The Announcement of His Death and The Anointing at Bethany!!!
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His Disciples , “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” Then the chief priests, the Scribes , and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.”But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them,“Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.
Finally, we have come to the last few days of Jesus before He was Crucified. And it is interesting to note that the last teachings recorded here was to be faithful with the gifts He has given us(Parable of the Talent), how to keep an inner life and not just have a form of Godliness without the Power within(Parable of the Virgins), and our relationship with other believers to provide Help when they are in need. Here we read of the notifications Jesus gave concerning His Crucifixion and the Anointing at Bethany and the negative reactions of His Disciples.
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His Disciples , “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” : Here we see Jesus reminding His Disciples again about his death but here He was more specific about the particular day. It was a hard saying so they need to hear it again and again. There are some truths in God’s word that needs to be heard again and again till it grips our hearts. For We are so quick to forget spiritual truths but quick to remember evil Things. So let us never be offended when we keep hearing the same sermon for it is for our good. There are so many stories that were repeated in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This was written so that we may read it again and again until we are gripped by it. Notice also that Jesus spoke about His death after He had finished all His sayings. No one could kill Jesus until He had finished all His Sayings. No one could catch Him until He had finish the will of His Father. There is no partiality with God, what He did for Jesus, He will do for Us if we walk in the footsteps of Jesus. If No one could kill Jesus until He had finished His Sayings, Then No one can kill us until we have finished what God has given us to say on this Earth. The keys of Death and Hades are with Jesus(Revelation 1:18). It is Jesus who determines when to open the door of Death for any of His Disciples. We must never live our lives in fear of Death. As Far as I am concern, “I am IMMORTAL” until I have finished the Will of God for My Life. No Accident, Sickness, Poison, Cancer, and any disease can take My Life Until I have finished the will of God for My Life. Let us therefore be gripped by this Truth for the Father Loves Us exactly as He Loved Jesus(John 17:23). Also notice that Jesus spoke about His Death immediately after He spoke about the persecution and sufferings that His Disciples will face in the Tribulations just before His coming. In any suffering and persecution we face on Earth as Christ’s Disciples, we must never forget that He also suffered. When we think about the Sufferings of Jesus, it gives us strength to persevere in our own suffering also. This is why we are told to run this Race looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2).
Then the chief priests, the Scribes , and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him .But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.” : It is a shameful thing when those who should have led the people to the fear of God lacks the fear of God themselves. We see the Chief priest, the Scribes and the Elders Plotting to Kill Jesus simply because they were Jealous of His Ministry and because He exposed their hypocrisy and errors. It is the same also today. All those who seek to walk in the footsteps of Jesus would be hated by the religious leaders of their days. And they gathered at the Palace of the High Priest to plot such Evil. The Palace where instructions for Godliness should have been given has become a Place where Evils are being plotted. Let us therefore be careful lest our house and church where instructions on how to live a Godly life should be passed becomes a place where gossips, bitterness, jealousy and all sorts of Evil dwells. They were afraid to kill Jesus during the feast, not because they fear God but because they feared the people. There are many who restrain themselves from Sins not because they fear God but because they are afraid of what people may say. They would gladly commit Sin as long as they know they cannot be caught and seen by others. Are you like that? Do you flee from Fornication because of the fear of God or fear of being caught in the Act?
It is interesting to note that although they did not want to kill Jesus during the Feast, yet they killed Him during the feast. This is the sovereignty of God. God has decided from the Beginning that Christ was to be killed Exactly on the Passover day. So at that Exact time, He was killed. Acts 2:23 says, “Jesus was delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God to be Crucified and killed” All the Evil they did was in Fulfillment of the Father’s will. Remember the story of Joseph? His Brothers Sold Him as a Slave to Egypt not knowing that it was God’s will that Joseph should go to Egypt. Potiphar’s Wife lied against Him and He was sent to Prison not knowing that it was God’s will that Joseph should be in the Prison so that He could interpret Pharaoh’s servants dreams. So we see that ALL things works together for good for those that Love God(Romans 8:28). The Greatest Evil that Man ever committed was the Crucifixion of Jesus. Yet, the Greatest Good that ever Happened on Earth was the Death of Jesus. This is the God we serve!!! He is Almighty. All the Evils that people plan against us, He turns it for our good. So why should we worry and be Troubled? This is why we should be Thankful and grateful and Bless our enemies because they are only fulfilling God’s plan for our life IF we seek to Walk as Jesus walked.
