Finding Rest Through the Yoke!!!
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”…….. Matthew 11:28-30
In our previous Study, we see Jesus speaking on the Characters of those whom the Lord reveals things to. Which is primarily Humility. We also saw that No one can know Jesus in a practical way except the Father Reveals Him to us. And no one can know the Father expect the Son Reveals Him. Here we see the invitation that Jesus gave to those who are weary and what will be the effects of responding to that invitation.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest: In the previous verse, Jesus said He could give revelation about the Father. And the test that we know the Father is that we turn to Him first when we are in need. We have to ask Jesus to reveal the Father to Us when we find that we are full of jealousy, competition and insecurity. So it is in this Context that Jesus says “Come to Me”. Let me paraphrase verse 27 and 28, “No one can know God intimately as Father unless I the Son reveals the Father to such a Person. And if you come as babes, I will give you that revelation. So Come to Me, those who are insecure, tossed about with so many insecurity, inferiority complex, weariness, defeated by Sins, jealousy and bitterness. Come to Me and I will reveal the Father to You and the Result of Your Coming to Me is getting Rest” If we come to Jesus, our lives will never be full of anxiety, tension and stress. There will be pressures in the world but in the midst of it, we can have rest and security in the Love of Our Heavenly Father who cares so much for us and knows the numbers of the hairs on our head. We have to acknowledge that there are lots of problems around us but in the midst of that, Jesus invites us to Come to Him so that we can enter into rest. Do you believe Jesus can do this for You? Jesus has promised to give us rest so we can claim it. We can say to the Lord, “You have promised that if I come to You, You will not only give me forgiveness of Sins but also rest”
Jesus says, “Come to Me” Don’t go to Man, Don’t go to any Preacher to lay His empty hand on your Head, you will get nothing. Instead, Go to Jesus to lay His nail pierced hands on You. I don’t mean that God does not use Laying of Hands from People. But if you want a Man to lay His Hands on You, Make Sure it is a really Godly Man who lays Hands on Your Head and they are very rare nowadays. So why not go directly to Christ instead? You don’t need a Second Mediator. For there is only one Mediator between God and Man and the Mediator is Christ Jesus(1 Timothy 2:5). A Lot of Christians Go to their Pastors and No Wonder they have many problems. Am not saying You should not seek counsel, but if you want rest, You must Come to Jesus. A Godly Man will never allow People to make Him the second Mediator. He will always lead them to depend on Christ. He will always make them see that they can go to Jesus directly. A Godly leader will always show His members how to go to Christ. Unconsciously, Many has made their Pastor the Mediator between Them and God. A lot of pentecostals despise the Roman Catholic because they say “You must go to Mary, then Mary Go to Jesus, then Jesus goes to God the Father” but they are doing the same thing themselves. They go to their Pastor or Prophet(Mostly false Prophets) and ask what God wants them to do in a particular situation. They have not come to know the Father personally because they did not go directly to Jesus. Jesus says “Come to Me”. Honestly, if I were to choose a Second Mediator, I would have chosen Mary. At least I know that Mary is a Godly Woman compare to some of these Prophets and Pastors. But You don’t even need Mary, when You can come to Christ Directly. And know this for sure, If you Come to Christ, no matter how terrible a Sinner you are, He will never cast you away(John 6:37). He will give you rest, He will take away all the bitterness that has weighed You down. He will take away the Load of Sins that is pressing You down. “Come to Me” the Lord says.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me: After We have Come to Jesus for Rest, He tells Us to do something. This rest does not come automatically. The two mistakes that Christian makes is:
(1) To believe that God will do everything and I have to do nothing.
(2) To believe that I have to do everything and it all depends on Me and not on God.
Both are completely Wrong. The Christian Life is a Partnership with Jesus. What Jesus did on the Cross was a Finished Work, but we would not get the benefits of that work till we play our part. For Example, Jesus already died for the Sins of the Whole world(1 John 2:2)but we will not get the benefit unless We, Repent, Believe and Confess our sins to Jesus Christ(1 John 1:9). Another Example, “it would be done to us according to our Faith”. If God wants to do something for Us and through us but we don’t believe it is possible, then it will never happen because we failed to play our parts.
