The Parable of the Talents!!!
For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look , there you have what is yours.’ “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’……. Matthew 25:14-30
In our previous studies, We have been considering a number of Parables all relating to How be can be prepared for the Second coming of the Lord. We first considered the ruler of a household who was to give people their food at the proper time. We also considered Ten Virgins which talks about our inner walk with God. And Here, He is talking about our ministry and the gifts that the Lord has given to us. Each of these Parables have got a different aspect of our Christian Life. So Jesus taught His Disciples responsibility in this Parable. Let us therefore consider what we can learn and apply to our Life.
For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. : The Man is a Picture of Christ who have gone on a Long Journey to Heaven and over 2000 years now, He has not yet return. The servants are Christians who are waiting upon the Lord to attend to Him and serve Him. But before He left for His Journey, He entrusted His goods to His servants to keep them engaged until He comes. Christ has given to us everything that pertains to life and Godliness(2 Peter 1:3). He has committed to the Church Great Truths and promises and power of the Holy Spirit. And we must always recognize that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are God’s goods and not ours. He has only entrusted it to us to be used as stewards for His glory. We are not suppose to use any gift that God gives us for our own glory. We have no right to call anything we have received as Our Own. What do you have that you did not receive from the Lord(1 Corinthians 4:7)?.The only thing worth calling our own is Our Sins!!! Those who used God’s Glory to get Honour, fame, money are committing a great Sin for they are using what belongs to God as their own.
And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.: When it comes to gifts, God gives different amounts to different people, some have more while some have less. Not all are equal. There is another similar parable in Luke 19 called the “Parable of the Minas”. In this parable, every one got the same Mina. But Here in the Parable of the Talent, different Level of gifts were given different people. To one He gave Five, to another He gave two and to the last He gave one. Now you may ask, “why has God given more to some and less to another?” well, that is His Sovereign choice. 1 Corinthians 12:5-11 makes it clear that the Holy Spirit Sovereignly chooses the gifts to give to each one and we cannot question Him. He chooses one to be an Apostle and the other to be just a Help. God decides which gifts to give us. This is the error of those who says ALL believers must speak in Tongues. They have forgotten that Tongues is a gift and God does not gives it to everyone. Many ignorant Believers are forced to utters words because the Preacher says they should speak whatever comes into their mind and they claim that is Speaking in Tongues. And in order not to disappoint the Preacher, Many play along with that gimmicks. And look at the Lives of those who claim to speak in Tongues like that, they are so carnal, they are not edified. They remain their Old self but living in delusion that they have received the gifts of Tongues. If you have really received the gifts of Tongues, it would Edify You and keep you fresh Everyday(1 Corinthians 14:4)”

Although the Bible says we should desire spiritual gifts particularly that we may prophesy(1 Corinthians 14:1). We can all seek to prophesy but that does not makes us a Prophet. Other than that, it is God that decides which gifts and quantity to give to each persons. Think of a Man like Paul, He was an Apostle, Teacher, Prophet, Evangelist, and Shepherd. He had all Five while some have got two or one.
Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. : It is a good thing to receive gift from the Lord but what is important is what we do with it. The one that got Five talents immediately traded with it. He did not waste time. It is a wonderful thing when the Holy Spirit gives us power and certain gifts and we immediately begin to us it to serve others. To earn something for the Master. He was not earning something for Himself. The Extra five talents that He got, was to be given to the Master. We must always remember that when God gives us a gift, and we get something from it, it is His. Whatever profits you get from the exercise of your gifts does not belong to You. It belongs to the Lord and The one who is Faithful will recognize that and give the Glory to God. So we are to trade for the profit of the Lord and seek the Preeminence of Christ. In the same way, The one who received Two Talents did as the one who received Five. They both traded with it and used it for the profit of their Master. But the one who received one talent, dug the ground and hid the Talent The Lord has given Him. This is a picture of a Person who used What the Lord has given Him for the things of Earth, buried in the ground. He used the gifts of God in an Earthly way. He did nothing about it. He just hid it somewhere in the Ground. There are millions of people like this whom the Lord gives a gift but they just buried it all because they are busy making Money in the world.
