Day 138 – The False Repentance and Hanging of Judas !!!

The False Repentance and hanging of Judas!!!
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”…… Matthew 27:1-10
In our previous Study, we saw the steps in Peter denial of Jesus and how he wept bitterly after He fell but Here we see Judas attitude and approach to Repentance and how He ended His Life.
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.: Here we see the Fulfillment of what Jesus had been repeating to the ears of His Disciples. He told His Disciples earlier that, ” the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify(Matt 20:17-19)” In the time of Jesus, the Jews were under the Rule of the Romans and the Roman Governor has withdrawn the power to put anyone to death from the Chief Priest and Elders. So they could not put Jesus to death. So after they made consultation among themselves, they delivered Him to the Romans who were Gentiles. All these was to fulfill the Scriptures. It is easy for us to begin to think that it was only the Jews that was guilty for the Death of Jesus. But the fact that Jesus was handed over to the Gentiles makes the Gentiles guilty of the same Sin. Both the Gentiles and the Jews had a hand in the death of Jesus. And this is why both of them needs Salvation. For All have Sinned. Also we see a picture of Religious Leaders using their influence in government to condemn a Righteous Man. This has been true in the history of Christianity, religious leaders accusing a Godly Man falsely and getting the government to be against such a Man.
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.: I have a feeling that because Jesus had escaped situations of being arrested like this Many times, Judas thought Jesus will escape again. So He was like “I am sure He will escape and I will get the Money offered also”. He was so greedy and covetous for money that despite all the warnings of Jesus that one of His disciples was going to betray Him, yet it never made him changed his mind. Indeed the Love of Money is the root of all Evil. Once we begin to love money, whether we know it or not, other evil will find expression in our lives. So when Judas saw that Jesus allowed Himself to be captured, He felt remorse because He thought of all the goodness the Lord has done for Him for many years. He felt bad about it. He did not go and weep bitterly and say, “Lord forgive Me”. He only felt bad about it. Even murders feels bad when they see their victims groaning out in pain in the last moment before they die. This is a Repentance that was false. It was not a turning away from Sin instead it was feeling bad about the consequences of your Sin. When you feel bad because you saw people’s reaction to your Sin, that is a false Repentance. You can even make restitution by returning money that is not yours and still not repent. So Judas went to the Priest. This is the first time we read of a Man who have sinned going to the priest to confess. Instead of going to the priest to say, “I Have sinned”. If He had gone to Jesus to confess His Sins, his end would have been different. Judas problem was not that He fell or betrayed Jesus, His problem was that He did not go to Jesus to confess. People don’t go to Hell because they Sin, but they go to Hell because they don’t repent of their Sins. All our sins has been paid for on the Cross, there is no need for a single person to go to Hell. Even the terrible Sin of betraying Christ can be forgiven. But He went to the priest to confess His Sins just like Many do even today. All our sins must be confessed to God alone through Jesus Christ. We are never to go to a Man, Priest or Church Leaders to confess our Sins. Where did Peter confessed His Sin? He didn’t go to any priest. He was broken before the Lord. And that is what broke Him and changed Him. This was the difference between Peter and Judas. The two of them were in the same group, they were listening to the same message and walking with the same Lord for three and half years, failing the Lord in the same way, yet when they sinned, one turned to the Lord, the other turned to the Priest. And they both went different ways. Don’t ever go to anybody to confess Your Sins!!! The only Sin that you must confess to Man is the one you commit against them. There is no such thing as confessing to a priest or public confession of Sins in the Church. Man cannot forgive You Your Sins, what is the point of going to Man? I repeat, “ALL Sins must be confessed only to God. The only Sin that is to be confessed to Man is the ones You have committed against them”
And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”: Look at the response Judas got when He confessed His Sin to the Priests and Elders. Let me paraphrase what they said, “Judas, how does your Sins concerns us? What is our business with Your Sins? Why are you telling us that, You have sinned and betrayed an innocent Man? What can we do about it? See to Your Sins yourself!!! You are on your own in this Matter!!! There is nothing we can do for you!!! ” How I wish those who go about feeling sorry for their Sins and Looking for people to confess to will see and hear this. I have made it a rule in my Life never to allow anyone to confess their Sins to Me since they have not wronged Me. Immediately I sense that someone wants to confess His or Her Sins to Me, I say, “I am not interested in knowing whatever Evil you have done. All I know is that go to Jesus and confess it to Him”. I can advise You on how to go about a Matter if you insist but I don’t ever want to know the wrong You have done. There is a great Lust in us to know about the Sins of others and this is an area where we have to discipline ourselves never to be interested in knowing what Evil others has committed. Instead lead them to God to confess their Sins to Him and only Him.
Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. : What a tragic end. “It is better for that Man if He had not been born” Jesus said.
But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” : Look at these Pharisees.,  they were disturbed and careful not wanting to put such a money into the Treasury but they were not disturbed to condemn and bribe to put and innocent man to death. This is exactly a typical example of a Pharisees. He swallows a Carmel and strain out a gnat. They only maintain a form of Godliness but denial the power of it. Are you like this?
And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.: Everything that happened to Jesus was in fulfillment of Scriptures and even when other people betrayed Him, that was also in fulfillment of Scriptures and even the things that happened to those who betrayed Him was in fulfillment of Scriptures. When we live in the will of God like Jesus, everything that happens to us will work together for our good. God’s purposes are fulfilled. Whether people do good to us or accuse us falsely. Whether they deny us or betray us, or support us, Everything will work together for God if we Love God and are called according to His purpose(Romans 8:28). We must be gripped with this Truth that God has a predetermined plan for our life like He had for Jesus and if we Humble ourselves and walk in brokenness in the foot of Jesus, that plan will be fulfilled irrespective of the Evil people do to us
Dear Friend, there is no Sin that cannot be forgiven if you confess it to Jesus and repent of it. Don’t hang yourself. Go to the cross of Jesus and plead for mercy. Don’t go to Man. May the Lord give us Grace never to be too proud to go to Jesus to acknowledge our Failures in Jesus name(Amen).God bless you. Have a blessed day.
