cross. Jesus said, ” If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me(Luke 9:23)”. Jesus does not Compel anyone to take up the Cross and Follow Him. It is Roman Soldiers that compelled People to bear a cross. Jesus was stumbling and falling as they led Him outside the city gate to be Crucified. So they forced this Man to bear His Cross. This has a spiritual application for us. Whatever we are compelled to do is not the Cross that Jesus has called us to bear. There are things we are forced to do which may bring suffering to us, but that Is not the Cross. The Cross is always something we choose voluntarily. For example, if you have a Sickness, it is not something You have chosen, it came upon You. It was forced on You. That’s not the Cross!!! Nobody chooses Sickness!!! It has no spiritual value. All the people in the world faces difficult situations they never chose. If they have a choice, they would have avoided such situations. But they had no choice, it was forced upon them!!! And Yet Jesus says, ” IF Anyone desires to follow Me, let Him deny Himself and voluntarily takes up his cross and follow Me”. So anything we don’t choose Voluntarily cannot be the Cross. I have heard people say, “My Sickness, My difficult children, My Boss, My Husband, My unemployment etc is My cross. I just have to bear it”. And my question is, “Would you have chosen differently if you have a choice?” would you have chosen Sickness or unemployment if you have a choice?”. Anything forced upon you is not the Cross of Christ!!! The Cross that Jesus spoke about is Something You can get rid of if you want, but voluntarily You chose not to get rid of it because you want to follow Jesus. What then is the Cross Jesus told us to bear? It is something that has to do with our will, ego and Self. It is that thing we have to put to death within us. For example, if you are insulted, you can either choose to respond and insult back or put your Self life and ego to Death. You can either stand up for your right or give it up. The Cross is choosing to deny your own will in order to do the will of God. The Cross is putting our own will to Death!!!! This is the Cross Jesus told us to bear. All humans face difficult situations even when they are not following Jesus. So don’t call your problems Your Cross for You never chose that. You would have chosen differently if you have a choice!!!
We read in Luke 23:27 – 31, ” And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’ For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”: Amazing Words Of JESUS!!..On His Way to Calvary with the Cross, Many women began to pity Him, I Perceive they were Saying” Eeeyah, see this Young Righteous Man o, he Claim to be Holy, yet God Cannot Help Him! Eeeyah, what a Pity”
But My Master turned and said” I Am not a Victim of Pity, Am only Doing My Father’s Will, it could be painful, But It is the Father’s Will, You People should be Weeping for not doing the Father’s Will, You people should be weeping for yourself and Children. For you don’t know what you are doing. A time is coming when you will wish you never had a Child” Like we have seen earlier, 40years after the Crucifixion of Jesus, the nation of Israel was leveled down and the temple was destroyed. Their children were killed and they were all scattered all over the world. Although Jesus forgave them on the Cross, yet because they did not respond to it, Judgement came upon them. People may not understand why the Father has permitted a lot of things to happen to His Children but we must never allow People to weep for us in pity of our circumstances. We must turn to them like Jesus did on His way to calvary and say, “Don’t weep for Me!!!” We must use our life to remind them of the Judgement coming upon those who rejected the will of God for their lives.
Dear Friend, if You were there, what Would You have done seeing Jesus carrying the Cross and falling down on the streets of Jerusalem? Where are all his Disciples who boasted greatly to Die for Him? He paid the price alone. He went there for You and I. He paid the debt He never owed. He went to calvary for you and I. The Day you understand how much it cost Jesus to redeem you, that is the day you will start taking Sin seriously. May the Lord open our eyes that we may always Behold Jesus as He carried His Cross to the Place of Crucifixion.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