So to get this Rest that was promised, Jesus says” Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me” A yoke is a bar or a frame by which two animals of the same nature(Oxen in particular) are Joined at the heads or necks for working together. Animals of the same nature are always yoked together on a Farm to plow the ground and make a straight fallow. And most time, A Senior Ox is yoked with a Junior Ox so that the Experienced Ox can teach the Junior one how to do the Farm Job. It is as if the Senior Ox is saying to the Younger Ox , “Learn from Me, I know You don’t know how to plow a straight Fallow on the ground. But if you take my yoke upon You, I have enough experience in this field. I have been doing this for Years. Just make sure You don’t rush ahead of Me or lag behind when I move forward. Walk at the same pace with Me. Let’s do it Step by Step. Don’t go into other direction. Stick to the Direction I am going. And if You pay attention to my instructions, You won’t be doing Zigzag fallow through the field. It would be absolutely Straight!!!” This is the picture the Lord is trying to use here saying, “If you take my yoke upon You and learn from Me, You can walk straight upright without any crookedness in Your Life, for I am in Partnership with You”
It must be noted that the two animals to be yoked together must be of the same Nature. The Lord even warned in Deuteronomy 22:10 “You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together”. This is why Jesus had to Come to Earth as a Man. He was made in All things Like Us(Hebrews 2:14, 17-18), He was tempted at All Points exactly as we are(Hebrews 4:15). He emptied Himself of all the privileges He had as God when He walked on Earth(Philippians 2:5-8). If He was not of our Nature, then We cannot be Yoked together with Him to teach Us. It would be wickedness for Him to say “Come to Me and Follow Me” If He used a Special power that is not made available to Us also. The Humanity of Christ is a Very Very important Truth We must believe if We will ever Walk as Jesus walked(1 John 2:6). We will never see any beauty about the Life of Jesus if we don’t believe we can walk as He Walked. This is the Missing Message in Today’s Christianity!!!
Taking the Yoke of Christ upon Us is a Picture of Fellowship with Jesus. It is as we Fellowship with Him that the Characteristics of our Hearts changes. For Example, if you want to watch a movie and you are absolutely sure that Christ would not be willing to sit and watch such movie with You. Your carnal self may enjoy it but You will lose your rest. Anything you do that cannot be done in Fellowship with Christ will bring Unrest. Can you watch Dirty movies in Fellowship with Christ? Can you masturbate in Fellowship with Christ? Keep your Fellowship with Christ unbroken and You will find rest in your Soul always.
For I am gentle and lowly in heart: There are two primary things Jesus says we should learn from Him namely, “Humility and Gentleness”. He never told us to learn how to preach, Sing or learn Instruments. There is nothing wrong in learning all these, but it is Far better to learn Humility and gentleness than to learn to preach, sing or play instrument. There is a wise saying which states, “The Good is the enemy of the Best” You can concentrate on good things and miss the Best things. Many things will fall into place when you learn “Humility and Gentleness” from Jesus. Look at the way He Humbled Himself and denied His own will in order to do the Father’s will(John 6:38). Look at the way He was Gentle towards those that opposed Him and Crucified Him, yet He forgave Them. Learn from Him, “Humility and Gentleness” Singing, playing Instruments and preaching will only give You ministry and Honour before Men. Don’t miss the Best for the Good.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”: If you claimed to be yoked with Jesus and you find it hard and heavy, then am sorry to inform You, it must have been a Wrong yoke. Maybe your own yoke to fulfill your own Lust or a Legalistic attitude to God’s commands like the old testament people. Then of course it would be weary and heavy upon You. But when You come into the Spirit of the New Covenant, we find obedience as a Joy. If obedience to God’s Commandments is not a thing of Joy for You , then You have not entered the New Covenant. The Law commands us to Run but gave us no leg, Jesus commands Us to Fly but gave us Wings. Which is better? To Run without Legs or to Fly with Wings? We must demonstrate with our lives that the Commandments of God are not burdensome(1 John 5:3).
Dear Friend, Come to Jesus, He is waiting for You. Come Just as You are, He will never cast you away. No matter what You have done. He will never cast you out. Play Your Part, Confess Your Sins to Him alone. Repent of it and Believe in Him. Take His Yoke and Learn from Him how to walk in Victory over Sins. Learn Humility and Gentleness from Him, for this is the greatest virtues of the Christian Life. Prove to Your Generation that the Commandments of the Lord are not burdensome but a thing of Joy. As we Humble ourselves before Him, May He give Us Grace to Walk as He Walked.(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