After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.:The Day of is coming when we who have received anything from the Lord will give an account of what we have done with it. Though the day seems long in coming, yet we can be sure that the day will come. So as one whom the Lord has given an assignment to, let us be diligent to make sure that we trade with what the Lord has given to us so that when He appears, may have confidence to approach Him and not shrink away in Shame at His coming.
Enter into the joy of your lord.’: It is interesting to note that the Reward or commendation that the Master gave to the Servant who earned Five more Talents and the One who earned Two more was Exactly the same!!! The one who earns Five must not look down on the one who earns Two for the Lord has not given them the same amount of gifts. The one whom More is given, God expect more and to the one whom less is given, less is expected. It is a question of percent!!! If you earn two from two, that is 100% and If you earn five from Five, You get 100% also. This teaches that we cannot compare the result of our services for the Lord with one another. Unfortunately, there is a lot of comparison among Christians. One church or Preacher compares Himself with others and secretly begins to think they have done so much for the Lord than others. It is foolishness to compare ourselves with others for only God knows the exact gifts that He has given to them. What the Master expects from the servant He gave one Talent to was for him to earn one more. If only He had gotten one, that would be 100% also and the Master would have giving Him the same recommendation like the others.
Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look , there you have what is yours.: The Servant who hid His talent had a wrong concept of God. He thought God was a hard, demanding Master who reaped where He has sown nothing. God is not like that!!! God is so tender, compassionate, totally understanding and forgiving. He’s not a hard Person at all. When we have a wrong concept of God, the result is that we waste our lives and the talent God has given to us. We need to have a proper Understanding of God as a Loving Father if we want to be effective in our service for Him. There are many Christians who think of God as a very hard Legalistic who is sticky about Rules. And the reason for this misunderstanding is that Many Preachers have   portrayed God like that. The way some Preachers are sticky about little rules gives people the impression that God is like that. God is not like that. He is totally unlike any Preacher you have ever seen. He is the kindest and the Most compassionate Person in the universe. Very easy to talk to. He is not bothered whether You stand or kneel when You talk to Him. He is not bothered whether Your tenses are correct or wrong. He is not a Police Man always Looking for areas where you are at fault. He is a Father who looks at His Child with pity. He cares for us just like a mother cares for her Sucking Child. But this Servant did not know that. His wrong understanding of God prevented Him form using that which the Lord gave Him. Is that possibly true in your life as well? God gives you things but You did not use them because of your wrong understanding of God.
But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. :This is exactly what the Lord will say to all those who have failed to use the Talent He has given unto them. It is Laziness and wickedness that makes people ignore the gifts the Lord has given unto them. Indeed serving the Lord is a serious thing. It requires a lot of Sacrifice. But it worth it. We need to ask ourselves whether we are using whatever the Lord has given unto us. Not only Spiritual gifts, it could be Money for the spread of His Word. To some, He gave a lot of money, to some He gave less. It could be Health, Energy, Spare time, it could be Children!!! To some He gave more, to some He gave less. Are you raising All your Children for the Earth or for God’s Kingdom? Are You using Your good Health and Spare time to do things for the Glory of God or for entertaining and the Kingdom of Darkness? Ask Yourself!!!
Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’: If you use what God gave to you faithfully, He will added add more to you but if you fail to use it, even the Little You have will be taken away from You. If the Lord show you a Truth in the Scriptures and you fail to react on it, in a little while, the Truth will be taken away from you. And the condition of such a person will be terrible.
Dear Friend,  we are answerable to God for all that He has given unto us. Make a list of All that You have received from the Lord and see if you are using it for the Lord or using it for the World and Yourself. It could be Your Health, Your Children, Your intelligence, Your energy, Time, and all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Day when we shall settle account draws near to us each day, let us therefore arise and dig up those talent and Labour lest the Master comes suddenly and cast us into outer darkness. May the Grace of God quicken us to put to us the talent given unto us in Jesus name (Amen). God bless You. Have a blessed day.
