The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” Jesus answered and said to them,“You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the multitudes heard this , they were astonished at His teaching. But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together…… Matthew 22:23-33
In our previous study, we saw the Pharisees coming to Jesus with a question to trap Him and make Him say something that would either offend the Multitude that followed Him or that would offend the Roman government that was ruling over them. And we see Jesus giving them an answer from the wisdom He had received from the Holy Spirit which shut their mouths. Here we see another group among the Jewish community called Sadducees coming with another question to ridicule the Doctrine of Resurrection.
The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.: The Sadducees is a Religious group in Israel who do not believe in the Resurrection of the Dead, neither did they believe in Spirits or the Supernatural(Acts 23:8). The Doctrines of the Pharisees are correct, but the Doctrines of the Sadducees are wrong. The Pharisees and Sadducees are always against each other but when it comes to the matter of Jesus, they are both against Him because He exposed the Hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the Error of the Sadducees. This will also be true concerning us if we walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Different religious group will set themselves against us if we expose the Hypocrisy and errors of their Church Practices and Doctrines. I once heard a Church Leader telling His Church Choir that, “You can wear trousers as a Lady to Church and on the Street but You cannot wear it during Choir Ministration”. I laughed within Me when I saw the Hypocrisy in this statement. If You believe that wearing of Trousers is wrong for a Lady, be plain about it. Why should you encourage a double Life style? When they want to Minister, they should dress properly but when they are not ministering, they can wear it. He has forgotten that even on the Road, we are ministering to God. Anything We cannot do when We are ministering is not worth doing at all. Expose this kind of Doctrine that permit Hypocrisy among Members and see how religious Leaders will be against You. This was exactly why the Pharisees and Sadducees were against Jesus. But if we keep quiet because we don’t want people to be against us or we care so much for our reputation, then we are not Servant of God but of Men. So the Sadducees came to Jesus with a Question about the Law of Moses which permits that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother(Deuteronomy 25:5).
And they told an Unimaginable Fictitious story to drive Home their points to ridicule the Doctrine of Resurrection. They said, ” Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also . Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” I have also seen this before. People framing stories that are not true just to Trap us or contradict what we believe. Life becomes More interesting when We begin to experience what we read in the Bible. Our Christian race becomes more exciting when those things that Happened to Jesus begin to Happen in our lives also. Indeed, “Anyone who says He is a Christian Must Live as Jesus Lived(1 John 2:6)”
Jesus answered and said to them,“You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.: Those who interpret God’s word in an Earthly way are Mistaken. Those who don’t believe in the Resurrection of the Dead are Mistaken. There are two things we need to understand, Firstly the Word of God, and Secondly, the Power of God through The Holy Spirit. If we don’t have the Power of God through the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the Word of God. These two go together. These are the two things we need to serve God and understand His ways. One alone will not do it. It is dangerous to have the Power of the Holy Spirit without knowing the Word of God. And it is impossible to Know the Word of God without the Power of the Holy Spirit. This are two important things we must know if we want to be balance in our Christian Life. It is like the two legs on which we stand on. The Scriptures and the Power of God. Understanding God’s word and knowing the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, we have found in Christian Churches those that have gone to two extremes. Some emphasize the Power of the Holy Spirit and some emphasize the Knowledge of the Word but Jesus emphasize Both. Those that emphasizes God’s word look down on those that emphasizes the Holy Spirit and vice versa. And both Church end up not growing. You see them 10 years later, there is no spiritual growth, they have not become more holier, they have not gotten a greater and deeper understanding of God. We need both. And the Devil will try to make us concentrate on one or the other so that we can miss out from what the Lord has for us. And if we don’t have both, then Jesus will have to say to us, “You are Mistaken!!!”
