The Rejection at Nazareth!!!
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. . When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His Sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief…….. Matthew 13:53-58
In our previous studies, We have been Looking at the Parables of Jesus and its significance as it relates to our Lives. It is important to note that after the Parables, Jesus told His Disciples the necessity of becoming a Disciple. Understanding the Parables only makes us Scribes, but obedience to what the Parables teach makes us Disciples. Here, we read of how Jesus was rejected in His own town and the consequence of such rejection. Let us therefore open up our Heart lest we make the same Mistake.
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished: Jesus was such a tireless Speaker. He was constantly teaching. One would have taught after He finished Explaining those Parables to His Disciples, He should go home to rest. But not at all. Instead He went to His own town to teach again. He went into their Synagogue to teach again. He was never tired of teaching because He knew that People needed to hear this Truth that sets a Man free from Sin. He has gone through 30 years of Walking with the Father as a Man, so He was so rich in Practical ways of Walking With the Father as a Man. He was so eager to lead others to experience what He has Experienced. Jesus never preached a Sermon until He was 30 years(Luke 3:23), although He knew the Scriptures so well at 12years of age(Luke 2:42,46-47).He would have been a Scribe if He never waited until He has experienced the things He taught(Act 1:1). And this is why people were always astonished at His Teachings of Jesus because He was speaking that which He has experienced in His own Life. So Jesus was so eager to teach others so that they could become partakers also. This should be true in our lives also. There should be a Longing in our hearts to share with others the Truths that has changed our lives. If God has blessed Us, it is so that we can become a blessing to others(Genesis 12:2). Rivers of Living Waters is suppose to flow out of us for others to drink(John 7:38). Any River that does not flow becomes Smelly, but a Flowing River is always fresh. It is as we water other lives that God waters us back. Let me give you my own testimony, “Writing #Everyday with Jesus on a Daily basis Has Kept Me Fresh, Because God waters Me back. So it has become so interesting to Me that I am not bothered if others are not reading it. I have been blessed Tremendously by writing it than those reading it and not sharing what they have learnt with others” Don’t ever ask God to bless You if you don’t want to be a blessing to others!!! Don’t ever ask God to show You Truths and give you revelation on His Words, if You are not interested in sharing these Truths with others. Don’t be a River that is not Flowing. If you keep receiving Truths without Sharing with others, very soon, You will be smelly to those around You. Take heed, Lest the Truths You have begin to breed worms like the Manna that was stored up(Exodus 16:20).
Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?”So they were offended at Him: It is so sad, that those whom He has come to teach were offended with Him. He has sacrificed His time, His sleep just to come and teach them but instead of welcoming Him, they despised Him. They were too familiar with Him in Nazareth. He grew up in their midst. Indeed, Familiarity breeds contempt!!! They were Like, “is this not the Carpenter’s Son? How can a Carpenter’s Son be a Man of God?” They despised Him because of His Job and Family background!!! Carpenters were not always considered high up in the society. They were not scholars, they were not rich people. They see Jesus as a Poor Carpenter’s Son from a despised City of Nazareth. They despised Him because of His Family background, I perceived they were saying, “Is not His Mother Mary? Mary who could not afford a Room at His birth(Luke 2:7).Mary who could not afford a Lamb at Christ Dedication but instead She used a turtledoves(Luke 2:24).So how Could She be the Mother of a Great prophet? Is not His Younger Brothers and Sisters with Us(at least Six of them)? Are they not ordinary people? Then where did this one that called Himself Jesus get this wisdom and power to work Miracles? ” Are you like this? Do you despise a Preacher because of His poor background or lack of Education? Do you judge a Preacher based on His Family background or state of Origin? Do you look down on a Preacher because You know all His Younger brother and Sister as a Sinner? If You do, then You are not different from the the Citizens of Nazareth who took offense at Jesus because of His Job and family background. Instead of benefiting from His Words of Wisdom and Mighty works, You are there analysing His Job and Family members. Oh what a Foolish thing to do!!! Repent and don’t miss what God has for You like they did.