The Feeding of the Four Thousand!!!
Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?” Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?”And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.” So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left. Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala…… Matthew 15:29-39
In our previous Study, we read of how Jesus walked a whole day to the region of Tyre and Sidon Just to meet a Cananite woman who was in need. And we saw How Jesus taught Us Persistence, Humility and Faith by His attitude to this Woman. Here, we read of Jesus Healing and Feeding the Multitudes.
Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there: Jesus departed from Tyre and Sidon immediately after He casted the Demon out of the Cananite woman’s Daughter. He took such a Journey just to deliver one Soul. How precious the Soul of one person in the eyes of the Lord. And having returned to Galilee, He sat down on the Mountain. Behold the Humility of Christ. One who had done such a Wonderful Miracle, He should have demanded for a Throne. But He choose to sit on a Mountain!!!Let us therefore learn from Jesus to remain Simple No matter how great the Lord has used us to serve others. He went up and sat down on the Mountain so that people might see Him. Jesus was very approachable. He had no body guards to stop people from coming close to Him. He sat openly that others might see Him and come to Him. Even Nicodemus could come to Him at the Middle of the night(John 3:2). Let us learn to be accessible to people who needs us just like Jesus is.
Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.: Having Made Himself available, Great Multitudes came to Him with their problems. What a terrible thing the Devil has done!!! He has made people Lame who should be walking in Victory over Sin, He has made People Blind from seeing the Glory of the Lord, He has made people Silent from Singing Praise to the Lord!!! How terrible the Devil has corrupted Man with Sin. But Glory to God we have Jesus who has come to destroy the Works of the Devil. All we need to do is lay All our problems down at His feet. Even when we can’t find expression to describe how terrible the things the Devil has made us do. We are to lay before Him as we seek His Mercy. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we might receive Mercy from the Lord!!For He who comes to Him, He will never cast away. And Jesus Healed them All. There has never been a Man who has done such Great Miracles and Healing as Jesus did. Even Paul as Great as He was, could not heal Timothy of His frequent ordinary Stomach infirmities, Am sure Paul must have prayed several times for Him yet, there was no healing, so he suggested wine(1 Timothy 5:23).Even we read that Paul had a Thorn in the Flesh, a messenger of Satan troubling His body. And He prayed to God for deliverance, three times!!! Yet the Lord did not Heal Him. Instead the Lord said, “My Grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). Jesus still heals people today but we must recognize that the Miracles Jesus did while He was on Earth was an attestation that He was the Messiah(Acts 2:22). So We are in the days where He Chooses to Do Miracles when He wills for reasons best known to Him. There are lots of Preachers going around having Miracle Healing Camps saying, “Jesus will Heal all Sickness” and after the whole camp meetings, out of the Multitude that came, less than 1% got healing. And the others becomes confused. But one thing I can guarantee You is that If You come to the Lord for Healing and He refuses to Heal You for reasons known to Him, He will always give you Grace. Paul never got Healing but He got Grace!!! And at the End of His Life, even with the Thorn in the Flesh, He was able to say, “I Have fought the Good fight of Faith, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith(2 Timothy 4:7). So let us be confident of this: That if the Lord will not Heal us, He will give us Grace. And Guess what, if I were to choose between Physical Healing and Grace, I will go for Grace. I can get physical Healing from the Lord and still end in Hell. Am Sure some of the people that shouted, “Crucify Him!! Away with Him!!!” were those that were once fed or healed by the Lord. But if the Lord gives Me Grace, Sin can never have Dominion over Me(Romans 6:14). Oh how I wish we will see how serious and far more Dangerous Sin is than Sickness!!! Sickness has never taken anyone to Hell but Anger has done that!!! Be wise!!!
Jesus Ministry was done in such a Way that He directed the Glory to God. This is so different from the Healing Ministry of Many people today who directed the attention of People to themselves. Open their Magazines and you will find it full of pictures of themselves. The attention is drawn to the Man. Jesus drew the attention of People away from Him because He came as a Man and directed it to God. This is something we must ask ourselves that when people comes in contact with our ministry, do they Glorify us or Glorify God. Are we directing the attention of people towards ourselves or towards the Lord?
Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”: Here we see Jesus communicating the Compassion He had on the People to His Disciples. Not because He needed an Advice but to arouse their compassion also. Naturally, we are hard on people, so any compassion we have must be because God put it into our Heart. Any acts of Compassion we show towards people was as a result of God communicating it into our Heart. So why did the Lord had compassion on these Multitude? It was because they had continued with Him for three days without having nothing to Eat. The Lord takes notice of how long we have continued with Him. You thinks 2 hours Bible Study is too much? Well, these Multitude spent three days with Him without food yet they never complained!!! They left their Jobs and Comfortable bed just to hear the awesome teachings of the Lord. They took the Words of Christ more important than their necessary food. The Lord takes notice of the sacrifice we make and the pain we go through to maintain close relationship with Him and He looks at us with Compassion as we wait on Him. And as many who have waited upon the Lord can be sure that He will not send them away Hungry. As many who have tarried in His presence, He will always met their needs. The Lord is not only interested in our spiritual need but also in our physical needs. Let us therefore continue with Him for He cares about Us. He will meet our own necessary physical need lest we become discouraged on this Journey in Life.
Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”: Can You imagine?!!!! Just a little while ago, He had fed over Five thousand men besides Women and children in a Miraculous Way(Matt 14)and they have forgotten so quickly. It is amazing how quickly we forget the Miracles God does for us. How easy it is in the time of trials and difficulties to forget All the Miracles that God has done for us in previous difficult situations. It is almost like if He has never done anything for Us. But we can be sure that the one who has helped us in previous difficulties will help us now too.
Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”: The Lord will always use what we have no matter how little it is to bless the Multitude. He could have created bread out of nothing but He would always want to do things in partnership with Man. This is always God’s method of doing things.
So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.: Notice again the Same principle as that of the feeding of the five thousand. He commanded them to sit on the Ground. Those who will receive anything from the Lord must learn to go down in Humility. Sit on the Ground!!! Jesus will always give thanks even for the Little He had received. Let us therefore appreciate the Little we have. He taught us to pray before eating. He did not ask for volunteers!!! He made use of Disciples in distributing the meal. And He made abundance that His Disciples were not left out at the end of their service(Read #Day 089- Feeding of the Five Thousand, to get more Exposition on this Distribution Process).
Notice, whatever We give to God, He blesses and breaks!!! We can see this as a Picture of us giving ourselves to God to use us to bless the Multitude. He will bless us and then breaks us before He use us. This is a very fundamental principle in Christian service. Do you want God to use You? Then you have to be blessed first with the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit but that is not enough!!! You must be broken by different difficult situations that God sent across Your Path. If you are not, then You can not be effective in your service for the Lord.
And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala: And He sent them away that He may spent some time alone in prayer for this is His usual Habits whenever He did a tremendous Miracle(Matt 14:23,Luke 5:15-16). He sent them away, though He had fed them twice, they must not expect Miracles to be their daily food. For if anyone will not work, neither shall He eat(2 Thessalonians 3:10).
Dear Friend, Jesus still heals today, but don’t be offended at Him if He has not healed for reasons best known to Him. He will always give You Grace as He gave Paul. Remember that the feeding of the Multitude was a miracle done twice to emphasize to His Disciples that: however great the need, maybe 5000 or 4000 or 500,000. Whatever the need!!! If you will give Him ALL that You have, even if it is very little, He can use it to bless the Multitude. May the Lord give us Grace to Give All to the Lord to bless and break.(Amen). God bless You. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
