The Parable of the Wedding Feast and the garment!!!
And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’  But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “For many are called, but few are chosen.”…… Matthew 22:1-14
In our previous Study, we considered the Parable of the wicked vinedresser which was showing the Sin of the Jewish people and the prediction of their ruin and rejection by God and the opening of the Kingdom of God for the Church. Here also, we see Jesus showing the Sin of the Jewish Nation and the opening of the Way for the Gentiles.
The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for His Son : The Kingdom of Heaven is Like a Marriage Relationship which God the Father has arranged for His Son Jesus Christ who is the Bridegroom. The Church is the Bride of Christ.
and He sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come: The First people who were invited to the Marriage of the Son were the Jews(Romans 1:16). But they were not willing to come. They rejected the invitation. They rejected John the Baptist who was the friend of the Bridegroom(John 3:29). They rejected Jesus who was the Bridegroom Himself.
Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’: This is the wonderful thing we see about God that He does not just turn a Man away before he rejected his invitation once. He tries again and again. He sent more servants to the nation of Israel. God is very Long-suffering and patient towards Sinners. He took time to mention all the preparation He has made for the Wedding feast to let them see what a great plan He had for the Wedding and the refreshing moment those who were invited will get.
But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them.: But the Jews did not consider the wedding important to come. They were more interested in their worldly affairs and business. And those that had no farm or business to do Killed the Servant of the King sent to invite them for the wedding feast. The Jewish Nation Persecuted the Apostles and the Minister of Christ sent to them.
But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city: This is exactly what happened to the Jewish Nation for them rejecting the Gospel invitation. 40 years after the Crucifixion of Jesus, the Roman Empire came over them and the Emperor sent His Army and destroyed the whole Nation of Palestine.
: This is the Fulfillment of the Great Commission of going out into all the world to invite the Gentiles to the Marriage feast since the Jews rejected it. They made themselves unworthy and the door was opened to the Gentile nations of the world.
. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.: Here we need to understand the Custom in those days, History tells us that when people come for a Wedding, because there are people who are poor and those who are Rich in the gathering. And in other not to embarrass the Poor with their dresses, there was a Wedding garment given to every guest at the door to put on while they were at this feast. And I am sure the beggars and poor that were invited must have been so delighted seeing that such garment were offered. So I felt this man thinks His own dress was good enough and did not want this wedding garment offered freely at the gate. Probably, He came with a suit and tie. And said, “I don’t need your garment, I am quite OK as I am” and they must have said, “No, the King has asked Everybody to put on this Garment!!” But He refused and He decided to come in with His own dress. This is a Word to self Righteous People who feels, “I am not as bad like these other Sinners with dirty clothes”. This Man symbolize a Man who from Childhood grew up in a God fearing family and have not committed those terrible Sins that others have committed. This is a Picture of a Man who feels His own Righteousness is good enough to bring Him into God’s presence. He feels He does not need the Righteousness of Christ for anything. All the others were Humble enough to receive wedding garment offered at the gate. The ones who had a bad dress or good dress took the wedding garment but one Man came in His own dress. This is a warning to us that we can’t come into God’s presence with our own Righteousness. No matter how Good we have been brought up, we have to Humble ourselves and take the wedding garment that God has offered to us freely. For Isaiah 64:6 says, ” But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags”. All the good things we have done, when we bring them before God, it is like rags because it could have been done with wrong motives and for our own glory. All our good works is like an Apple offered to you with an infected hand. The apple itself is good but because it is coming from an infected hands it has corrupted it. Similarly, we have a Flesh in which nothing good dwells and that corrupts our good deed. And our filthy nature cannot stand before God. This is why we need to be clothed with the Righteousness of Christ.

And when this Man was questioned by the King, He was speechless. He had no excuse. He could not say, “Nobody offered it to Me” Because it was made available at the gate. He could not say, “I don’t have money to buy it”. Because it was offered freely. So what excuse could He give? Nothing!!! The real reason was that He thought He was good enough. This is why it is difficult for those who are externally Righteous to see the need of a Saviour. They think, “I am alright as I am, why do I need a Saviour?” How can You know if you are standing based on Christ Righteousness alone or whether you have a secret trust in your own Righteousness? Well, it is very easy to know!! “Do you look down on any other Believer or feel you are more accepted by God than other Believer because of your holiness or Righteousness or because You did not commit such gross sin like others? Then You are definitely standing on your own Righteousness!!! The one who has been a Believer for 50 years and the one who came to the Lord today are accepted by God on the same basis!!! The beggars and thieves from the streets and the rich looks all the same and equal in the wedding garment. Many Christians don’t like others being made equal to them whom they feel they are senior.
Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth: This Man was not just asked to leave the Palace. He was bind hands and foot and cast into Hell. If He had not gone to the wedding, He would not have faced this judgment. Self Righteous people in the Church are in more terrible condition. People who sit down for many years in the Church and look down on others who they think are not as Holy as they are will find themselves in more terrible condition.
For many are called, but few are chosen.”: It is not that God arbitrarily chooses Few out of the Many that are called. Not at all. There is no partiality with God. But the fact remains that out of the many who are called, only few are chosen because only few respond and say “Lord, there is nothing good in My Righteousness. I want all of You!!”. It is the ones who remains Humble that are finally chosen.
Dear Friend, Let us learn from the Nation of Israel.. God rejected them because they were took the invitation to the wedding feast lightly. They were more interested in the business and far. They were more interested in their Earthly occupation and have no time for the King. If the Lord could reject those who were first invited, how much more You and I who were invited last? If the Lord did not spare the nation of Israel for their disobedience, Do you think He will spare us? There is no partiality with God!!! Let us therefore remain Humble in all our Approach to God. Let us never compare ourselves with others. Let us depend on the merit of Christ. Let us be willing to give up our own Righteousness and receive the free gifts of God. May the Lord gives us Grace to always remember that no matter how many years we have Walked with God, we are accepted into His Kingdom on the same basis with the greatest terrorist who repents. This should keep us Humble and never to despise others for the rest of our lives. May we be gripped by this Truth in Jesus name(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
