John the Baptist beheaded!!!
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus……. Matthew 14:1-12
Here we see a Lot of things about the character of Herod and His behaviours and it is because of the way He conducted Himself that later when He finally met with Jesus during Christ Trials, and Herod asked Jesus many questions, Yet Jesus refused to speak with Him(Luke 23:8-9). Jesus answered the High Priest, He answered Pilate, but He never answered Herod one word. And the reason lies in Spiritual principles that we need to Understand. It is possible for a person to have heard the Truth for so long that He or she can cross a line where God does not speak to Him or Her anymore. He has gone beyond the possibility of Repentance. This is partly a Sin of the Holy Spirit which does not have forgiveness(Matt 12:22). So because Herod has crossed the Line of Repentance, there was no need for Jesus to do anything or speak a word to Him. So here we read the reason for it. Let us therefore open our hearts so that we may not end Like Herod.
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.: It is amazing to see that Jesus was mistakenly for another Man. John the Baptist must have been a very godly Man for a godless man like Herod to remember John the Baptist when He heard about Jesus. This is a great challenge to us that we can live in such a Christ-like way that Unbelievers Like Herod see and heard about us and remember Jesus. What made Herod had these thoughts about Jesus? Herod conscience Troubled him when He heard about Jesus because He had done something wrong in killing John the Baptist. So when He heard about Jesus, he felt that “This must be John the Baptist risen from the dead”. It is amazing how the things that we do wrong begins to affects us in our conscience and troubles us so that anything that happens we say “This must have happened because of the wrong I did at a particular time” This is a sign of a conscience that is not right before God and Man. When you feel that something has happened because of something else that you have done, then You are like Herod. For example, I know a student who failed an Exam and when asked Why He failed, He said, “I failed because few days to the Exam, I committed a Sin” This was exactly how it was with Herod concerning John the Baptist. He was never at Rest in His conscience. And it is a very serious thing to go against our conscience. Let us therefore strive to keep our conscience clear at all times so that we don’t interpret everything that happens to us as an effect of our sins.
For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”: Here comes the reason why Herod had a bad conscience. Herod married His Brother’s wife and John the Baptist who was fearless of anybody Rebuke Him for His Sin. John told Him straight in the Face, “It is not lawful for You to Have Her!!!” And am sure Herod Himself was convinced of that because ” Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly(Mark 6:20). It is amazing that this godless king was afraid of Herod because He was a Great Righteous and Holy Man. Many people are afraid of Herod, but Herod Himself was afraid of John the Baptist. There is a tremendous power in Righteousness and Holiness that it puts fear even into Kings. So Herod kept John Safe. Even Herod enjoyed Listening to John the Baptist preaching so obviously, Herod listened to John frequently but He never obeyed. The fact that a person likes listening to a God fearing, bold and fiery Preacher like John the Baptist does not necessarily mean that He is spiritual. Many people like listening to fiery Preacher but they are just like Herod who never repented. But because Herod was so influenced by His new wife, Herodias (Philips’ wife), she keeps asking Herod to kill John the Baptist(Mark 6:19). And Herod meekly submitted to His wife like many foolish husband do when their wife prompt them to do something wrong. But yet, He could not kill John the Baptist because He Feared the Multitude!!! He was afraid of the opinion of Men. He was afraid of what people might say because they knew John as a Prophet. He was influenced by the opinion of His wife, He was influenced by the opinion of people. He was more interesting in his own Honour, reputation and position before the people that He was willing to sacrifice the peace in His conscience. No wonder Jesus never spoke one word when He stood be Herod later. When people are like that and are willing to sacrifice their conscience for the sake of their Honour and position, we can be very sure that God will never speak to such person.
But at the time of His Birthday, He was so happy with the dancing of the Herodias daughter that He promised Her whatever she asked for and She was prompted by her mother to ask for the head of John the Baptist. Never make a promise when you are over excited. Set your emotions aside first. There are many who have made promises and later rejected they made such. There are many marriages based on useless promises instead of the word of God. I repeat, don’t make promises when excited.
And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.: notice that Herod did not want to kill John the Baptist but He was concerned about others opinion about Him. He was concerned about His reputation before His dinner guest. He was concern about the opinion of Men and because of these, He was willing again to sacrifice His conscience and he had John beheaded. This passage of Scripture is a tremendous warning to us to be careful about going against the still small voice of conscience. It is possible to go against ones conscience until one finally crosses the line and God refuse to speak with such a person anymore. If you have heard the Truth so often and hardened your Heart, there is a possibility that a time will come when God stops speaking. I beg You, Today if you hear His voice, do not hardened Your Heart. Let us therefore be watchful lest we become like Herod.
Dear Friend, The way of Sin is downward. The more you sin, the more you will find yourself Sinning. Seek to be independent of people’s opinion about You. If you fear God, You don’t need to fear anyone else. Maintain a perfect conscience always. May the Lord give us Grace to keep ourselves pure in Jesus name.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
