Seeking Honour in Our good works!!!
Take heed, that you do not do your charitable deeds before men to be seen by them, otherwise, you have no reward from Your Father in Heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a Trumpet before You….. But when You do your Charitable deeds, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deeds may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly…. Matthew 6:1-4
In these verses, Jesus continues on the theme that Our Righteousness must exceed that of the Scribes and the Pharisees. Here, He began to talk about doing that which is right but with the wrong motive. All our religious activities become corrupt if they are done with the wrong motive. All our good works and religious activities must be done for the Glory of God.
In the old testament, there was not much emphasis on Motive because the Old testament dealt only with Man’s external Life. The Law could only punish a Man on that part of His Life that was external and visible by others. But in the New Covenant, our Righteousness must flow from within. It must surpass that of the Scribes and the Pharisees.
Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men to be seen by them: This is a Sin that easily traps us. So Jesus warns us to watch out for it!!! Be very careful. If we are honest with ourselves, we will discover that there is a Great lust and desire in our flesh to get Honour from men for being Spiritual and good. There is a pleasure we get to let people know that we have done this and that for the good of others. This is the first Sin that was judged in the Early Church. When Ananias and Sapphira pretended that they were giving All the proceeds from the sales of their Land to God to get Honour that they were whole Hearted before men(Acts 5:1-10). We must be very careful when we give to ensure that the Motive is not Corrupt. We must constantly judge ourselves in this area because getting Honour is something that is deeply rooted within us. We must always ask ourselves each time we want to give or do a good deed “Why am I doing these? Is it so that people will clap and think I am spiritual?” we must try to the best of our ability to Hide whatever good deeds we have done before Men. We must feel uncomfortable when people accidentally discover that we are the one who did something good secretly. How do you feel when people give Honour to someone else for something You have done secretly thinking it was done by the other person? If you feel sad, then You still need to judge Yourself until you are totally free from the Honour of Men.
There is a reward for all our charitable deeds and good works. But there are two categories of people, those who want their reward immediately from men and those who wait upon God to reward them. Those who seeks to receive Honour from Men already received their reward which is the Honour they desired. Those who seeks to impress men and draw attention to themselves are like those sounding a trumpet to draw attention towards themselves. Indeed, they already got the reward they desired!!! 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 speaks about two types of Believers: Those who build with Gold, Silver and precious stones and others who built with wood, hay and straws. What they built was tested with Fire and those that build with wood, hay and straws suffered a great loss and had no reward. Those who spent all their lives during good deeds only to impress men will discover that All they did were wood, hay and straws and had no reward in eternity. This is why we must take heed lest we lose our Rewards in eternity.
Don’t let your Left hand know what your right hand is doing : what does Jesus mean by Right hand not know what the left hand is doing in relation to doing charitable deeds? I believe He has referring to the Church which is the Body of Christ which is the individual members in the Church. The Right hand and the left hand are so close and do virtually all things together in cooperation but when it comes to doing charitable deeds, we must as long as it depends on us hide it from others. It is a total Disobedient to this verse when church tries to find out how much and when members gives money out for a church project. The Church must be arranged in a pattern that The right hand does not know what the Left hand is giving. All these records that keeps individual name with the amount contributed makes it difficult to practice this commandments. We are not to judge others in this matter. The word of God has not been given to us to judge others but rather to judge ourselves. If others are doing it wrongly, ours is to do it correctly. Moreover, All our motives will become clear when the Lord returns (1 Corinthians 4:5). So Judge Yourself and the motives behind Your charitable deeds. Is it to impress Men of how generous and spiritual you are or to glorify the name of the Lord?
Dear Friend, doing religious activities with the aim of getting praise from people is like cooking a pot of fried rice and after it is ready for eating, You dropped a Dead Lizard on it!!! All our singing, Preaching, fasting, praying, giving becomes corrupt once we start seeking for Honour and praise. We must Take heed and constantly judge ourselves in this area because seeking Honour is deeply rooted in our flesh. How would you feel if all you did for the Lord since you were born again is burnt up on the Judgement day? How would you feel when you are told that All the rewards you should have gotten in Heaven has already been given to you by Men on Earth because that was what you sought-after? Take heed my Friend!!! Judge Yourself before and after you do any good deed. Always remember that Only what is done for the Glory of God will Last forever!!! May God’s Grace keep our motives Pure always in Jesus name(Amen). God bless you. Have a blessed day.