So Jesus answered their question saying, ” For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.”: At the resurrection, we are not going to be Married. We are not going to be going around with our wife and Husband. Our relationship with the Lord will be so pure and our relationship with one another will be with perfect purity as Brothers and Sisters of Jesus Christ. There will be no Sex there in Heaven to produce Children. For those who feel that the greatest Pleasure and Joy on Earth is Sex, Hear this, “There will be no SEX in Heaven!!!” Even Your Husband and wife will become Your Sister and Brother(Romans 8:29). Psalm 16:11 says, ” In Your presence is fullness of joy;At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” The presence of the Lord will swallow up every desire for Sex. And Honestly, we can even experience a bit of this fullness of Joy and pleasures here on Earth when the Holy Spirit puts the atmosphere of Heaven within our Hearts. As a Young Man growing up, I remember there was this Strong desire within Me to experience the so called pleasure and Joy I heard my friends said was in having Sex. But seeing that Jesus came as A Man tempted Exactly as I am(Hebrews 4:15) has Helped Lived in Victory over the Years. How did Jesus overcame His Sexual desires if He was tempted Like Me? I see that as at 12 years old which is the age puberty sets in, Jesus already knew so much of the Scriptures and was so concern about the Father’s business(Luke 2:46-49) and He lived in submission to His imperfect Parent and I can imagine how they must have done things that would have frustrated Him as a Child Yet He Humbled Himself and Submitted to the authority God has placed over Him(Luke 2:51-52). And Because He Humbled Himself like this, The Grace of God was upon Him even as a Child(Luke 2:40), for God gives Grace to the Humble(James 4:6). And as Long as Jesus was under Grace, No Sin was able to have Dominion over Him(Romans 6:14). So when I see a Youth who have no interest in the Father’s business, who has no word of God hidden in His Heart, who is not submissive to the authority God has placed over Him. Then I have no doubt that such person cannot overcome the Devil. For the Only way to overcome the Devil as a Young Man is by allowing the Word of God to abide in You(1 John 2:14). Do you want to overcome Sexual Sins? Get Yourself busy with the Father’s business. Fill your Heart with God’s word. And Live in Humility so that Grace will rest upon you and the Holy Spirit will fill your Heart with the presence of Heaven that swallows all other pleasures and desires. So when we get to Heaven, there will be no more marriage or Sex.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”: Jesus knew that these Sadducees did not actually believe in the Resurrection of the Dead or the Existence of Spirit, so He went on to clarify the issue and expose the errors in their beliefs. And Jesus quoted a Bible Verse for them, definitely they have all read that verse but they had no revelation on the the Implication of what they hear. When God appeared to Moses in the burning Bush long after Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were dead, He introduced Himself to Moses as “I AM the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” He did not say, “I WAS or I Have BEEN”. God use “I AM”. If Abraham had ceased from existing, then why “I AM”? Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Body died, but their Spirit did not cease to Exist. God is not the God of the Dead, but the Living. So Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are still living in Spirit in Heaven. Guess what, if I die now, my body stays here on Earth but my Spirit appears immediately before God. So I did not actually die, I just switched environment. This is why we don’t use the word “Die” for Believers. Instead We use the Word, “Sleep(1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)” Indeed, if in this Life only we have hope in Christ, we Christians are of all men the most pitiable(1 Corinthians 15:12-20)
And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together: The teachings of Jesus is something that should amaze us. There has never been a great Teacher Like Jesus. He showed them from the Scriptures that they have been reading what they never noticed concerning the Resurrection of the Dead. These should also be our experience when we Teach God’s word. People must be astonished when we show them from the Scriptures great Truths that have been hidden from the their eyes. When we show them how it is Possible to Live as Jesus Lived. When we expand to them how Grace had made it possible to live above all conscious Sins. People must be astonished when we teach from the Scriptures that Jesus was 100% God and 100% Man!!! People’s Hearts must burn when they hear us speak(Luke 24:32). But instead of the Pharisees and Sadducees repenting and saying, “Lord we surrender”, they teamed up together to form a stronger opposition group against Jesus. So it is also today. Those whose error and hypocrisy has been exposed by the True Disciples of the Lord form Alliance together to Fight the people of God. But what shall we say to this things?, “If God be for us, who can be against Us? Who shall Separate Us from the Love of Christ? Shall tribulation or persecution or sword? Yet in all these things, we are more than Conquerors through Him who Loved us(Romans 8:31-39).
Dear Friend, let us continue in the Footsteps of Jesus, let people say whatever Evil they want to say about Us. If we Honour God, He will one day Honour Us. May God give us the Spirit of Humility, Grace, Wisdom and revelation so that we can live above Sins and Shut the Mouths of all those who wants to stand against the Truths of God’s word.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
