Marriage, Divorce and Celibacy!!!
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.
The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”…….. Matthew 19:1-12
In our previous Study, we saw the danger of having an unforgiving attitude towards our fellow men and we concluded that if there is one single person we have not forgiven no matter how great the crime they committed against us is, then God also will not forgive Us our sins. And if God did not forgive our Sins, No Matter how faithful we have been in other areas, we will NEVER be allowed into Heaven. Here, we see Jesus teaching on Marriage, Divorce and Celibacy(the act of staying away from Marriage).
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.: Again and again, we have seen that in the Healing Ministry of Jesus, we find a number of occasions where He healed everyone. In fact, we do not read of a Single case of Jesus laying His hands on someone and the person was not healed. This was an attestation that He was the Messiah(Acts 2:22). So Don’t be surprised if today, you pray for someone and He is not healed. The Sign that is shown today that Jesus is the Messiah is the sign of His Death and Resurrection. I am not saying Jesus does not Heal like He did when He came to Earth. He still heals!!! He is the same Yesterday, today and Forever. But for reasons best known to Him, there are so many Children of God on Earth that is has not been healed of their Physical Sickness. Jesus did not Heal Paul of His thorn in the Flesh, He did not cure Timothy of His stomach problems. Was it because they Lack Faith? Not at all. But God in His own wisdom has reasons for it. But one thing I can guarantee You is that, “If You are a Faithful Child of God like Paul and Jesus has refused to give You Healing from Your Physical Sickness, He will always give You Grace!!! It is either You get Healing or Grace. And whatever Sickness the Lord will permit will never hinder You from completing the purpose of God for your Life. Paul at the end of his life, despite the Thorn in the Flesh that buffet His Body, He was able to say, ” I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith(2 Timothy 4:7)” How could a Man who had a Thorn in the Flesh sent by Satan say this at the end of His Life? Grace!!! This is what Grace can do. So don’t be confused on this Matter of Healing today. Jesus heals, but if He has not healed You for reasons best known to Him, He will also make Grace available to You. So don’t be offended with Him. For His Ways are not our ways.
The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” : The Pharisees are always looking for loopholes in the Laws. They are always looking for ways to escape the instructions of the Law. They are always thinking in terms of, “What is the Minimum I have to do to please this hard demanding God. What is the the minimum of this World that I can give up and still remain a Christian?” But those who have entered the New Covenant are always thinking about, “What is the Maximum I can do to glorify God in this one Earthly Life that I have” Let us therefore check our hearts to see the kind of attitude we have in our service for the Lord if we are of the Maximum Or Minimum Christian. The Pharisees came testing Him. They did not come because they were willing to know the truth, they did not come because they were willing to be instructed by Him. They came because they wanted to test Him. There are many people who come and ask us questions about spiritual things just to find fault in whatever we say. They are the Pharisees of today. The Generation of Vipers are still alive even today. They ignore all the good things you say and write and concentrate on areas where you made mistakes. The Pharisees knew that Jesus would be against Divorce, yet they asked Him questions to test Him.
And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” : Jesus went back to the Beginning before Sin entered into the world. When we have questions or doubt about anything all we have to do is to look back at God’s original plan at the beginning. What was God’s original plan for Adam? Did God made many women so that if Adam get fed up with Eve, He can divorce her and marry another one? No!!! That is not what God planned in the beginning. That is why God made one Man and woman from the Beginning. There is no question of being unhappy with the one God gave You. God gave one woman to Adam and say, “This is your wife” She may have weaknesses but remember You have weaknesses also.
They are no longer two but one. Before they got married, they were two separate individuals but once they become Union in marriage, they become one Flesh. Therefore what God has joined together in Marriage, Let no one separate. Any Man or woman who comes between a Husband and Wife relationship is an agent of the Devil. If Father, Mother, Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, even Pastors comes between husband and wife, then they are agents of the Devil. They are seeking to destroy the Plan of God from the Beginning. The job of any true Servant of God is to bring the Husband and wife closer to each other and not to separate them. Supposing the Husband is an idolater and the wife is a true Believer, what shall you say? Separate from Him? Certainty not!!! You don’t have to bow down to idols like He does because there is an authority above Him which is God but You must submit to Him as Your Husband in areas that does not go against God’s word.
