Day 139 – Jesus Trials before Pilate!!!

Jesus Trials before Pilate!!!
Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.

Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You? But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.

Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.” But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!” Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?”

But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”

And all the people answered and said, “His blood beon us and on our children.” Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified……. Matthew 27:11-26
In our previous Study, we saw the False Repentance of Judas when He went to the Priest and Elders to confess His Sin and even made restitution. If only He had gone to Jesus, I am sure Jesus would have Forgiven Him but He was overcome by many sorrows and went ahead to hang Himself. Here we read of Jesus standing before Pilate and his attitude when He was questioned and accused.
Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.: Here we see something wonderful about Jesus. When the Governor asked Him who He was, He gave an answer but when the Chief priest and Elders accused Him, He said Nothing. This is exactly what we must also do, if somebody ask us who will are saying, “Are You a Christian?”, we say “Definitely, I am a Christian!!! I am not ashamed to be known as a Christian”. But when people accuse us falsely, We must remain Silent like Jesus did. Particularly when Religious People accuse us. I am not talking about false accusations at your place of work where you need to state that, “You are not guilty of that”. So that people don’t get a bad opinion and you lose your testimony as a Christian. But When others accuse you that You are a false teacher, false prophet, etc, You must remain silent. We must follow Jesus example never to defend ourselves. Jesus could have if He wanted to and show those accusations to be foolish but He not not because He knew what the Father’s will was and He submitted to it. If we know what the Will of God is for our lives, we will never defend ourselves in times like this. We will always believe in Romans 8:28 which says, ” And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You? But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.: Pilate has seen so many people that were accused but He has never seen one like Jesus who will not give answer to a single charge testified against Him. So He marveled!!! When People see our attitude in time of accusations, they must marveled at us. For this is the Marks of the Sons of God!!! We must conduct ourselves in such a way that even Unbelievers like Pilate will marvel at our conduct. Despite all the accusations, He answered nothing. He had committed the matter to God who judges righteously. 1 Peter 2:20-23 makes it clear. It says, ” For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. FOR TO THIS YOU WERE CALLED, because Christ also suffered for us, LEAVING US AN EXAMPLE, that you should FOLLOW HIS STEPS: “Who committed no sin,Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;  who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously”. We are not called to admire what Jesus did, we are called to FOLLOW in His Steps. He is our Example!!! We have been called as Christians to be accused and treated Wrongly. Look at the ways we are to follow Christ :, He Committed NO SIN, There was no deceit in His Mouth, He did not insult and accuse back when He was accused and insulted, He did not threaten those who Crucified Him by saying, “God will judge you people o. I have done nothing wrong, God will definitely Judge you people”. He never said such a thing!!! This is His steps that we must FOLLOW!!!. We must keep entrusting ourselves to the Lord saying Lord, “Father you know the Truth!! I leave the matter to You.”
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.: There was a custom to release a prisoner during the Passover Feast and Pilate was willing to give Jesus an opportunity to be released so He paired Him with a notorious Criminal known as Barabbas with the Hope that they would rather choose Jesus and condemn Barabbas the Notorious Criminal. Pilate knew for sure that Jesus was innocent but He wanted to be Diplomat, He wanted to ease His conscience and please the people. He knew that they were jealous of Jesus because of His Ministry, popularity and greatest. We find the same thing in Today’s Christianity that those who are morally superior, greater abilities and ministry are always an object of envy among religious leaders. So never be surprised if you are the envy of others.
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.” : We see unbelievers having dreams seeing the Righteousness of Jesus but the blind Priest and Elders could not see it. Look at how God was willing to correct and instruct Pilate so that He may not Sin. His wife said to Him, ” Have nothing to do with that just Man,” Blessed are those who have friends like this who puts a check on us to prevent us from sinning.
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”: The Leaders had such powers to influence the Multitude. The Multitude were like babes tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting(Ephesians 4:14). We are not to allow religious leaders to toss us around. We must have our own convictions. And if those religious leaders are wrong like we see here, if those who carry their Bibles and standing in front are wrong, we must not allow ourselves to be deceived and led astray by them. If you allow religious leaders to influence you in a way contrary to Scriptures, you will definitely go astray.
Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!” Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?”But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” : What an Evil thing to do!!! They preferred a criminal to Jesus. The Multitude demanded that Jesus should be Crucified!!! I am sure in one way or the other, some of those who shouted “Crucify Him” must have benefits from His goodness. But how quick they have forgotten the kindness and goodness of Christ.!!! There are many of us even today who Crucify the Lord again and again in our attitude and actions. We Crucify Him in public by the way we speak and dress. Our attitude to the teachings and principles of Christ seems to indicate that we are saying to Him, “Crucify Him” Let Him who thinks He stands take heed lest He Crucifies the Lord again and again!!!
When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”: Though Pilate had discernment that Jesus was innocent, yet He had no courage of His own convictions. He did not have the courage to stand up for what He knew was the truth. He was more interested in preserving His Position as Governor of the district. He did not want a bad report to go about Him to Caesar that a riot had started in his district. He was more concern about his own Honour than setting a Right Man free. Pilate was exactly in the same category as the High Priest who were seeking their own. Pilate sought His own also. He took water and washed his hands to symbolize that He was innocent. He had a conscience but He still went against it. You can’t cleanse Your Conscience by washing your hands and legs with water as some religion teachings.
And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.” : We see the fulfillment of what they said foolishly 40 years later after the crucifixion of Jesus. The Jews were scattered across the face of the Earth when the Roman General came and destroyed the temple. Indeed the Jews and their children suffered for what they did.
Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.: imagine!!! He washed his hands and Yet flogged Jesus. Hypocrisy!!! The religious leaders were against the Lord, even the government was against the Lord. Jesus said in Matthew 24:9, ” Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.” When we follow Jesus, this can be our fate too. Religious leaders will turn against Us, circular people can turn against us. But Jesus had the satisfaction that He was doing the Father’s will and that should be our satisfaction also when we are condemned by such people.
Dear Friend, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. May the Lord Give us Grace never to take our eyes away from looking unto Jesus who is the Perfect Example(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
