The Healing of the blind Men at Jericho!!!
And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him….. Matthew 20:24-34
In our Previous Study, we read of James and John bringing their Mother to Jesus begging for a seat at the right hand and left hand of Jesus when He sets up His Kingdom. We noted that this seat was prepared by the Father for People who are able to drink the Cup of Humility. For this was exactly how Jesus got the greatest seat in Heaven. And we saw the angry reaction of the other Disciples towards James and John, not because they are any way better. But rather because they were also hoping to get the Seat. Here we see Jesus rebuking the other ten Disciples and The Healing of the two blind men at Jericho.
And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you;: It is interesting to see that Jesus did not rebuke James and John, He just told them how they could sit on the right hand and left Hand if the Father found that they were faithful in Humility. But the Other ten, Jesus called and rebuke for being upset with James and John. When we think of Getting Honour or position of authority, we are just like the heathen and unbelievers who seek to Lord it over others and have authority over others. We must have a completely different attitude both in time and in eternity. Shame on us if we are like the unbelievers. The Bible forbids every act of Lording it over the Faith of others. We are be examples to those that the Lord has given to us. 1 Peter 5:3 says, “Elders should not be Lord over those entrusted to them but to be an example to the flock”. Paul was very careful not to use the authority that the Lord has given unto Him to have Dominion over the Faith of others(2 Corinthians 1:24). We are to show others the Way to please the Lord but we must give them freedom to decide.
But whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”: Greatness in the Kingdom of God is to be a Servant. Greatness is to have the attitude of a Slave. Have you ever seen how a servant or a Slave behaves in the House? He is not seeking any reputation. He is not seeking to show off His best clothes in the house. He does his work not expecting those whom He serves to say thank You. A Slave does not parade Himself asking what the visitors thought about Him. He does His works and withdraw back into His quarters. Oh how I wish we will be gripped by this in the Church, to serve our Brothers and Sisters without any hope of Reward or Honour. I perceive Jesus was also saying to them, “I am not just preaching this to You, Look at my example. I don’t come here on Earth to have a position. I gave up the one I have in Heaven so that I can serve those on Earth” This is the Spirit we must have. It is a Shameful thing to say we are following a Master who gave up the greatest position in the Universe of being equal with the Father in eternity and became a Man to serve others and then died as a Criminal, if we ourselves are seeking for Honour here on Earth or in Heaven. May the Lord Open our eyes to see how Jesus Humbled Himself from Birth to death and give us Grace to Humble ourselves Like He Did in serving others(Amen).
Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”: It is interesting to see that these two blind men has spiritual sight than most of the the people in Israel who have their eyes opened. This Blind men knew that this was the Son of David prophesied in the Old testament they knew this was the Messiah and that’s why they called Him, “Son of David”. What was difficult for the Religious leaders of those days to acknowledge, this blind men got Revelation in their Spirit. They called Him “Lord”. Physical handicap like blindness and deafness is not an hindrance to Spiritual revelation. The Lord has chosen the weak, small and despise to be rich in Faith(James 2:5, 1 Corinthians 1:26-28). And very often, the people who are handicap, God has given them Light on eternal truths. This Blind men cried out, “Have mercy on us, O Lord”. It is those who are aware of their own need that cry out to God. Those who are self sufficient don’t pray. Those who see their inability and helplessness cry to the Lord in prayer for Help. Notice that they cried out, “Have mercy on US” and not “Have Mercy on ME”. We must always pray for the need of others also. We must be our brothers keeper. We must remember others who are in need also in our prayer. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to say, “Give US our Daily bread, forgive US our Sins(Matt 6:11-13)”. It is as we pray for others that the Lord meet our own needs also. Job 42:10 says, “And the Lord restored Job losses when He prayed for his friends” Let us therefore make it our passion to always make our need made known to the Lord and put others in prayer.
Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!: At times, those who are in great need meet with discouragement from those who claim to follow the Lord. The Multitude who should have encouraged these blind Men rebuked them for crying to the Lord. If You will not pray along or encourage those who are crying out to the Lord, then shut up and don’t be a source of Discouragement to others. Shame on those who claim to follow the Lord and Yet discourage others who are trying to follow the Lord also. But this Blind men Cried out all the more!!! Wonderful!! They would not give up despite the discouragement they met with in seeking the Lord. When others try to stop us, that is the time to cry out to the Lord the More. Don’t give up when others says it is of no use praying. Indeed, Men ought to always pray and not lose heart(Luke 18:1). Don’t lose heart when Your Family and Friends tries stopping you from seeking after the Lord. That is the Best time to cry out all the more, saying “Have Mercy on Me O Lord!!!”
Jesus stood still and called them,: The Lord always stop when there are sincere people crying out to Him. Although He was on His way to Jerusalem, Yet He would stop to meet the needs of sincere people calling out to Him. Even if we meet with discouragement from others, we can be sure that the Lord is more compassionate than all who followed Him. The Lord stood still and call unto those who cry unto Him. He calls them closer to be in a closer relationship with Him. In all our cry to the Lord, we must always hear the Lord calling us to draw nearer to Him. If they had given up the first time they prayed without getting an answer, they would never have gotten an answer. If they had given up or listened to the advise of the Multitude, they would have missed out all their lives what the Lord wanted to do for them. It is possible some of us have missed out what God wanted to do for us because we listened to other people. Go to God’s word and you will see what the Lord has for You. If You listen to others, You will miss out what could have been a life transforming experience for you.
And Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”: This teaches us another thing about prayer. When we come to the Lord in prayer, we must be Specific. “Lord have mercy on Me” is such a general prayer Just like “Lord bless Me”. The Lord expects us to be specific. What do you want me to do for You? What is the Specific Mercy that you need? What is the Specific Blessing that You need? What is the Exact thing You want the Lord to do for You? Be specific with Your Problem!!! Philippians 4:6 says we should make our specific Supplications made known to God. Is it that the Lord did not know what they need? It is not that the Lord did not know, but He wants them to express their request. Our Heaven Father knows what we need before we ask Him yet He wants us to pray(Matt 6:8). This is one of the mysteries of Prayer. God knows what we need but we would not get it unless we make specific requests for it. You have not because You ask note(“James 4:2). Ask, that your Joy may be full. We have to ask specifically, “Lord give Me this” Though the Lord gives us some things without our asking Him. For example, our Daily bread. But when it comes to Spiritual things, it is almost impossible to receive anything without asking for it.
They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. : If the blind Men had asked for Money, He would have given it to them. If they have asked for clothes, He would have gotten some for them. But they were wiser than the Christians of Today. They acknowledge their need. They said, “Lord we are blind!!! We want our eyes”. There are many believers today who are totally blind to the purpose of God for their Lives and the goal of the Christian race but they kept asking for Money from the Lord. They seems not to know what to really ask for. Acknowledge Your Failures before the Lord. Be specific!!! Say to Jesus, “Lord I am a Lustful Man, I can’t stop myself from Lusting. Lord, I speak in Tongues in Church but I can’t control my tongue at Home. My problem is not with other Tongues, my problem is with my mother tongue. Lord, I am a Slave to anger” What you ask is what you got. It will be done to you according to your faith.
And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.: When you get what you want from the Lord, do what the Blind Men did. They Followed Him!!! They discovered the reason why God gave them sight. It was so that they can see Jesus and follow Him. They had such wisdom. They saw the reason for the sight. No wonder they were healed immediately. The reason why God bless us in any way is so that we can follow Jesus a little closer than we ever did before. We ask at times and don’t receive because we ask with wrong motives(James 4:3). Are you sick and asking the Lord to heal You? Good, but you need to ask yourself another question. When are you asking the Lord to heal you? Why do you need health? Is it so that you can live more for the Glory of God or to live more for the world and make more money? This is a good question to ask ourselves when we pray. And if it is to follow the Lord, we can be sure that the Lord will answer us.
Dear Friend, seek to have the Spirit and attitude of a Servant and a Slave to God’s people. For those of such Spirit are the greatest in God’s Kingdom. Cry out to the Lord more and More in times of discouragement. Be specific about your matter. Be honest with the Lord. And whenever You receive from the Lord, remember it is so that you can follow Him. May the Lord give us Grace to cry out and Follow in His Footsteps(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