Marriage is something instituted by God for Human race. Whoever marries, whether believers or unbelievers. It is an institution recognized by God. Wherever they are married, whether in the temple, court, mosque anywhere, they are you joined by God. It is not only Christians marriages that are accepted and recognized by God. So what God has joined together in marriage, whether believers or unbelievers, let no one separate!!!
They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” :Here we see the wrong attitudes of the Pharisees towards the law. When you read the actual passage they were referring to, what Moses said was, ” When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, ……… (Deuteronomy 24:1-4)” Moses was saying, “If a Man Divorce, this is what He should do”. He was not giving them a Commandment to go ahead and Divorce. Haven’t they read, Malachi 2:16, where God says, He hates divorce? This is how corrupt the Flesh of Man is that we read into the Scriptures what will justify our actions. And God allows those who do not love the Truth to be deceived like this(2 Thessalonians 2:10-11). This is a great warning to us that when we read the Scriptures, if our heart desire is to justify our self, we will read into it on any subject on any matter that which suits our position. This is why we need to fear when we come to God’s word. We need to let God’s word judge us rather than make God’s word fit our circumstances and actions which may be worldly and sinful.
He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.: Jesus corrected the notion they had that Moses commanded it. He said to them the it was permitted. There is something called the permissive will of God and the Prefect will of God. Under the Old Covenant, many things were permitted which were not in God’s perfect will. Divorce is one of those things that was permitted. Why was it permitted? It was because of the hardness of people’s heart in the old testament. No one could have a soft heart until Jesus came and the Holy Spirit was given. God wrote His Laws upon Rocks in the old Covenant as if he was telling humans , ” I cannot write on Your Heart, the rocks is softer than Your Heart”. But the New Covenant promise is that God will take away the hearts of Stone and write His laws on our Hearts(Ezekiel 36:26,Hebrews 8:10). It is when the Holy Spirit comes within us that our hearts becomes soft. So God’s standard was lower in the old testament because the Holy Spirit was not yet given. Divorce in the old testament was permitted but in the New testament, it is forbidden.
And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”: (Compare with #Day 035- Divorce). The only case where divorce is permitted in the New testament is if a wife or husband Commits Sexual immorality. If any partner has given her body to another person, then He or she has broken the Covenant of one Flesh with his or her Partner. Jesus permits Divorce only in this case. And Even if the party divorce based on this, none of them is permitted to Remarry as long as both parties are still alive. And anyone who marries someone who has been Divorced while his or her other partner is still alive Commits Adultery also(Read #Day 035 – Divorce for more Exposition on these).
His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” : I am sure the Disciples must have seen a lot seen many unhappy marriages and they were like, “Boy, it is tough to get married if you can never get rid of her”
But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”: Jesus gave a very practical answer to what His Disciples said about staying unmarried. The state of staying single for Life is not applicable for Everyone. It is only possible to those whom such gifts or Grace has been given to. Apostle Paul was one of those people who felt He had the Grace to remain single without burning with passion. If a Man or woman is burning with Sexual desires that He or She cannot control, then that is an indication that He or She has not been called to a single life(1 Corinthians 7:9). It means that the gift and Grace of remaining single has not been given to such a person. So if you are burning with Sexual desires within, that is perfectly normal. It is an indication that You should seek for marriage in your Life. It is a doctrine of Demon to forbid those who have not been given such gifts or Grace from getting Married(2 Timothy 4:1-3). There is nothing Sinful in getting Married. Marriage is honorable among all(Hebrews 13:4).God Himself said, “It is not good that a Man should be alone(Genesis 2:18).” Marriage does not affect our walk with the Lord. The first man that Walked with God outside Paradise was Enoch, and He was a Man that has Sons and Daughters(Genesis 5:21).Only those who can accept a Single Life should accept it. Only those who have received this Grace and gift from God.
Dear Friend, God Hate Divorce. It is totally forbidden in the New testament except for Sexual immorality among one partner. And Even at such case, remarriage is not allowed until one of the partner dies. The words of Jesus is very clear on this matter. Don’t harden your Heart and interpret Scriptures to justify the corrupt in your heart. If You are burning with Passion, it is an indication that God has called you to be married. But if you feel You have the Grace to remain Single, praise the Lord!!! Use that opportunity to travel around to spread the Gospel. May the give us Grace to be faithful to our Marriage partner till death part us(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
