The Cursing of the Fig Tree!!!
Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.”Immediately the fig tree withered away.
And when the disciples saw it,they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?” So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”…… Matthew 21:18-22
In our previous Study, we read of Jesus cleansing the temple and driving out all those who has made the Temple of God a Den of thieves because of the business motive they had in the temple. Here we read of Jesus cursing a fig tree because there was no fruit on it. This Miracle is a Parable and those who have not been properly taught have taken this incident as a backup for raising Curses on others to their own detriment. Let us therefore open our heart that we might see the great Lesson Jesus was trying to teach us by His actions.
Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves:: Here we see something of the Humanity of Christ. This is a Truth we must never forget in our Christian life that Jesus Lived on Earth as a Man. Although He was God, yet He never used His resources as God. He was subjected to everything that affects Man. He was Like a Billionaire who left his country to live in a slum called Earth to teach those who lived in the slum how to Live within their income. He never used His credit card. He worked in the slum, lived in the slum in order to become an example for those in the slum. He was made in all things like everyone of Us(Hebrews 2:17). He was Hunger and tired exactly as we are. He had the same passion in His Flesh just like we have. He was tempted at ALL Points exactly as we are(Hebrews 4:15). This is one Truth we must never forget, that, Jesus came in the Flesh Like Me and You”. In fact, the Apostle John emphasized it so much. He was the Last Apostle among the Twelve that walked closely with Jesus to Die. And after He had watched how churches drifted away from this Truth, He said, ” For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist(2 John 1:7) As if that that was not enough, He said again,” By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world(1 John 4:2-3). Apostle John was so convinced of this Fact that He Concluded that, “Anyone who says He is a Christian must Live as Jesus Did(1 John 2:6 Living Bible), For as He is, so are we in this world(1 John 4:17)” If you desire to live a goodly life in Christ Jesus, This is the Great Mystery that God must give You revelation on. It is Called the “Mystery of Godliness, which is God Manifested in the Flesh(1 Timothy 3:16)” If You believe Jesus came in a Flesh Exactly Like Yours, You will never have an Excuse for Your Sins anymore. You will see the possibility of living in victory over Sins also. You will seek for the Power of the Holy Spirit that made it possible for Jesus to Live an overcoming Life despite the Temptations to Sin that He faced. But if you don’t believe this Truth, You will always say, “Well, Jesus is God. I am not Jesus, I cannot overcome Like He did”. And this is exactly what the Devil wants you to believe. I have been placed more emphasis on this Truth because it is hardly preached in Today’s churches that Jesus was tempted exactly like Us and came with a Flesh exactly like us with the significance to our Daily lives. Be Honest, when last did you hear such emphasis? It is a mark of a Church that has drifted away from the way of Godliness to empty talks of prosperity. So Jesus was Hunger like us and He needed to come near tree to know if there was fruit on the tree. If He had used Used His Power as God, He could have found out million miles away but He had to come near to find out.
He came to the fig tree and found nothing but leaves. Fig Leaves are pictures of Human Righteousness. The Fruit is a picture of the Fruit of the Spirit which is the Divine nature of Characters. Jesus came looking for fruits, but He saw only Fig leaves. Remember Adam and Eve covered themselves with Fig leaves when they sinned(Genesis 3:7). Fig Leaves are Human Righteousness which seeks to cover up Sin. The Leaves of empty religious activities, leaves of religious rituals. A lot of Churches today and Christians have no fruits, all they have is leaves. They still hold their Sunday meetings, they Sing, pray, read the Bible and organize a lot of programmes but no fruits for the Glory of God. No fruits of overcoming Sins, no fruits of Purity and Godliness. No fruits of godly and peaceful home with godly children been brought up at home. All they have is leaves to cover up for their emptiness. When you look them from afar, they look like Wonderful Christians, but when You get close to their private Lives and their attitude to Money, You doubt if they are even born again.
and He said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.”Immediately the fig tree withered away.: Fig Leaves are cursed by the Lord. All our Righteousness are like rags before Him. There is a curse in Human Righteousness, the Righteousness of the Law. It is God’s desire to cloth us with the Righteousness of Christ and His nature just as He clothed Adam and Eve(Genesis 3:21). This is what We need not what we manufacture by ourselves. Not the Righteousness we produced by Human efforts but that which comes from Repentance and which we receive from God.
The other picture here is the Nation of Israel. All through the old testament, the Fig tree is used to represent Israel. And Jesus came to Israel looking for fruit but what did He find? The leaves of religion. They were religious but not spiritual. Fig leaves is religiosity but fruits is Spirituality. There is a Curse on Religiosity for Jesus seeks for Spirituality. Jesus Curses that religious system and traditions which is actually driving people away from God. And He Curses that every religious activities and church today that will turn people away from God.
Why did Jesus curse the Fig tree? Was it because He angry that he could not get food on it? Certainly Not!!! Jesus was not a Slave to Food. But He wanted to teach His Disciples and us how serious it is to be an Hypocrite with only leaves of religion without Fruits of the Divine nature.
And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”: Another thing Jesus was trying to teach His Disciples through this Parable is Faith. Faith that they could do exactly what He did. He told Peter the same thing that He could walk on water and overcome the Law of gravity like He did. Faith that we can overcome Sin exactly as Jesus overcome for He is always beside us. No matter how great the Temptation or Sin is even if it is as great as a Mountain before us. This is the most important thing in Prayer. “Believe that You Receive “. Many prayers are offered to God by Christians but we may wonder if they are all offered in Faith. If very few prayers receive answer, then it means very few are offered in Faith. When God has shown us something as an hindrance to His work like a Mountain, we can speak against it if we speak in Faith, it would be removed. Not every mountains we don’t like but the ones whom the Lord wants us to clear from our Lives. May the Lord takes away an Evil unbelieving heart from us in Jesus name(Amen).
Dear Friend, throw way Your Fig leaves and seek for the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Say NO to Hypocrisy and seek after Honestly with the Lord. Remember what God seeks in your Life is fruits and not leaves. Consider Jesus and see who He pleased the Father. Remember He came exactly as You are. Believe in the Promises of God’s word. It is possible to walk as Jesus walked!!! May it never be said concerning us that “Jesus wanted to do many things for You and through You but He could not because of our unbelief(Matt 13:58)” (Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