And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? :This woman was Mary the Sister of Lazarus that was raised from the dead(John 12:1-3). She brought a very costly perfume costing 300 denerii which was one years wages of a Worker and poured it on Jesus Head. When we truly love the Lord, nothing will be too much, too expensive and too good to pour on Him and His service. The Love of God shed abroad in our hearts compels us to give to the Lord that which cost us so much. When we find it so difficult to give our precious time, our energy, our Money and even our ambition and life to the Lord, it is a clear indication of the extent of Love that we have for Jesus in our Heart. This Woman bought a Perfume which cost Her all her Salary for a Year just to pour it on Jesus body. What a respect She had for Jesus!!! But His Disciples could not understand it just as many do not understand it even today. They were like, “Why this Waste?” They knew Jesus had no interest in smelling nice and stuffs like that. But what they do not know is that, “Anything poured upon the Lord is never a Waste”. Any decision You take for the Lord, no matter what others around you think about you, let others say whatever they Like, You can be so sure that it is never a waste. All our Time, energy and money used in the Service of the Lord is never a waste. Let us therefore be careful never to criticize or judge those who spend more time, energy and money than we ourselves do lest lest the Lord rebukes us as He did here.
For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor: John 12:2-6 makes it clear that this statement was made by Judas Iscariot, “But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.”
But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them,“Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always.: Sometimes we can think helping the poor is the only good thing a Christian can do. And that is when we need to hear this statement of the Lord to His Disciples. This Woman did not give the Money to the Poor, instead she poured it on Jesus body which is a picture of the Church. Giving costly Life and money to bless the body of Christ is a good thing. You may think that money should have been given to the Poor, but that’s not God’s will always. There is a place of giving to the Church something that is sacrificial and costly. We will always have an opportunity to give to the Poor but the body of Christ must be cared for also.
For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”: It is interesting to note that this Woman was the Only one who had the opportunity to anoint Jesus for burial. When Jesus body was brought down from the Cross, they could not anoint His body because the Sabbath was drawing near(John 19:31). And there were two Sabbaths during that period which took 2 days. So when they finally came to the Tomb on Sunday with spices to anoint His body, they found out that it was too late for He has risen from the dead(Mark 16:1-2). There was no way to anoint His body anymore!!! But There was a Woman who did it before Jesus was Crucified. Take time and opportunities to serve God and waste Your Life on Him when you have the opportunity. If you wait for some other time, You may never have the opportunity. Those who waited for the later time to anoint the body of Jesus found out that they lost the opportunity. Now is the Time!!! If you have opportunities to do good to the body of Christ, do it now!!!
What this woman had done has been fulfilled over 2000 years ago. This incident has gone through the Bible to the whole world in thousands of Languages. And what was that, it was that, “When this woman had the opportunity, she anointed the body of Jesus with a costly perfume. Whatever we do also will be resounded at the judgment seat of Christ.
THEN one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.: The word THEN is very important here. Remember Judas was the one who said the perfume should have been sold and given to the poor because He steals from the money bag. And when Jesus said, “Why do you trouble this woman? Leave Her alone!!! What she has done will be proclaimed to generations”. So it seems to Me that Judas was offended that He was corrected publicly. Do you get offended when someone corrects you publicly? Well, Judas was like that. And as soon as He was offended, it says, “THEN” He went to the Chief priest willing to betray Jesus. He hated Jesus because He was humiliated Publicly by being corrected. It was a very small thing compare with the Rebuke Jesus gave Peter when He said, “Get behind Me Satan(Matt 16:23)”. This is a very hard Rebuke when compared with what He told Judas. But the reactions of Peter was, “Lord, to whom shall I go? You have the words of eternal Life(John 6:68), I was wrong, you were right O Lord!! Ask yourself,” what is your attitude to corrections?”. When an Older Brother or Elder in Your church corrects You about something. If you get offended, then you are walking in the footsteps of Judas and it will destroy your Life. When You are corrected by a Godly Brother say like the Psalmist, ” Let the righteous strike me; it shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me;It shall be as excellent oil;Let my head not refuse it(Psalm 141:5)” what a wonderful way to react to corrections.
Dear Friend, Never forget that God Loves You and as a Plan for You as He Loved and has a Plan for Jesus Life. Seek to walk in it and You will be Immortal until you finish that Plan. Remember there is nothing poured upon the Lord that is a Waste. Now is the Time to Pour Your Life, energy, intelligence, money and things that cost you so much on the Lord. If you postpone it, You may never have the chance again. May the Lord give us Grace to respond and Humble ourselves in time of corrections(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