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”: Behold the Humility of Christ!!! He was never offended that people despised His words of Wisdom and Miracles. He never took it to Heart. Instead, He gave a gentle reply to their questions. Let me paraphrase what Jesus said, He replied, ” I am not offended at You people because I know that those who are far away honour a Prophet than those who are members of His House and environment”. This has always been true for every Man of God. People who have seen a Prophet in His Environment or His Family as He grows as a Child don’t Honour Him as a Man of God. Those in His house or Street always think of Him as that Little Child they use to know. They have always seen Him as a Little Child Boy, they knew Him when He ran around playing with other kids with pants, then knew Him when He cried for food as a Little Child. So they were blinded by Familiarity that they could not see that God has raised Him up to be a Man of God. But others that were not members of His family and immediate environment, that knew nothing about His past and origin, they met Him only after He has become a Grown Man as a Prophet respect and Honour Him. So don’t be offended if those on Your street or those who live in the same house with You do not Honour you as a Man of God. Remember it happened to Jesus also. Don’t expect to get Respect from Your street members or family members. They may never see you as a Man of God no matter how many words of wisdom and works of Miracles they hear and see through You. But God will always raise others far away who value and cherish you as a Man of God. Indeed our God is able to raise up Children to Us from the Stones(Matt 3:9)
Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief: Oh what a Sad Verse!!! I think this is one of the saddest verse in the Bible. Although Jesus wanted to do Miracles for them, but He could not do it. They needed Miracles greatly, Jesus has a great desire to do it for them, but He couldn’t because of their unbelief. In His own town and Family when they should have gotten the Maximum blessings of Jesus, yet they got the least because they would not believe in Him. They despised Him. They were too familiar with Him to accept Him as a Prophet of God. Their Familiarity with Him bred contempt. They missed what God had for them. Jesus wanted to do Mighty works for them, but He could not because they would not belief in Him. Whenever we despise a True Servant of God, we become the Loser. If He is just a crook who is only interested in your Money, that is okay. You lose nothing. But if a Man is a genuine Man of God, anointed by the Holy Spirit and you look down on Him for one reason or the other. Maybe because of the nature of His job, education or family background. You are going to be the Loser.
Just picture this, that at the Judgement seat of Christ, the Lord says to You, “There are many things i wanted to do for You and through You. There are many nations i wanted to bless through You. There are many Victories I want accomplish through You. But I could not!!! I could not because those I sent across Your Path to prepare You, You despise them. Those that should have shared the Truths with You, You Looked down upon them!!!. What a Sad comment!!! I don’t want the Lord to ever say to Me when I stand before Him that, “There are Many Mighty Works I should have done for You and through Your but I could not because You did not trust Me. You trusted in Man!!! When You should have run after Me, You ran after Money and your Job. When You should have trusted in My promises, You became too familiar with My words” This is why the Lord always ask those whom He wants to do Miracles for, “Do You believe I can do this for You?(Matt 9:28)”.And His response will always be,” According to Your Faith, Let it be done to You(Matt 9:29). So if We don’t believe He can do Mighty Works for Us and through Us, then No mighty works will ever be recorded about us. May none of Us falls in the category of those whom the Lord could not do Many Mighty works for. (Amen)
Dear Friend, God is Looking for those who will be a Flowing Rivers For Him in these last days. God is Looking for those who are tireless in their service for the Kingdom of God. God is Looking for those who will not just keep the truths to themselves alone but share it with others. God is looking for Disciples and not just Scribes who are filled with head knowledge. Don’t be offended if those in your Street and family members cannot see that God has raised You up to be one of His Agent of Transformation. For He will raise up others far away to pay attention to Your Words of Wisdom and Mighty works. Don’t shrink back in unbelief, don’t cast away Your trust in the Lord Jesus because He will not be able to do anything for You if there is Unbelief in Your Heart. May none of Us be found with an Evil Heart of Unbelief in departing from the Living God(Hebrews 3:12).Amen!!! God bless You. Have a blessed day.
