The Lord needs a Donkey!!!
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’” So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:“Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’Hosanna in the highest!”
And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”…. Matthew 21:1-11
Finally we are approaching the last few days of Jesus life on Earth before His death and Resurrection. It is the Last week now and He had steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem and now He was prompted by the Spirit to ride on a Donkey into Jerusalem. And there are great Spiritual lessons for us here.
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” :When Jesus wanted to go triumphantly as a King of Zion into Jerusalem before His crucifixion, He did not travel like all the other kings who use Horses. Every King and Generals in the history of the world has ridden on Houses. But Jesus used a Donkey. And Even the Donkey was a borrowed one. He was indeed poor that we might become Rich(2 Corinthians 8:9).At His birth, there was no room so he was born in a Manger (Luke 2:7), He had no house to lay His head(Matt 8:20),He had no tax money in His pocket(Matt 17:27), He had no house to eat the Last Supper with His Disciples so He borrowed a Room(Matt 26:17-18), Even at His death, He had no tomb of His own to be buried(Matt 27:59-60). Behold the Humility of Christ. He was not ashamed to recognize that He was in need. He was not ashamed to beg and ask for Help from His friends. There are times the Lord seeks to Humble us by supplying our needs through others(2 Corinthians 11:9).Let us never be ashamed to ask for help. What the Bible says is “Owe no Man anything(Romans 13:8)”.You can borrow when You are in a tight end but make sure you return it as soon as possible. Jesus did not turn the Donkey or the house to His own, even the tomb where He was buried, He returned it back.
Why did Jesus chose to ride on a Donkey and not a Horse? Can you imagine the King of Zion which is the King of the Church comes riding on a Donkey. Can you imagine how humiliating for a King to be riding on an animal which is known for dumbness and stupidity? In fact there is a Popular saying that goes thus, “As dumb as an Ass”. But yet Jesus seeks for it. Indeed, ” God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty(1 Corinthians 1:27)” When the Devil wanted to use an animal to tempt Eve, He used a Serpent because it was the cleverest and sharpest(Gen 3:1) but when Jesus was to use an animal, He picked a Donkey. Even in the old testament, the Lord used a Donkey to rebuke a Prophet (Numbers 22:28). You see the Pride of Satan and the Humility of Jesus on the matter of their choice. If you are proud of your cleverness and wisdom, you are a Candidate open for used by the Devil. But those who recognize their foolishness and dumbness when it comes to spiritual matters can be used by the Lord. God is not against the Wise and intelligent, but He is against the pride that consumes them. However clever we may be in early things, if we take the position of a Donkey before the Lord, He will use us for His Glory.
The Lord has need of those who are Like a Donkey. Those whom the world looks upon as foolish and dumb. Some of You may say you have a very low self-esteem, you may say, “Lord I am not gifted, I am just a useless ordinary person, I am simple, poor and uneducated. What can I do in the Church?” Hear this, Even if You are the dumbest on Earth, “The Lord has need of You”. Human beings may not need you except to treat You like a piece of garbage, but “The Lord has need of You”. Oh how I wish we will all hear this!!! How I wish those who are considered unintelligent, foolish, and dull will hear the Lord say to them, “I need You, I want to ride on You in the City. You are the one I am seeking for!!!”
But there are three conditions that this Donkey must meet before It can be used by the Lord. It must be Loosed, no man must have sat upon it(Luke 19:30) and it must be brought to Jesus. Even though you have taken your place as a Donkey, even though People consider You as Foolish, dumb and good for nothing idiot, that does not automatically make you useful to the Lord. Look around You and see how many dull and foolish people are around you who are useless for the society and Yet useless for God because they were not willing to fulfill these conditions. Before the Lord can Use You, You must be willing to be Loosed from every Sin that has tied you down. You must be willing to give up those dirty habits that has held you in bondage for Years. Again and again the Lord has sent His Disciples with authority to You to loose You from those sinful habits but You are unwilling to be Loosed. If only You have responded to the words they preached to you, those Sins would have let You go immediately because the Lord has need of You. Secondly, no man must sit on this Donkey. Those who will be ridden by the Lord must be yoked only to the Lord. They must be freed from every human attachments that would hinder them from following the Lord. They must be willing to Hate Father, Mother, brothers, Sisters, Wife, Husband and Children in order to follow the Lord(Luke 14:26). Lastly, the Donkey must be brought to Jesus. Even if you claim to have been Loosed from All known Sins and You are free from Human attachments, unless You are brought to Jesus, You still remain useless. It is when We are brought to Jesus that He can use us. This is why it is very important to listen to preachers that Points us to Jesus and not to Himself. We must always be sensitive when we listen to a preacher to always ask, “Is this Preacher drawing me to Jesus or to Himself? Is He pointing Earthly things to Me or Heavenly things?” If we subject all we hear to this test, we will never be deceived.
