The Disciples and The storm!!!
Now when He got into a boat, His Disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His Disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying “Lord, Save Us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful, o you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm. So the men marveled saying “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”….. Matthew 8:23-27
In our previous Study, We saw two men who had the opportunity of following the Lord but we are not sure of the decision they made, when Jesus stated the Conditions of Discipleship to them. But in these verses, we see the difficulties faced by those who are actually following the Lord wherever He goes. Let us therefore open our Hearts to see some of the Difficulties along the Narrow Way of Discipleship.
When He got into the boat: Behold the Humility of Christ!!! That when the Son of God walked on Earth as a Man, He traveled using a fishing boat. He had no Yacht or luxurious Ship but simply used The Fishing boat of His Disciples. Indeed, Godliness with contentment is great Gain( 1 Timothy 6:6). Let us learn from our Master to be content with whatever we have.
His Disciples Followed Him: A True Disciple is the one who walks in the Footsteps of Jesus. A True Disciple is the one who walks looking unto Jesus. A True Disciple is the one who sets the Lord always before Himself as an Example. It was said that “they Followed Him” not that “He Followed them” we are to go to the place the Lord is going not go to the place of our choice and ask the Lord to follow us. Even if others will not follow the Lord because they may end up not having a place to lay their heads, It must be said about Us that “We Followed Him”. Even if others will excuse themselves saying “Let me first go and bury My Father”, Yet it must be written about Us that “We Followed Him”. A True Disciple must we willing to go through the sea and face the Difficulties and danger along with Christ. There are Multitude who will be willing to go the Land way with Christ but unwilling to go the Sea way with Him. Let us therefore ask for Grace to follow the Lord wherever He goes.
And Suddenly, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves: Who would have thought that those who Followed the Lord would be Troubled by the Storm? This is a picture of the storm that comes into our Lives as Disciples of the Lord. In following Jesus, There is no guarantee that there will be no storm of Life. There will certainly be storm. In fact, a greater storm!!! Because the Devil will be more furious with the Disciples of Jesus than those who are not Disciples. The Multitude never faced this Storm. Only those who followed the Lord wherever He goes face such storm. Let us therefore not be Discouraged and weary when we look around us and it seems those who do not follow the Lord are Living an easy calm Life.

Why does God at times permit storm in the Lives of His Disciples? The reason is to test us and show us the littleness of our faith and to challenge us so that we can come to faith. When the storm came, the Disciples immediately discovered that their faith was very little. We don’t discover how little our faith is until a storm comes. As Long as everything is calm, we can imagine ourselves to be a great man or woman of faith but wait till a little storm comes in your home or in your office or in your life. It could be sickness or financial difficulties. And suddenly we will discover that all the wonderful things we spoke about was just head knowledge and not Living faith in our heart. Let us therefore rejoice when we fall into various trials knowing that it is the testing of our faith(James 1:2-3). All our trials is to test the genuineness of our faith(1 Peter 1:6-7).
But Jesus was asleep: We often read that Jesus was praying, Preaching or teaching. But here we read that He was sleeping. This is to show us that He was really a Man Like everyone of Us. He was tired after the Revival at Peter’s house that He needed to Sleep. God never sleeps nor slumbers (Psalm 121:4). But Jesus had emptied Himself of all the prerogatives He has as God when He walked up the Earth as a Man( Philippians 2:5-8). Jesus sleeping in the midst of the Storm is a picture of rest. The mark of a spiritual man is that He is at rest whatever storm may come. He is at rest because His confidence is in God and not in Himself. I remember when Peter was taken by Herod and was to be killed the next day, it was written that Peter was sleeping the night before that day(Acts 12:6). Those who have kept their conscience clear from every guilt of Sin and those who have learnt to put their trust and confidence in God can sleep in the midst of the storm. We are to press on to perfection till we get to the point where we are at rest when the storm is against us because we know that God cares for us. We can say in the middle of the storm “If God be for us, who can be against Us?”