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey”: Everything Jesus did was to fulfill what the Scriptures has written about Him. The Father had a plan for the Life of Jesus. And Jesus was willing to walk in those plans. There is no partiality with God. If He had a Plan for Jesus, He has a Plan for our own lives too. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.(Ephesians 2:10).
Here is an Exhortation given to us who are the Children of Zion to Behold and Look Carefully at Jesus who is our King coming on a Donkey. Not proud and extravagant like Earthly King but gentle and Meek. A servant of the Lord must always seek to have a Low profile before Men. We must not seek the High position and seek to be like Others riding on horses. There are some Preachers who out of their covetous Heart dare to say, “If Jesus was Living on Earth today, He would be using the latest and best Car” but My question to them is, “Were there no Horses during His time? Then why did He chose a Donkey?” Leaders of the Church should Behold and Look carefully at Jesus Life to Learn from Him. We need to always have this Picture before Us always seeing, “Jesus riding on a Donkey”
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. : Those who have obeyed the Commandments of God will discover they what He said is exactly as it is. They found the Donkey exactly where He says it is. Notice the Love the Disciples had for their Master. They took off their clothes and Laid it on the Donkey that Jesus may sit on it more comfortably. We as Disciples of the Lord must be willing to give up our Clothes in Service to the Lord. Our properties must not be so dear to us that we find it difficult to give it up when the Lord is in need of it. Remember He was stripped off His Clothes and hanged on the cross with pants alone for Our Sins. Is getting our Clothes dirty in Sweeping the Church Meeting hall too much for us to do? We must be willing to Labour on those who are led to Christ through Us until Christ is Formed and comfortable to sit on them(Galatians 4:19).
Just imagine the Donkey starts having High thought about itself. It would have been foolishness for the Donkey to say, “Wow, See how Great I am that all these people are praising Me and throwing their garments on the floor for Me. I must be very important o”. Unfortunately, this is how many Christians and Christian leaders behaves when other people give them Honour for their service. It is folly to think we are someone great because of what the Lord does through Us. Let us remember that we carry Jesus. It is Jesus that people Honour not us. Maybe the Lord has been pleased to ride on You like He rode on this Donkey, gave you gifts to serve Him but don’t let it enter Your Head. Even if people are blessed by our ministry, Let us never forget that we are Donkeys who is carrying Jesus. The moment Jesus steps down from the Donkey, Everyone forgets about it. So also, the moment we stop following the Lord, we become History. Our Ministry becomes Historical. There is no freshness and newness. All we have to say is the Old experiences with the Lord. No freshness in our lives and devotions. No new revelation on Jesus. Even the Old ones we use to have is already breeding worms and no freshness in it. Let us therefore remain Humble if we will want the Lord to Remain seated on us till the end of our lives.
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:“Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’Hosanna in the highest!”: Hosanna is an Hebrew word which means “Save Us Now”. So this Multitude were crying as they Followed the Lord, “Save us now, Son of David”. But their understanding of Salvation was wrong. Their understanding was to be saved from the Roman Rulers who were ruling Israel. They were not asking to be Saved from Sins which was the Main reason why Jesus came(Matt 1:21). A lot of people sing Hosanna now without understanding what it means. Don’t ever sing or say something to God that You don’t mean. Do you go to your Daddy to say what You don’t mean? Don’t ever say meaningless and words You don’t know the meaning before God. That is foolishness. Even if We say, “Alleluia”, we should know what it means. It means, “Praise the Lord”. When we say “Amen”, it means “It shall be so”. There is nothing wrong in using these words, but know what You are saying. Don’t just sing a meaningless songs to God like many Christians do. Because for them, it is the Tune that moves them, not the words. Don’t be careless. Next time You say, “Hosanna”, ask Yourself if truly You want the Lord to save You from every sinful habits or it is just the tune of the Song that You love. Blessed are those who do anything in the name of the Lord.
And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”.: Finally, He arrived at Jerusalem. And the whole city took notice of it. So in admiration, some in laughter at the scenario of Jesus on a Donkey. While others came with a question saying, “Who is this?”. Indeed, Jesus made Himself of no reputation. He came to His but they knew Him not. Jesus never sought for popularity among the council or religious leaders. But yet even in their answer of who Jesus is, they only took his as a Teacher and not their Lord.
Dear Friend, the Lord is still seeking after Donkeys even today. Will He find You? “Are you willing to be Loosed from Every Sin that tied You down? Are you willing to be freed from every Human attachments? Come to the Lord today and say,” Here I am oh Lord, Seat upon Me and Let people glorify You in My Life”. May God give us Grace to remain Humble until the end in Jesus name(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