Then His Disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying “Lord, Save Us! We are perishing!”: Although most of this Disciples were Fishermen and used to the sea, yet they were filled with fear when they came in contact with the storm. Glory to God they had Jesus with them in the boat. Who else should they have gone to? Those who are related to the Lord can always cast All their fears and burden upon the Lord for He cares(1 Peter 5:7).Those who are Following the Lord in their lives can always run to the Lord when they sense fear in their hearts. So they came to the Lord in prayer saying ” Lord, Save Us! For we are perishing!”. Many would never learn to Pray unless they are faced with the storm. When we come to the Lord in prayer, we must believe that only Him Can save us. For the Main purpose why He came to Earth was to save us from Sin(Matt 1:21) but only those who call upon his name will be saved(Acts 2:21). They called him “Lord”. Only those who are willing to accept Jesus Christ as the Lord of their Life will be saved. If the Lord does not save us, then We are doom. If the Lord does not arise to our case, we will surely perish!!! Let us therefore approach Jesus in all Humility and assurance in prayer. For He who comes to Him, He will never cast away(John 6:37).
But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O You of Little faith” : Christ did not rebuke them for disturbing His sleep for He was not a Slave to Sleep like many of us who get angry when our sleep is disturbed. Instead He rebuke them for their Fear. It is a shameful thing for those who say they are Christ Disciples who live and walk in fear of Death. For Christ has delivered us from the Fear of Death( Hebrews 2:14-15). We should never be afraid of death through accident when we are in the bus, train, boat or plane.  All fears comes because of Lack of faith and confidence in God. All fears comes because we don’t believe what God has said to Us in His words. Let us therefore have faith that Nothing can take our Lives until we have finished the will of God on this Earth. For Jesus has the keys of Death(Revelation 1:18).He is the one that decides when to open or close the Door!!! Glory to God.
He Rebuked the the wind and the sea and there was a Great Calm: Those who have presented their case before Jesus can be sure that He will attend to it. Though He rebukes us for our little faith, yet we can be sure that He will not Forsake Us. He will rebuke the storms in our lives when it has accomplished it desired End. He Rebuked the storm when it has shown the Disciples the weakness and littleness of their faith. And there was a Great calm!!! Oh what a perfect relief to have Jesus with You. All Your Fears, All Your storms, All your anxiety, All that takes away Your Joy can be Rebuked just by a Single word from the mouth of the Lord. This is the place the Lord wants to bring us to. A place where we become perfectly calm in our hearts even when we are in the midst of storms.
And they Marveled saying, “Who can this be, that even winds and the sea obey Him?” : There were so surprised, they have never seen the sea so calm like this before. They marveled “What Manner of Man is this!!!”. Everything we see about Jesus is worthy of admiration. There is none so Powerful, Humble, Holy, Caring, Loving, Bearing, Faithful, Compassionate Like He is. Indeed, “What manner of Man is this” Sickness and Diseases obey Him, Even the Wind and the Sea obey Him!!! Everything obeyed Him because He obeyed the Father in Everything. Adam Lost the Dominion given to Him by God because of disobedience(Genesis 1:26), but Jesus showed that Dominion through obedience to the Father in Everything. There is no partiality with God, what He did for and Through Jesus, He will do for us and through us if we walk as Jesus walked (1 John 2:6).
Dear Friend, There is no guarantee that in following the Lord, there will be no storms. Are You still willing to Follow? Don’t Judge a Disciple of the Lord going through storms of Life because He or she may be more Whole-hearted then You are? If you won’t follow the Lord, at least don’t Judge those who are facing the storms on the Difficult way. Those who have faced the storm gain a better knowledge of God and His powers. Those who have gone through the storms know Christ better than those who only walked with Him on the Land when it is safe. But God is Faithful, He will never allow us to face the storm that is too much for us to bear. Let us therefore cast All our fears upon Him for He cares for us. May the Lord give us Grace to Follow the Lord and be in perfect Peace in the midst of the storm(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
#Everyday with Jesus.
